    Hobie is the industry leader in design and with that come high pricing. There are several peddle boats coming to market at half the cost - but they don’t offer a reversible drive. Check Pelican, Lighting Strike, both are available now and the Vibe has one releasing in February (Vibes the one i’m excited about). All are based on Hobie’s original drive system

    • @LarryTalbot_1313
      @LarryTalbot_1313 5 лет назад +1

      That's because the market is massive right now and there's a boom on. For us guys that have been around forever and will continue to be long after the "boom" is gone, we'll see the prices drop down. But by then these prices will be considered cheap, because everything will have doubled by then. That's usually how it works.

    i know this video is pretty old, but I just wanted to thank you for the high up overhead shots you took. I have watched, no joke, close to 60 " review" videos all showing the same thing but none that show the handle and the alignment arrow moving at the same time like you captured here. I have been trying to find out if my 360 handle is loose or its supposed to have some play in it. I can finally see someone turn the handle and the arrow move together and see that the "overcorrection" needed for the handle is normal. THANKS

    • @youtubecomments5951
      @youtubecomments5951 5 лет назад +1

      Adam Austin when you have money why would you need sense. People that have money has a difference sense. No one needs multiple supercars but people that can’t afford it won’t buy it cause it don’t make sense for them. If you make 10 million a year and worth 50 million then it wouldn’t make sense to just hold all that money and not buy crazy extravagant things. If you think about it. Does it make sense for so many to buy the iPhone X at 1000. For some people it makes sense but for majority it doesn’t. Basically I’m saying since you think it doesn’t make sense. Then that just means you can’t afford it. If I can realistically afford it and want it then I’ll buy it. If I can’t then I’ll buy something I can. Good day.

For me the drive is incredible but I own a PA14 and honestly probably won't buy another one since I do some many different types of kayak fishing (freshwater, inshore & offshore) and the PA14 is so heavy. If or I should say when they come out with a 360 drive for the Outback if the price comes in about a thousand more than the current price I'd stand in line to buy one.

    As an owner of 2 2015 pa14s, I still love my rig but wifey never used hers so we sold it and now she rides in a low profile bass pro seat in back of mine lol... so if you're looking at Pro Angler keep in mind you can fit 2 in the 14. Although the new 360 is cool, if I was single I'd get a sol skiff setup which is probably the same price w motor and trailer with the benefit of adding range to my trips. Getting ready to buy an ankona shadowcast 16 next, rigged with a trailer and motor will cost the same as what I paid for my two pa14s :(

    That is really cool. I never knew how efficient those pedal paddle kayaks are at moving you quickly. They always looked like a gimmick to me. lol... Being old, fat, and lazy I would still rather have a sail or a trolling motor, but this seems to do the job and it keeps it human powered meaning no registration and very stable looking with mostly 2 free hands for fishing. Outstanding!

      @@KayakDIY I just have a tiny home made sail that came with my kayak from the previous owner. Just two sticks with a triangle of Dacron between them and some bungee cords. It's only good for going downwind. The problem with wind and motors is that in my state you have to register any boat as soon as you put a motor or sail on it.
      Anything human powered is exempt, so canoes, row boats, peddle boats, and kayaks don't need any registration. You may want to check local regulations to see if it is the same in your state. This pedal power gets around that nicely. :) Too bad that I haven't seen a kit to add it to regular older kayaks.

    The big thing everyone complained about was about not being able to easily go into reverse. A couple of people mentioned “hands free” reverse but I think people are just looking for issues. The investment in engineering forces the price. Of course Hobie is in business to make a profit, I just wish I could afford one... just did maintenance on the car, A/C failed this morning. I simply can’t justify spending $5k on a yak, $900+ on a trailer, etc... Looks fun though.

    • @alishabab3
      @alishabab3 5 лет назад

      Its not but you last on a battery and the hobie lasts on the body.. who will last longer? I'd say a human will last longer then a battery considering batteries cost a bit on only last a few years and they can have many faults also you got faults with the motors that may need to be fixed which would cost money.. but leg power well.. i have had a hobie for 9 years and never had any issues.. i been inshore, offshore, through surf and not one issue and can go for many hours. Can the twin troller do the same?

    • @TwinTroller
      @TwinTroller 5 лет назад

      @@alishabab3 Your questions are valid but have very little to do with the question of which is a better fishing platform. Yes, batteries don't last forever, but they can be replaced. Yes, motors don't last forever, but they can be replaced. And, they're cheap. The question is do you want the best FISHING platform, or a great exercise machine. You could find many valid reasons for wanting a kayak over a Twin Troller for your needs (going through surf, etc.), but the kayak is not a better fishing platform for most fishing applications or most people. This Hobie 360 drive is not about fishing. No-one is pole-in-hand fishing in their promos while operating the 360 drive. In a Twin Troller you can do this because it's operation is 100% hands free.

      Yep, just imagine how many fish you can buy with 5K. You could return home with an expensive toy and no fish. They're just toys for the boys and the more they cost the more they buy them, leaving those who can't afford to foot 5K for a one man dinky with nothing. Why do they do it? Because having something too expensive, like a Mercedes or BMW, they can impress the Jonesies. But the Jonesies aren't interested in Dinky-dis, they have yachts, big boats, not tinnies kayaks. LOL. They will soon find themselves in the 'I made a mistake' situation and then they will sell it when they realised that all that money spent for a few fish? And when they sell it, watch how the toy has lost value, as after a few months, from 5K when purchased to 2K when sold.

I can buy a 40,000 CC boat but don't want one to much trouble not worth the effort .We don't fish from kayaks for the same reasons as fishing on a bass boat it's not a comparison . People spend 5 grand on golf clubs, bikes and all sorts of things do i think its worth it not for me to say. It's like a tool If it makes your sport more easier and enjoyable and you can afford it Go For It ! Plus Hobie has plenty of other kayaks to choose from they are still making the Pa 12,14 2020 180 for 1,000 less. I will be buying a 360 just having a hard time with color LOL.

    I see a lot of ppl on here talking about the price and yeah it sounds like a lot but take a bass boat on a nice sized lake eats 300 dollars a day on water and then wintering the boat other 200 then Motor repairs Lets say other 200 I know bc i know ppl who have boats it adds up where this kayak takes no gas and is powered by u I know where the smart buy is

      Still rather have an aluminum boat with 5 hp motor, or even a trolling motor

  • @kimschmutzler1910

    We think it is wonderful for Outside versus those gasoline boats that only damage. Right on Hobie however that is an expensive piece of plastic.

    Yup on the design. Nope on the price. Heh.
    How long until patent expires on this one?
    I mean, that's SUPER kewl but I'm willing to paddle for $3500.

    Dear Santa...
    How much resistance is on the 360 handle when you turn the drive?

    • @KayakDIY
      @KayakDIY  5 лет назад

      Cup & Cone totally manageable even at high speeds, but I do “slightly” notice increase resistance at higher speeds when using 360 handle. The drive and system is shocking. Can literally spin on a dime. The going sideways to parallel park by a dock is killer. Folks just need to decide how bad they want it. I try not to talk heavily on price and value because that varies heavily based on people’s budget. It is $4649 -$4799 for the PA12 & PA14. That is before taxes and “potentially” any shipping costs.

    Where are you people getting your numbers from? Kayaks and small plastic bass boats have always been expensive. A decent aluminum jonboat is better than $2k.
    Those plastic pelican boats are better that $1200 and thats with no trailer. Those old school Basstenders are $1500 and up... I just saw a few on Greedbay last week and they were out of line too.My Current design touring boat was $4k.. and talking about jetskis.. best of luck in finding a seaworthy ski for for that money... Maybe you guys have better luck than i do in finding bargains.

      Not very well. I’ve tried to paddle Pro Angler kayaks and it is not a pleasant experience. It is doable though.

    By far the best Kayak on the market not even a competitor close to the quality this is the Royal's Royce of Kayaks and at the price of one is there down side.

    • @KayakDIY
      @KayakDIY  5 лет назад

      Only "Potential" downside is that it is more complex in design. Anytime you add more complexity you increase the likelihood of failure. However, if anyone can pull it off and create a reliable yet complex design kayak...Hobie can. They also stand behind their products.

    It’s still not as efficient as a propeller, at the end of a stroke there is a dead spot where no thrust is being generated. A prop is always turning, no dead spot, and so always generates thrust, therefore more efficient. Over a distance this makes a difference. Very manoaverable though.

    Cool innovative design, but what was great about the normal pedal drive was that its not a complex build. So if it breaks or you gotta do maintainence on it, you wont have to be sitting at a table pulling hairs out of your head. Imo simple is better and the whole 360drive is kind of a gimmicky cash grab. Hobie is making a good effort though, and hopefully it serves others well on the water.

    Wishing i hadn’t watched this. I was gonna get the newest Hobie seen the price laughed. And decided to buy the Bass Tracker Classic XL 50HP 12k instead. But after seeing how well this maneuvers. Am thinking of buying the 360 instead. My last hobie I just wished had a reverse never dreamed of turning on a dime. Great video

    All these people complaining about the price must not realize that the previous model wasn't exactly cheap at $3700. I believe you will still be able to buy the non 360 model but for $900 more you get the 360 version. To me the 360 option is worth another $900 on a kayak that's not cheap either way.

    • @KayakDIY
      @KayakDIY  5 лет назад

      vouthy vith at the moment this is only a Pro Angler series “optional upgrade”. So my understanding is they will still have regular Pro Angler and then the 360 will be an optional upgrade. You can’t use 360 pedal drive in any other kayak other than a Hobie hull designed with the 360 drive well. The 360 drive well is a complete redesign and is nothing like what we have seen over past 10+yrs.
