Oh why did I wait so long to replace my ancient iPad? ruclips.net/user/postUgkxhcEDB3r-OJ3_X5hQzr7k1ZofTQy1ao_U This is a perfect size with perfect features. Like all my Apple products I am able to intuitively navigate my way around. I like the fingerprint button, though I have to update it from time to time. I purchased a bluetooth keyboard so I can use this to write more easily. And the price was outstanding. I take my iPad with me everywhere. It's my buddy.

I use the 11’ 2018 iPad Pro and it is great. I find the bigger iPads too big for me. I always go with the 64GB storage as all of my work is stored in iCloud Drive - never use more than 30GB. I also have the iPad Mini 6 as a 2nd device and great for sketching ideas. I’m thinking of up grading my 2018 iPad Pro to the new 2022 iPad Air as it has M1 and 8G of ram. I love your video.👍

I have a similar set up, except I went all out last year for the M1 iPad Pro with 16gb of RAM.
I think the 11” is the sweet spot for a Cary and drawing. Used to have the 12.9” screens, but didn’t like it. To heavy to be a sketchbook.
The iPad mini is appealing even easier to carry, and I do all my brainstorming there and start off my projects. Then i airdrop the files to my Pro if I need something more polished.

This is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you so much. ❤️
I decided to get an iPad mini 6, because I can draw on screen of my computer when I’m at home, so I intend to use the iPad primarily for drawing on the go or casually at home. So the small size is a plus.
An idea: If you want to get a feel of the sizes, you can get the measurements online and cut them out of cardboard. Then you can hold them and sketch on them. It is not completely the same, because there will be bezels and UI that take space up with a real device, but it gives you quite a good idea of how it will feel in your hand. :)

I've done exactly that while trying to decide on a model. I still haven't decided which size I like the most, but I'm very tempted by the Mini just for the convenience of being able to carry it around easily. And it can be held in one hand, so don't need a stand or table. Currently using a borrowed iPad till I make up my mind.

I've been loathed to ever give Apple money, but they've genuinely done good business by getting Procreate as an exclusive to their egregious money funneling systems. It's absolutely painful that there's not an equally competent Android equivalent program. 100 bucks for the Apple Pencil alone is just too scandalous for any casual drawer to justify.

@Loftivee I started using Procreate on my 2nd gen iPad Air. You don’t need the top of the line IPad to do that and since Apple has added the Apple Pencil to their lower priced models, that would be a great entrance point to both the device & the app. I had to use a stylus with my old iPad Air but really like the ease of use with the Apple pencil & my iPad Pro 2nd Gen. One difference between models is the number of layers you can use but I’ve not had an instance where it prohibited my using it.

I have a 9.7" 2016 ipad pro which I bought used for about 400 bucks, and it's been going strong for 4-5 years already! I get tons of layers in procreate even with outdated IOS 10 or something. And I also have the 32 GB version only, and it only now starts getting low on space. So the "worst" pro is absolutely good enough. Size does not really matter since you can zoom. A huge selling point for me was that even if I rarely go out to use it on the go, I still can so easily take it, draw a minute, then put it to the side, and it's so tiny it goes anywhere without being in the way.

If you’re deciding between the M1 iPad Pro and the M1 iPad Air, I think it comes down your screen size and storage size preferences. If you don’t mind the smaller screen size and you’d be happy with 64GB storage, the iPad Air is the cheaper choice, for neaaaaarly the same quality iPad. But if you’d want to get the iPad Air with the 256GB storage, you may as well pay a little bit more for the iPad Pro and get a handful of better features. Of course, all that is just my opinion. :)

Hahaha this is huge ! thank you, just been wondering if I should invest in a new iPad recently. I now realize I have started my professional artist career with the worst iPad ever for making art (reg 2018) that I have been using for 4 years now

I have the iPad Pro 12.9” 2017 and very happy with it, but it is hard to carry around. It replaced my iPad Air 2013 (not procreate compatible), I carried it in my bag every time I gone out. The 9.7’’ screen is an okay size screen, and thinking maybe my next one might be a 11” screen, for I can carry it around, in my normal bag.
I still use my iPad Air as a screen screen; to watch tutorials, for photo reference. The 32GB storage in it (which I upgrade from a 16GB), was not enough storage for regular use.
I use a iMac as my computer. I enjoy using my iPad as a laptop. Ideally if Apple made a bigger iPad then the 12.9”, I would get it as my main workhorse iPad and a good 10-11” iPad as my travel iPad.

I'd love if my iPad could replace my computer, but I don't think it would work for the things I do on a computer (like heavy video editing and working in Photoshop/InDesign/etc). But I certainly talked to people who used the iPad as a computer replaced! I think it really depends on what kind of computer activity you do. With the right keyboard set up, the iPad is really easy to use!

I feel like the 2018 iPad Pro 12.9 1TB is the best bang for buck!
As someone who is just getting into digital art but wants to practice it seriously, do you think it is worth it to go for a newer model, or am I right in thinking that the 2018 model as mentioned is a great choice? Is the difference negligible, or do you think shelling out the extra few hundred dollars for the 2021 pro is worth it for a beginner?
    Thanks!

if you are just getting into it. why not the iPad air 2022. it got the same m1 chip for a cheaper price.

This has been great! One more thing though, the original iPads didn’t have laminated displays like all the others which gave them a gap between the actual screen and the glass you’d touch. Would that matter when it comes to precision or feel?

It will affect accuracy, but you can adjust to it and work around it.

I've been tempted to buy an ipad and I feel like I should go for a medium size so it's small enough for me and small enough to put in bags etc, but I have not thought of the apple pencil. I might get a stylus that's basically like an apple pencil, but I have been told it's better to just get an apple pencil if I'm getting the ipad.

Hi the max layers at 16”x16” at 300 dpi in an iPad mini 6th generation (2021) is 19 layers.

    • @BrookeGlaser
      @BrookeGlaser  2 года назад

That's GREAT news! Would you mind sharing what version of iOS your using and much storage your 6th gen iPad mini (2021) uses? The ones I tested at the Apple store had 64 GB and ran iOS 15.1 and only got 7 layers at that size canvas. So happy to hear yours is able to get more!

Excellent and well thought out video on the topic!
I have a 10.2 from 2020(i think) and i LOVE it. Its so portable and inexpensive plusi have a laptop and a monitor in my home studio. I do wish it had more storage.
I doubt ill need to do any crazy work while I'm travelling.I paint traditionally but draw and plan using procreate, so if my work was primarily digital, i would definitely scale up in size and space for more layers and storage.

I'm buying a new one within the next month. I set my limit at $1000. I'm torn between the air and the pro. I'm not a professional. My art is a hobby that I love. I've also never owned an iPad before. The better camera and extra speakers are not a big deal for me. I don't plan on taking pics with it and I usually use my Bluetooth speaker.
Are the other differences worth the extra money? I know it's not a lot, but I just really hate to break my budget if I can help it.
Also, is there an intro to procreate class you can recommend or can I find tutorials on RUclips to learn how to use it efficiently?
I am very technologically inclined and learn quickly visually.

Less layers you say? When you have mouths, nose, eyes, eyes pupils, hair, arms, legs, hands, feets, toes, character clothing, etc... as you can see those numbers start to add up real quick! Especially for animation how many layers do you think you would need for serious and complex work? Do you think then that you would need something with less layers then? If I'm going to buy expensive devices like an apple device i better get my money's worth!
