  • I waited over 18 months to purchase this FGO Katsushika Hokusai figure from Fate Grand Order for a discount because I was unwilling to pay the full sticker price of 32,000yen for a Phat Company anime figure, despite her being supposedly under the higher end, higher quality Luxury Gift product line. Now, almost 2 years after release. it felt my I have made the best decision. Today's figure unboxing and figure review will explain why.

So interesting I had no issues with the assembly of the brush at all. Putting these effect pieces in the brush was hell though. But for me her ribbon in the back was broken in the middle. But I could glue it and put it back in place.
Still love this figure so much anyway. She is so beautiful 😍

The fact that you had a different set of problems and everyone who commented face a different issue shows how poor the QC is over at Phat Company. If QC is consistent every copy of the figure will have the same good and bad parts. Even the parts with flaws would be exactly the same.

Great review, and appreciate the retrospect in pricing. QC was the main reason I stayed away from Phat Company's luxury Hokusai. When I got around to buying a new GSC Hokusai last year at 21k yen including shipping, this Phat Company Hokusai at B grade would have cost me about 24k yen after shipping. Yeah the GSC Hokusai is less ambitious, but QC is much better and the price I got her at was cheap.

I think this figure is amazing, such a nice figure. I bought the Semiramis from this luxury line, it was my most anticipated figure last year, I haven’t opened her yet. But the price dropped a lot, I payed ¥32k for it and you can get it now in A grade for ¥18k.
I actually payed more for the Funny Knights Semiramis in an A grade.

I actually love the look of the water effect, it was the first thing that made me like it. Maybe it looks different in person, but in pictures & video I like the look of it.

Besides one bird piece that I had trouble of putting on, mine turned out without any other QC. I was able to snag her at JP retail with free shipping, so technically I got her for less.
She's a beauty to look at!

8:49 Yes I totally agree, I’m exactly the same, I absolutely love colourful figures. Have you seen that new My Hero Academia Nejire Hado figure by Spiritale? Oh my God I love that figure, I don’t collect MHA figures but I’m so tempted to get that.

Once i see the peg gap, that issue will always be my focus whenever i look at the figure 🙃🙃

That's why the thought of sanding came to mind. It is still the better approach but I'm just afraid i might overdo it.

Phat Company is known to be inconsistent for their quality control. I purchased their Shiro Rerelease last year and her outfit was more dark blue than pastel blue from the original release. I did order their Sei Shonogan because Alter, Ques Q, or Amakuni haven’t released prototype pics of theirs yet.

There's really nice shading on her shoulders and then it sorta just abruptly stops when it gets to her face. I feel like it could do with a bit of blush on her face. What's funny is that my copy has the water bending up on the opposite side of what's shown in the video. Also it looks like your clear plastic rod actually holds up the water piece as intended. On mine, it's like 2 cm too short somehow. Tbh I don't really like the base. I think it should be a brown or an off yellow like her in game noble phantasm background. I'm a super big Hokusai fan, and have almost every single figure of her with the exception of the saber one and this one is my second favorite. The first is uh...the nendroid. The real issue is that there's basically 3 choices for Hokusai's Foreigner game appearance. The nendroid (wildly expensive for some reason), the Phat one (gambling), and the Furyu noodle stopper. That last one is a steal at like $30, honestly. It gets the job done.

Had this as well and can echo your assembling situations. I didn't experience issues with the brush but the footing and the small little wings/effect part were for lack of words, a pain in the ass. The given ones drop rather easily and as I was shifting the figure, 1-2 other wings dropped - probably due to the glue weakened. But all in all not difficult to fix.
My biggest gripe (after being pointed out by Zucco) has to be the fingers and how they sculpt them. They look like softened hotdogs to me 😂 but one may not notice as much at one glance.
As someone who had the GSC one too, I still think this is a great figure. It's different, has a presence and even though I PO it and paid in full, I don't regret it, although a discounted rate would have been great and you have certainly made the right financial decision.

I would much prefer to sand that part than paint it, you can easily wrap the rest of it so you don’t damage it while sanding. Maybe it’s just I’m terrified to paint anything haha.

These days, I always choose to wait till there is a deal unless it is limited and exclusive. Even then, I sometimes wait. It feels like almost all the figures hit the bargain bin these days, and the pre-ordering starting prices are just too much in most cases anyway. There are sometimes when it gets sold out and I miss out, but I see it as a method to control the collection rate 😋

Azure lane Ägir arrived today she has no flaws but who ever decided to make the base a 38.5cm circle and not an Oval needs to think about how big most display cases are. I had a spare base from an older figure and transfered her to that one after drilling 4 holes for pegs near the front and for the cape. I'll do the flag in a few days

I bought this figure when it was released because I love Oui, she is my servant 120, NP5, 2000/2000 and all the other stuff xDD, but I must say that it was expensive for me, approximately 550 dollars, at the time I was new to collecting figures like this so I used an intermediary and they took advantage, to this day I know it was a robbery but I don't regret it because she is truly one of my favorite figures. And just like you, I had a nightmare trying to adjust her to the base xDDD

It would be fun if you could do a review of limited run's Shantae figure, they are a videogame publisher and this is their first figure, for what I remember there is no branding on the box so i don't know who actually made the figure. It would be a good crossover for people who mainly collect videogames to have a professional reviewer like you to have a look at it. My impressions are that the sculpting is pretty good and even uses some transparent plastics in a cool way but the painting is rather bad, no shading at all, it also has a fun gimmick with leds. I think you would attract a lot pf viewers who aren't into figure collecting and you could give great criticism!

Thanks for sharing. This was an easy pass, the design was just OK but when I heard it was Phat...I had the Hokusai swimwear version by GSC, that was an awesome figure but I couldn't get past the face...also being so busy it started clashing with my other figures so ended up shifting it...IMHO, you could consider pre-ordering in order to do your review before selling on as used (if you decide not to keep). That way you can create reviews of newer figures and generate more interest in your video. Just from myself as your subscriber, it would be great to see figures on your channel that are still somewhat in the in the spotlight. I have no idea which method would end up costing you more, but just a thought.
Of course it's your channel so you can do it your way.! :)

Actually my strategy varies depending on what i want to review in order to optimise the cost. With Genshin stuff I was almost always one of the earliest English speaking channels to review it, and after I'm done i sold them (their popularity made it easy to sell). That is also why you see me occasionally getting my hands on new or upcoming Chinese brand figures that the rest of world don't have access to yet.
With FGO this strategy is risky because of the unpredictability on which character will blow up in popularity or which will tank. If i predicted the views won't be as good then I'll buy it at a lower price and review it later, since reviewing it early or late made no difference. I also resort to this strategy for figures that i intend to keep (i collect fgo stuff), this Hokusai included, regardless of whether the figure is good or bad.
If the character isn't popular it doesn't matter how early you review it. Views will tank. But it doesn't deter me from making videos that i want to make, including the occasional figure photography content i publish once every few months even when i knew the majority of figure collectors don't dabble in photography.

@@EXkurogane yea, that makes sense on all fronts as you say. It is seriously impossible to tell which figures will hold value. Looking at my current small collection, I would say simpler design figures and perhaps ones from classic long running anime like Evangelion hold their value well, it's all part of the fun I guess. As much as I like FGO characters too, I don't think they hold value well.
I try to choose figures now based on what I 'really' like rather than the hype - for example I have on pre-order Girls Frontline AK-Alfa, absolutely love the design, and confident to order as I've watched your videos you rate Ques Q very highly (I don't have experience with them yet), but that figure I think does not have much interest....keep up the good work!
