I Nearly Made a Costly Mistake With This FGO Astolfo Figure

- My reservations with purchasing this Kotobukiya 1/7 Saber Astolfo Figure from FGO Fate Grand Order was almost a bad decision, partly thanks to my hesitation of paying 27,000yen for a Kotobukiya anime figure. My reservations were pretty justified given what I saw in this figure in terms of the paint work. With today's figure unboxing and figure review, let me explain why.

I actually really like Kotobukiya, they do a great job on likeness, they usually always put a nice base on it, they don’t just put a round plastic base on it, and they usually always do good poses, these things are more important to me than lots of shading that I can only notice by examining it up closely.
And then the cost is usually lower than all the other manufacturers. I’m going to have to pay ¥32k for their Evileye, can’t find it any cheaper.
If you compare them to Alter, Stronger or Amakuni, there's a massive difference. Personally, I just avoid Kotobukiya unless I can get a really good deal like 10k-15k yen. Astolfo for 30k yen absurd coming from Kotobukiya 😂
I had the exact same feeling of cheap plastic with Koto's Thrice Asuka (ripped plugsuit, sitting on the sand) especially with the plugsuit: it looks like a cheap mass-dyed plastic, no shading, I expected way better for the price. She is just interesting for her face expression. And also glued to the base btw.
That amakuni figure is criminally undersized. According to amakuni's website he's 21cm to the top of the head. If 161cm is his canonic height then he should be 23.5cm. That's the difference between being 5'5" and being 4'10" (or 6'0" vs 5'4" (11% difference))
It also looks like part of the price did go towards a more careful paintjob than what they usually do. Usually I would expect gold trim like that to be constantly going outside of the lines when it's Kotobukiya. I did notice that the armband on his right arm is painted more how I expect from them. 8:27
If I had known about this figure during preorder I might have ordered him. But only with the bonus faceplate. I just feel like a closed mouth smile isn't right when the pose is such a big show off sword flourish. Even just a smile showing his teeth might have felt fitting enough for me.
This figure is ¥33k for an A grade on AmiAmi, I should have bought it on release. I too don’t really buy male characters either, the only male characters I have coming this year is Vaush & Nicholas by Kotobukiya. That Vaush seems to have good shading on it.

I was able to get the Kotobukiya Exclusive Davinci Rider for retail price and the details on her are amazing! I was on the fence about the astolfo saber because I prefer his 3rd ascension 😂
I'd try using a very small piece of White Tac on the back plastic peg, it might give it enough grip or you can make the peg larger. I'd probably be okay with it not going in the peg as long as it put in a display and rarely moved the figure.

I agree with your take on the matt vs glossy topic! In general 99% of glossy figures look like 💩. The only cases where glossy makes sense is when the character is wet or sweats. But in such a case there needs to be extra textures added like water/sweat drops on the skin and also great shading to make it look great/realistic and not like cheap plastic👈. Funnily enought i have one example of such a case on PO (Shizuka from Zom 100, MFC: 1942188) where it looks fantastic in my opinion (hopefully also in the end product and not only the prototype lmao😂)!

Yes. Fate Apocrypha even made sure to include the trap joke, though i can't remember which episode. Astolfo just walked around naked in towel around his master, Jeanne D'Arc tried to stop him from going naked in front of another man, only to find out he has a pp. Astolfo is basically a femboy that cross dresses.
