Grab a brand new sink plunger, drill 3-4 holes in it with a 1/4” drill bit and use that to agitate your clothes after letting them soak. I do about 10 minutes and then only use the scrub board for especially dirty spots that need special attention. Saves some time but you still get your physical work in.

Most people would think you are crazy doing laundry this way, but I feel know how and being able to wash this way slows the pace of life down and like you said keeps you moving and fit. We did set up a power washer and dryer that we pick up used for 150.00. We have them in the garage we are building. We have no water plumbed there so we have to drag the hose over to the washer hookup after we water the garden. The only hot water we have is the 2nd load from the sun heating the water in the hose. We did it this way because my wife would not do it by hand like your family is doing it. I say you go girl because that is work. The way we do it does free up the time to build the house. It is a plus understanding hand washing and have it the equipment to do it if you loose power and or want to live off grid. - Jeff

It would be a challenge but do-able and great experience for everyone. I still hand wash some items...just did some sheer curtains yesterday and have a few more from bedroom to do yet. I do put them in the dryer on a cooler setting and less time and then I don't have to iron anything. Not fond of ironing.

I am 68 Earth Years, and do remember laundry as a boy. My father was a sheet metal worker and and hung large gauge wire in the basement to dry clothes. But before I can remember such they dried clothes on lines out doors. Some where there are photos of my mothers undergarments that were outside in the winter, her bras, and undies were frozen above the line, straight up in the air. Fun stuff.
I put a bit of liquid laundry soap on spots before I put them into the wash basket. Many loads don't have anything that needs that though. I use Dropps pods for washing; not sure if they are biodegradeable. For many years I made a basic laundry soap but soap with our very hard water wasn't a good match, especially for my husband's work clothes. I've been hanging clothes for 40+ years, outside in the summer and inside in the winter (rural NY). I always used to feel happy hanging rows of white old fashioned cloth diapers :) We have a woodstove so winter drying isn't a lot longer than summer drying. I've used all sorts of clothes line on my vintage posts. Most recently we strung them with paracord and so far (couple of years now) it is my favorite. So, when/if your clothes line fails you could try that. We have an old (house is 160+ years, shallow dug well probably the same) well so I don't worry too much about water usage beyond normal thriftyness. I remember when we lived in Kayenta AZ for a couple of years. I would hang out laundry and it would dry before I got the next load ready to hang. So neat. Also, good wood clothespins are worth their weight in gold :)

Way to go👍👍 i only let my laundry get to 1, 5 gallon bucket full. Thunderstorms and dirt storms make it a gamble, for drying. Summer laundry rocks. I have a covered laundry line, and a indoor storage in case i have to take down , and put indoors on windstorms. Great equipment investment. Grew up using a wringer washer. Mom got her hands caught more than once in the wringer. I have a washer and dryer but have started hanging my clothes on hot sunny days.
When Dad was stationed in south Pacific (WWII) men would build a windmill with a plunger, put a tub of water under it, and their clothes, and flipped the handle. Wind kept the agitator moving till they wanted to rinse. Water was drained out, fresh went in, and the mill used. Two rinses, he said, were usually enough.
Here are some tips for hanging wash: pin your waist bands, single band, at the seams. The waistbands should dry faster. Turn shirts upside down and inside out (to keep them from getting sun bleached) and pin the hems on either side. That should cut down on ironing. Socks should be hung by the tops, not bottoms. Underwear by the waists. Bras should be hung in the shade. Towels at one end slightly over the line and pinned on both sides. Dresses can be dried on the hanger from the shoulders. Hanging tops on plastic hangers can also be done. Pillows can be hung by the corners and should be air freshened a couple times a year, btw. Sneakers can be hung by the tongues. Sheets and pillow cases by the corners. Sheets folded in half. Diapers, and I hope you'll consider using cloth, should always be hung on the line to whiten and help sterilize. (and later you'll have fantastic rags to clean with!) I've been hanging wash outside for over 50 years and these things I've learned might be of help to you.
Great advice. I live in az and i used to hang dry everything. On the hanger wet and then they are sun and wind dried w no need to iron. I had a thing that folds inhalf for easy storage but it hangs up and has a ton of clothes pins hanging on it. I used that for drying underthings and clothe diapers and menstrual pads.

My mom did laundry by hand when I was little, for a family of 8. If there was too much we'd occasionally go to a laundromat. She hung clothes outside in the winter and let them freeze dry. I never quite understood that but they say it works. I'm 68 now and have done handwashing at different periods of time throughout my adult life. My washer broke down awhile back and I decided I've had enough of washing machines. Don't like dryers either. I use several deep dish pans in the tub, wash in one, rinse in the other two. I desperately want a wringer but they're so expensive to buy new and I can't find a used one, yet. So I wring out by hand. I hang the clothes on a clothes rack with large plastic tote lids underneath to catch the drips. Boot trays work for that also. I use a natural soap and white vinegar in the rinse. My clothes come out very nicely, with no lint balls like they did from the washing machine. You're right, it's great exercise, uses no electricity and less water. I live very frugally on a very tight retirement budget. I love the challenge of making do with very little, and I could adapt and survive in any situation. We're not strange at all. I really feel sorry for the people who are dependant on every modern technology. Being self sufficient is amazing. Take care. 😊

The tangles come right out. No lingering vinegar smell after clothes, or hair, are dry. And I keep spray bottles with about 1/3 to 1/2 white vinegar to water in the kitchen and bathroom to clean with. Amazing for getting hard water stains off faucets. The only things I clean with are vinegar, baking soda and Bar Keeper's Friend. No nasty chemicals, dyes or artificial fragrances. 😊👍
We have found that life has different seasons. Don't feel pressure to do something just because at one time you said you would be doing it that way forever. It is good to try all things and see what you enjoy and what you don't enjoy. Trading labor & time for saving money is how you are going to make it on a homestead. Your philosophy about people needing to move and work is what I believe. It is what God commanded or condemned our first parents to. Just remember the only docyrine that doesn't change is the doctrine of Jesus Christ.

Instead of a wash board. You can buy a plunger washer and you can get one at most tack stores. Or you can find one at a flea market

I recall one being behind my grandparents house but not sure if i ever witnessed it in use.

You can use a plunger to agitate the water. Felsnapa soap was used to wash clothes on a wash board.

When we're in Mexico I hang clothes out on a clothesline all the time! I love how nice they smell. I'm proud of you!

If your laundry gets rained on its just an extra rinse. Your laundry will be softer and will smell wonder.
