  • carpaltunnelmas... My Free 5 Part Series of Videos about Carpal Tunnel and FALSE Carpal Tunnel Syndromes Updated in 2016
    carpaltunnelmas... The real reason you have carpal tunnel syndrome is muscle imbalance. The flexor muscles of the forearm become relatively stronger, tighter, thicker and shorter than the extensor muscles that perform the opposite action. This muscle imbalance bends the wrist forward, narrowing the carpal tunnel. The tendons that pass through the carpal tunnel also get thicker and shorter, this makes less room in the carpal tunnel. This irritates the tendons and further causes irritation and inflammation and pinching on the median nerve. To reverse carpal tunnel syndrome and not have carpal tunnel surgery it is necessary to balance the muscles. Stretching and exercises for carpal tunnel syndrome do not get as quick results as specific self massage techniques. You can get rid of the numbness in the hands, the tingling fingers, the pain in the forearm and tendinitis.

    Hilma's program has helped me out a ton; the number of problems I've solved in my left arm by watching all of her videos and "troubleshooting" as I watched was incredible. In fact, I never actually had carpal tunnel, but I did figure out what was going on in my arm through finding trigger points that were affecting different parts of my arm, back and neck from watching all of the videos was fantastic. This is an excellent route to go if you're wanting to explore options that might work for you without surgery (which in my opinion should be the very last option we choose). It might take time to find all of the spots leading to your issue, but I'm pretty sure you'll find them all if you watch all of the short videos in her program.

    Dear Hilma, CTS is not caused by muscle imbalance, it is mainly caused by friction and swelling of the flexor tendons at the wrist, usually in patients who repetitively use their hands. Massage is not a recognised or evidence based cure. However, around 20% of patients who have this diagnosed on clinical symptoms alone have a different cause to CTS (for which massage or taking things a bit easier for a while might in certain circumstances be helpful). Nerve conduction tests are very useful in making a correct diagnosis and predict response to the various treatment available. Wrist splints are not there to restore balance in the forearm muscles, rather they reduce hydraulic pressure of the inflamed tendons +/- fluid on the median nerve and slowly allow the tendons to heal themselves. They are very effective in very mild carpal tunnel syndrome through to mild-moderate CTS. Surgery is an excellent choice for suitable candidates (usually mild-moderate grades not responding to conservative treatments and higher) and you should not be discounting an excellent and effective decompression procedure (when properly performed) in order to promote a massage product. Your right that it takes hours to edit RUclips films (from personal experience) but the patients who are likely to benefit from your $47 course are equally likely to benefit from a $12-13 dollar wrist splint (from Amazon) which would help both those with tenosynovitis (the most common mimic of CTS) or very mild through to mild-moderate CTS.

    • @DiscomfortFree

      Hormonal changes often cause edema, which is fluid retention. That causes swelling particularly noticeable in the feet, ankles and hands. The retention of fluids can create pressure of the median nerve in the carpal tunnel. You can often lessen the fluid retention by drinking plenty of water (your body hordes fluids if you don't get enough). Eat healthy, avoid junk food especially sugar and deep fried. Exercise as permitted by your health practitioner. The movement of muscles is a big factor in moving the fluid. Walking for swelling in the legs. Raise the arms up and gently open and close the hand to help with swelling in the hands. Arm exercises are good but not gripping weights - use an open hand if you use them. If there is no underlying carpal tunnel issue, the problem should resolve itself after child birth.

    • @Whitestonehope
      @Whitestonehope 6 лет назад +4

      Surgery is an excellent choice? Slicing open your skin, cutting through your muscles and operating on them should be your LAST and worst case scenario option. A wrist splint will not heal almost anything. It just takes the work off of the inflamed muscles temporarily. If your symptoms happen to be so extremely mild that prolonged use of a splint reduces them, then you're lucky. If they don't come back after stopping use of the splint, it's a miracle.
      Massage is not an evidence based cure?? I'm a licensed massage therapist. I have successfully stripped out many dozens of forearms, ENTIRELY reducing and clearing the symptoms of carpal tunnel. I use careful analysis of flexors, tendons and aponueroses, finding which are most swollen and which are being overused. That combined with an anti-inflammatory diet has worked wonders. No pills, no knives and no MD's with superiority complexes.
      Forgive my bluntness, I'm sure you're well-intentioned; but I think we Americans have had enough of that narrow approach to our health and wellness. As wonderful as western medicine can be for our welfare, there are other ways to treat a problem. There is a difference between being an authority on health and claiming exclusive authority over the canons of health.
      Don't lose hope folks, and don't go under the knife unless you have no other options left. Take responsibility for your health, get ambitious about it. Be courageous and try many avenues if you can. Dry needling. Cortisone injections. Cryotherapy. Keep watching YT videos and keep learning! It's empowering and it strengthens your mind and your resolve!

    This is the best carpel tunnel advice you could possibly find I've been a car tyre fitter for 27 years using air tools I've had white finger for years a few month ago I developed carpal tunnel type syndrome mostly in my right hand on certain movements the pain on a scale of 1 to ten was around 7-8
    I've been an athlete for over 35 years so massage and stretching has been a big part off my life
    So as soon as I had the symptoms I started massaging my forearms and stretching 2 to 3 times a day including stretching the hand and forearms exactly as Hilma describes after a couple of weeks I am pain free and still using air tools and also punching punch bags so my hands get a lot of abuse
    Stick with everything in this video and I know 100 percent your pain will reduce
    I wonder how many failed operations could have been avoided if people took the time to do these simple excercises

    If you are over the age of 60 and you have carpal tunnel symptoms and you have not started anything new (hobbies, exercises, work) that you think is the cause, please see your doctor and look into a disease called amyloidosis. Carpal tunnel can be an early symptom and it's a very serious disease. My father had carpal tunnel for months and they missed the amyloidosis until he started to have heart arrhythmia problems.

    I want to share a history: I have a friend, she suffered from strong headaches which lead to medical investigation and discovering brain tumors. She was programed for surgery only if her condition turned worse since it is dangerous and she was only 15. One therapist noticed she stressed easly and figured out such tumors were originated by weakened blood vessels and suggested massage therapy. It worked; it is amazing what a GOOD therapist can do, from brain surgery to a massage room.

My symptoms started within days of this manual labor. Locking thumbs numbness in arms and fingers which cause me to wake up every night. At one point in this period I had a spurt of working out for two weeks. I did a lot of push ups. During this time the pain and symptoms completely subsided. I believe this video is a great explanation for the resolution of my problem.

    Did the massage thing until it got so bad and then had endoscopic carpal tunnel surgery seven years ago. I'm a hairdresser so couldn't go to work only because I wasn't supposed to get the stitches wet so I took advantage of that and took a few days off but had I worn a rubber glove, could have worked just fine. It was a miracle, pain was gone didn't have to do any pain medication. An hour after the surgery, I stopped at the grocery store and then went home and played on my computer. My doctor said I could do anything that was comfortable for me. I had only a loose gauze bandage covering the stitches on the 2 small areas (wrist crease and palm line) which I can no longer see. Would I recommend the endoscopic surgery? Yes! Yes! Yes! At some point I'll have my left hand done but, it's controllable right now with a wrist brace some nights.

    Hilma you have probably heard of my friend Gerard Hartmann from Ireland I've learnt so much from my visits to him over the past 14 year . I used the massage techniques and stretches he would have used on me to erase the carpal tunnel type symptoms . Your video and advice is second to none if only every person could see this it would help so many . I think the poor success rate of carpal surgery is not down to the surgeon or it being a tricky operation it is the fact that the patient goes back to the same routine over using the same tight forearm and hand muscles so there back to square one

    Thank you for this! I have broken both wrists and have a lot of scar tissue, especially on the one I did last year, with increasing pain and tightness in that wrist and pain in both wrists and forearms. I have been unable to hold a plank or any all fours position in the Pilates due to pain in my wrists and doing simple things like typing and massaging the knee I just had surgery on are very painful. My PT told me to start doing my weights for my wrist extensor muscles and now I see why! It's also important to hear that stretching alone will not solve CTS quickly, but a program of massage, balancing the muscles by strengthening, as well as stretching is most effective.

      I hope your wrists feel way better! Another great way to strengthen the arches of the hands is to put a little (or a lot) of weight on your fingerpads. Make a "tent" with your hands, with the center of the palm lifted, and then claw the floor with as much weight as you can stand on your fingers. Give yourself a break, then keep going. I do downdogs, planks, and arm balances like this to help my wrists.

The opposite muscles are the rhomboids in between the shoulders. Do exercises where you squeeze your shoulder blades towards each other - you can try that when you row - to strengthen those. Carpal tunnel can actually start in the neck, as with a forward and bent head carriage. I have gotten that tingly feeling in my hands when not even typing or writing etc. just from keeping my neck in a bent forward position for too long.
    Another thing that can help, when the problem is in fact due to using the hands, is to put a therapeutic magnet, north pole side touching the skin, where the carpal tunnel is. This is NOT in the wrist. It is about an inch and a half above where the wrist meets the palm of the hand, midline. You can secure the magnet to that area with something like Nexcare surgical tape when you are writing or doing art work or typing.

    • @DiscomfortFree
      @DiscomfortFree  5 лет назад

      There are several places where tight muscles can impinge nerves. These are False Carpal Tunnel symptoms and can be just as serious. And the neck bent problems can create other symptoms (like headache, posture imbalances leading to more problems). Cell phones, tablets, and laptops have made this more and more common. False Carpal Tunnels do not cause carpal tunnel syndrome - although they can occur at the same time.

    I put no stock into someone without modern medical training claiming to know more than a doctor. If you want to be sure you have CTS, have a nerve conduction test. (It's annoyingly painful but it won't kill you) if you have it, start with wearing braces at night. If you see improvement it's mostly likely a reduction in inflammation. If you can live with the braces, great. For me, one hand didn't improve enough using braces. I've now had both done and don't regret it for a second.

      +Armus Skinofevil You did not do anything proactive before your surgery did you? In the city I live there are at least 15 doctors that do carpal tunnel surgery. There are three hand specific clinics. One is surgery oriented. Two have no physicians, just occupational therapists, physical therapists, and massage therapists (and it is not namby, pamby massage.) Here is one of them www.cdahandtherapy.com/ which unlike many doctors goes after the cause not the symptoms. I was friends with a physical therapist who used to be there and also knew a massage therapist that was there. Their success rate is extremely high without the potential risks of invasive surgery. I have lots of testimonials and over a period of 20 years I have done a lot of study and hands on experience. Surgery should always be a last resort unless you have let it go so far that well...
      Do a google search for what clinics ask you to do for yourself after the surgery. If you spent even a fraction of that time working on yourself, surgery could be avoided.
      FYI nerve conductivity tests can be false positive or false negative - check it out.

    Hi Hilma. I am so glad I found this video. I have an online business and have been playing guitar and bass guitar since 1986. There are nights when I wake up in the middle of the night and both of my hands are asleep. Currently, I have pain in my left wrist (6 on a scale of 1-10, but was an 8 two days ago) I also have constant numbness in my left pinky and the half of my ring finger closest to it. Initially I thought it was a symptom of diabetes as my family is easily prone to it, however, I tested negative for it and my aunt suggested that it is carpal tunnel. The symptoms certainly make sense. I have been wearing a brace since I aggravated my wrist last week. I am looking forward to seeing your other videos and I truly believe that I can resolve this without surgery. I am always open to any advice.

    • @DiscomfortFree
      @DiscomfortFree  8 лет назад +5

      Hello Thom, You do not have carpal tunnel syndrome as that is a pinching of the median nerve. The numbness in the pinky and half of the ring finger are a symptom of ulnar nerve pinching. Generally this is caused by tight forearm muscles on which pull/ compress an area in the elbow known as the cubital tunnel.
      You need to loosen up ther forearm muscles in general and especially alongthe bone on the little finger side from wrist to elbow. Can also help to stretch hand back and simultaneously sideways (reaching back on the little finger side). You can use your other hand to help - But never stretch to pain.
      Also try to avoid movements or positions that cause wrist pain.
      With Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, the numbness is in the palm side of the thumb, first finger, second finger, and the inside half of the ring finger, plus part of the palm.

    This is an ad precursor. I have searched carpal tunnel for years, and i think we all realize that everything that is, is on the internet, because people like to tell what they know, and they may earn monies per view on RUclips, so there are always people telling on multiple videos, the same info if it's legitimate. If it is, it will be comparable, and this is not. Since she is the only one claiming this procedure, whatever it is; she never gets to it, you have to assume she is the only one that knows it, which is highly unlikely, and MOST likely bogus. Even if she IS the only one that knows it, breakthroughs don't exist in a vacuum for long and copycats who have paid for her how to videos would've posted their own how to's in the years since this has been out, and i'm not seeing them.

    Hilma, I do not CT. I overused my 2nd and 3rd fingers on both hands about a year ago playing a game doing the same constant repetitive motions and holding down keys (on keyboard) and buttons (on mouse) with those specific fingers. Due to this, a year later, I still haven't recovered. I can't, for example, go for more than minutes of active clicking before my finger gives out. In addition to all this, at the same time, those two same fingers on both hands developed extreme hypersensitivity on their fingertips.
    I've gone to an array of doctors and physical therapy and nobody has a clue. I tried everything from braces to supplements to trying stretches to steroids to various medications and more. Currently, my neurologist things I have neuropathy even though his EMG and nerve conduction studies show my nerves are fine. He just keeps increasing my dosage of Lyrica. I am now beyond the recommended max dosage for neuropathy and it does nothing. Nothing has. Nothing has helped. Do you have a clue?
    Thank you.

    • @DiscomfortFree
      @DiscomfortFree  7 лет назад

      First, question your high dosage of Lyrica, that seems insane to me. www.drugs.com/pro/lyrica.html
      While no I don't know the answer, my suspicion is that it might be with your forearm muscles. Feel them with pressure from wrist to elbow for tenderness, and especially when you move those two fingers up and down.

    • @joep9052
      @joep9052 7 лет назад

      Hi Hilma, thank you for responding! I will question it again, though I think one of the big reasons he keeps just increasing dosage for it is because he really doesn't know what else to say.
      I did what you said, and there is, indeed areas where I have tenderness in the forearm if I apply firm pressure (with light pressure, I don't feel anything).
      Do you think my hypersensitivity on the fingertips is related to it too?
      I wonder if it really never was neuropathy. And if it, I keep hoping if it was caused by the RSI, that when the RSI can be healed, it will too.
      In either case, both the repetitive stress injury in those fingers and the hypersensitivity each by themselves are crippling to my whole life -- career and otherwise.
      I think your suspicions are correct. Do you know what I can do about it? Are there any solutions?
      Thank you again for caring and replying! You've already diagnosed it better than anyone else after a year of visiting so many medical professionals.

    • @DiscomfortFree
      @DiscomfortFree  7 лет назад

      I would suspect that that they are very related. You need to loosen those forearms. You can self-massage by placing your forearm on a padded surface like a folded towel and use your opposite elbow (not the pointy part, but the flat part next to it) and massage across all the forearm muscles with particular attention to the most tender places. You want a pressure that is firm. A "good hurt" is fine but a bad hurt or pain is not.
      If you want a professional approach, call chiropractors in your area and ask if they are skilled with ultrasound therapy, and see if they would work on your forearms without having you sign up for multiple visit. Ultrasound should always feel warm an comfortable, if it burns or is painful stop it immediately - and never return (improperly used it can cook flesh). Applied right it is amazing and may take several days after one treatment to know how well it worked. One treatment may be all you need. However the self massage is very effective. Do it five minutes at the most on each arm 2 or preferably more times a day.
      According to www.drugs.com/pro/lyrica.html you need to wean youself off Lyrica gradually because stopping can be very problematic.

    • @joep9052
      @joep9052 7 лет назад

      Hilma, I can't thank you enough! I will try following your advice. By any chance, do you have a guess about how much time it might take for my repetitive injury and hypersensitivity to heal by doing just the self-massage as you described? Do you think I will be able to fully heal?
      Also, should I do any special massages or stretches or is the self-massage enough you think? I saw this hand and forearm product on Amazon at smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00596VWHK/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Do you think I should try that too?
      I will also make sure to heed your advice on weaning back gradually from Lyrica. Thank you again so much!!! If this works, it will be giving my life back to me!

    But the question is why do you have a compression in the median nerve. It is either muscle imbalance in the forearm pulling the carpal tunnel in or swelling in the tendons that run under the carpal tunnel or both. The swelling is caused by swelling in the tendon sheath caused by irritation - usually pieces of dead cells because the synovial fluid has dried up due to repetitive use. White blood cells are needed to remove the dead cells, this is encouraged by mechanically working across them.

  • @DiscomfortFree
    @DiscomfortFree  12 лет назад

    The transverse carpal tunnel ligament (also has other names) is like a strap that keeps everything within the carpal tunnel in place without bulging out. The purpose is to provide leverage for the tendons. The forearm muscles control most of the movement in the fingers. The 9 different flexor tendons go from the forearm to their specific fingers. When the ligament is cut in surgery the leverage is reduced and that makes the grip weaker.

If the flexing stretches my muscles it seems there would be less pain not more. Also I get pain & some swelling in my palms. Can this be caused by ct? Sometimes when my ct acts up I feel pain in my elbow too. Also sometimes when I grip & lift I get a pain in my thumb with a sharp pain on the wrist right below my thumb. Maybe several diff. problems?

    Best information I've come across regarding this set of issues, and given my activities (electrician, guitar, mountain biking, lots of driving, computer etc) it makes perfect sense.
    Is there any kind of muscle work that should be done to build up the counter muscles or is massage an adequate response?

    • @DiscomfortFree
      @DiscomfortFree  10 лет назад

      Hi Jasher, You want to get the flexor muscles loosed first as muscle fibers stuck together (knots) or muscle cells stuck in contraction (trigger points) not only are a major contributor (sometimes the contributor) to carpal tunnel problems, but they also make those muscles weaker. However strengthening the extensors will help but not as fast as specific massage. Use opposite action of squeezing a ball by extending hands, wrist and fingers against resistance. There are some products for that but you can also rig something up using rubber bands.

      Hilma Volk Thanks for your follow up, the symptoms I am experiencing are not typical of carpal tunnel (I have never encountered numbness in my hands) however I have noticed a reduced range of flexor motion, weakened grip, tightness and pain in the flexors, and I have had a few hyper-extension injuries due to the reduced range of motion. Given all that I think following through with your treatment plan for carpal tunnel will address the issues I am experiencing. What is your opinion on this?

    Hilma, I have bruising (broken blood vessel) on the tip of my right ring finger along with small swelling on the same finger in the area where you would put a ring on. This finger is very sensitive to touch or picking even the lightest object up, I have the same issue with the left ring finger. Also over the weeks it's got worse as it's now in my middle finger and small finger of each hand. On my index finger a smallish dent as appeared and the other day the door was stiff at home, I pushed it with my thumb and now that is sensitive when I had no problems with it beforehand. I've had this for over 10 weeks now. I've seen the GP who didn't think it was carpal tunnel and I've seen a physio who wasn't sure what it was. He checked the central nervous system but it didn't correct the sensations in my fingers. It's not numb or a tingling feeling it's more a sensitivity which is from pressure I believe as I have bruising and swelling and at the bottom of the finger if I press that area i can feel a dull ache. I've had it over 10 weeks as I say, my job was admin on a computer and 2 weeks before the first pain I had in the hand I went rock climbing for an hour which was my first time and the week later I went rowing for an hour which was my first time...these were both of a weekend and then I was back in work in the week when the pain came at the end of that week. Do you know what it is and what to do to treat it ? Also when typing it can hurt in the wrist area otherwise it's okay and if I lean my elbows on a solid surface it's uncomfortable and if I rest my wrists the same on the same surface I feel they are compressed and that's with minimal pressure at all.

    • @DiscomfortFree
      @DiscomfortFree  4 года назад

      I cannot answer your problem. But I will address the last parts first. Do not rest your elbows on a solid surface. That can compress the ulnar nerve which innervates the little finger and the half of the ring finger next to it.
      Do not rest your wrist while typing. I have a video that shows why -- ruclips.net/video/hcnahk-5YXE/видео.html
      Bruising is not a sign of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Numbness or tingling in the thumb, first and second and the half of the ring finger next to the little finger is a sign of median nerve impingement (of which CTS is one cause).
      My guess (and it is just that) is that you damaged both the small blood vesicles and the small nerves in the fingers while doing that rock climb (assuming you were on real rock and not in a gym). There are many things that can do that besides climbing on rocks -- as mundane as using a kitty litter scoop with a handle that is not round, using any of many types of unpadded tools - like garden trowels, scissors, pruning shears, carrying buckets with wire handles, carrying laundry baskets that have edges that dig into your fingers, etc.
      Possibly a nerve in your thumb had only been damaged a little, but became worse when you pushed with it. Just like a fractured bone can become a broken bone without a lot of extra pressure).
      Small nerves in the hands and fingers do grow back very slowly, even if severed, generally taking two months if not re-aggravated.
      Again all of the above is only possible explanations of your problem. Again my opinion only.

    • @deanVodkahouse
      @deanVodkahouse 4 года назад

      @@DiscomfortFree Thank you Hilma, it was indoor rock climbing with some real rocks but nothing with sharp edges. Yes so what you think it could be does that explain why I don't feel any discomfort until I touch or pick something up with those fingers ? I tried lifting a glass up holding it between my thumb and each finger separately, index finger fine, middle finger I felt the sensitivity like it's a nerve issue and the ring finger even more so where it makes my finger give way and I have to remove it because of the ache and weakness I feel within it and the small finger is similar to the middle and this is now on both hands. What about the small swelling on the ring finger ? That appeared early on when I first had the initial ache in my finger and a burning feel and inflammation in my palm in the area just below my fingers where those natural bumps in the palm are below the fingers. That's mostly got better but the weakness and feeling that's it's s nerve that's making my fingers so sensitive when touching or picking something up persists. Im doing stretches for CTS and previously RSI but yes the fingers aren't tingling or other than the sensations of touching a nerve at the tips and when typing I can have a burning ache in my wrist.

Also I'm having the same symptoms on my pinky from wrist to elbow. Sometimes my thumb will twitch and come towards my hand.

    You are incorrect. The reason carpel tunnel syndrome occurs is because the tunnel that the nerve runs through is compressed. Massage may relieve symptoms temporarily, but the condition doesn't disappear. Surgery is needed to loosen the tunnel.

Today I learned one more condition caused by muscle imbalance! I started having problems from gaming, so i guess gaming is over for me, because I have so many other more important things to do. I fix some muscle imbalance conditions with electro stimulation... Do you think that by applying EMS to the forearms extensor muscles to rebalance and condition them would help with the carpal tunnel condition?

      +WAHB 50YY Electro stimulation might help. Haven't heard of it being used for that. Anything that loosens up the muscles should. I do not know one way or another if that helps loosen up "gunk" in the tendon sheaths that go through the carpal tunnel like ultrasound treatment, low level laser, or mechanical of specific massage do. Worth a try. Also include those tendons near the wrist when working on the forearms. And also include both flexor and extensor muscles.

    Hi, I like your information. Very good, common sense stuff! I'm like Zora below, in that I broke my left wrist [almost 5 months ago]. (I'm 55, and it was a very bad ["distal-radial"] fracture.) It had healed quite nicely, thru the hard cast, splint, and a few months of physical therapy. I got most of my ROM back. However, last month I found myself wringing out 2 full-sized bath towels every day, due to a leaky hot water heater. Soon after that, I got carpal tunnel in the left wrist. I've seen various places that "wringing out" activities are a good cause of CTS, so I have to assume I got it from that. The question is, will this eventually go away on its own (I'm NOT doing anything to exacerbate it, but only stretching exercises at best and have quite the P/T, as well), or must I go thru w/ the surgery that my orthopedist is insisting on? I'm a violinist, and realize that surgery really should only be a last option, and also that once it's done, it can't be undone. Should I postpone the surgery and adopt a wait-and-see stance? Thanks! :-)

    • @DiscomfortFree
      @DiscomfortFree  10 лет назад +1

      The missing piece that is so overlooked is tight forearm muscles pulling on the carpal tunnel. Go through the wringing motion without the towels and grip your forearm with the other hand -particularly on the sides up by the elbow. Will your problem go away by itself. Maybe since you are not aggravating it as much. But wait and see is not a good plan. Because you haven't learned anything. You can take action both to loosen up those forearms and doing so will help problems from occurring again. Because if waiting helps, you have just put the tight muscles loose enough so that they are under the radar. You are still using your hands. Again with wrist injuries three can be scar tissue, bone spurs, wrist bones out of place, but in your case a thing you did took you over the edge. Prevention and the reversal are the same methods. Prevention being the best.

      Ultrasound treatment - can be done by some chiropractors, osteopaths, physical therapists, some hand specialists. But call around first to make sure they have used it specifically for your condition.
      www.dupuytren-online.info/Forum_English/board/other-therapies/ultrasound-treatment-2_33.html
      See his link: www.keep-healthy.com/dupuytrens.htm
      Another treatment is an injection with an enzyme collagenase clostridium histolyticum with the brand name Xiaflex. Find out more about it on this link:
      www.medicinenet.com/collagenase_clostridium_histolyticum/article.htm
      Personally I would prefer such an injection by either a hand specialist or orthopedic physician rather that a general practitioner, even though they cost more. Again I would call the receptionist and ask if they have used the product on the problem.
      Some doctors look at a problem from a narrow perspective. Those who have a financial interest in a surgical clinic are much more likely to recommend non-emergency surgery than those that do not. They are suppose to disclose this info if you ask.
      I also read that recovery from surgery may take 6 months to a year. And my opinion should be a last resort if other methods don’t work.

    Loads? $47. for benefits that can last a lifetime. About the cost of a chiropractor visit, less than most single massages, about half the price of a physical therapy visit, less than one doctor visit and far less and non-invasive than surgery.

    My wrist doesn't hurt as much. It is my middle finger all the way to my pinky that hurts when i add pressure on them. There are no pain in my thumb and index. I see no visible symptoms of inflammation nor swelling. It's been 7 days and i'm not but if it is carpal tunnel. I got it out of no where one night. Is it because i use the mouse too much playing games or?

    • @DiscomfortFree
      @DiscomfortFree  10 лет назад +1

      I'm confused by your description. Do you mean your middle finder and your ring finger and your pinky are involved? What do you mean when you add pressure on them - how are you adding pressure? You do not have the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome, but you do have a problem, but I need more info.

    • @AhryaVT
      @AhryaVT 10 лет назад

      By adding pressure i meant i can;t compressed my middle finger all the way to my pinky together or it'll hurt really bad. I tried wrapping them with a bandage so i won't be able to move it, but it hurts so i couldn't do that. My wrist doesn't hurt. It's just my fingers hurting inside. Like the way i hold chopsticks, or a pencil. i can't do that anymore because there's pain. I have no idea if its carpal because my thumb and index are completely fine. I'm not sure if it's because i hold the mouse incorrectly or anything else. I don't recall falling or injuring my right hand at all.

      Nancy Tran Nancy, you do not have the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome, nor does it sound like any major nerve compression issue. From what I am interpreting you say is that it hurts to do much with your middle finger. I am unable to tell you why, whether you jammed it or did something else to it there is no way I could know from here. However I suggest you use it as little as possible and if in two weeks it has improved it will probably keep improving. If it stays the same or gets worse I suggest you see a professional particularly if there are any hand clinics in your area. Using ice may be something you may want to try.

      I'm experiencing this right now, but not that kind of pain like nancy's feeling..I've been spending too much time holding and clicking the mouse this past few days, which is impossible for me right now to spend less time on it, cause everything I do in my job involves a mouse and a pen tablet. :(

    Excuse my ignorance, but how will massage actually address the muscle imbalance and strengthen the extensor muscles? Massage doesn't "strengthen" muscles?

    • @DiscomfortFree
      @DiscomfortFree  10 лет назад

      When muscles are shortened either by muscle fibers stuck together, or by scar tissue, or by muscle cells stuck in contraction - then the muscles become weaker and the muscles are also imbalanced because each muscle has an antagonist which does the opposite motion. Specific directed massage more correctly helps remove the weakness. While massage cannot make healthy muscles stronger, removing weakness makes it stronger than the weakened condition.

    You can also get carpal tunnel from having many other conditions such as Diabetes or Autoimmune conditions. To tell people that the real reason they have carpal tunnel syndrome is definitely due to muscle imbalance without history taking or examination is misleading. Also, in terms of biomechanics, flexion of the fingers is the normal resting position of the hand, it is not because of muscle imbalance!

    • @DiscomfortFree
      @DiscomfortFree  9 лет назад

      Sarah Osler Sarah, if you look at my disclaimer page there are a number of medical conditions that create numbness in the fingers including: This website does NOT address the following conditions: Diabetes, chronic renal failure, leukemia, lymphoma, lupus, amyloidosis, or any other medical condition which can be a cause of numbness or tingling in hands or feet; Causes of carpal tunnel syndrome that include hand trauma, Acromegaly, rheumatoid arthritis, amyloidosis, pregnancy, Paget’s disease, hypothyroidism, diabetes mellitus and tophaceous gout, or any non-mentioned disorders.; Nor does this website address brain injury, tumors or stroke; or any condition that has a sudden onset.
      My program is for conditions caused by either repetitive use or cumulative trauma. Examples of cumulative trauma would be postures like holding the phone on one shoulder, having the head down or forward for continuous periods of time, a lot of gripping. A huge portion of the pain people have is muscle imbalance. Part of what that imbalance can do is pinch on the nerves that innervate fingers.
      Muscle imbalance is one of the most overlooked cause of not only carpal tunnel syndrome but neck pain, back pain, knee pain, headaches and on and on. The trouble is that often medical and pharma follow the symptoms. Through media etc. people in our society are more likely to ask what should I take rather than what should I do.
      Also if a person has something like diabetes any portion that might be caused by physical use is likely to be overlooked.

    • @sarahosler9442
      @sarahosler9442 9 лет назад

      I understand that you have a disclaimer, I was referring to the fact that you have a statement in your video saying: "the real reason you have carpal tunnel is muscle imbalance". That is a very misleading statement.

    • @DiscomfortFree
      @DiscomfortFree  9 лет назад

      Sarah Osler But contrary to what you say neuropathy from diabetes and autoimmune disorders is NOT carpal tunnel syndrome. If is neuropathy from those disorders.

    • @sarahosler9442
      @sarahosler9442 9 лет назад

      Anything that causes narrowing of the carpal tunnel is carpal tunnel syndrome, so disorders such as diabetes, obesity, swelling of tissue from AI disease all cause narrowing of this space

    • @DiscomfortFree
      @DiscomfortFree  9 лет назад

      Sarah Osler So treat the cause not the symptoms. I teach self-treatment of hand numbness. caused by either repetitive motion or cumulative trauma (muscle imbalance including poor posture. Anyone with a medical condition should find out as much as they can about what is affecting their one and only life. Foot neuropathy can be a bigger problem in diabetics. That is not carpal tunnel related. Again go after the cause and forget the semantics.

    Hi Hilma, thanks for the video. I am right handed and use the computer mouse very often. I have mostly achy pain all the way from my palm, up my forearm (top and bottom), up the lateral tricep head, through my deltoids and up to my traps. I don't feel much tingling at all. Maybe a TINY bit... Do you think I have carpal tunnel?? And would I benefit from just strengthening my forearm extensor muscles? or anything else? thanks

    • @DiscomfortFree
      @DiscomfortFree  10 лет назад

      Cale Elac, You need to loosen up the forearm muscles first. (Which will also prevent carpal tunnel). Extensor strengthening is great after you've loosened up the forearm. Regarding the upper arm - are you reaching forward with the upper arm. Your upper arm should hang straight down form the shoulder joint to avoid stress on those muscles and adjust your station or seating accordingly.

    Hi Hilma,
    Thanks a lot for the informative video.
    It's really bothering me and I'm afraid if it might get worse to the extent that I need to stop training.
    I have consulted a physio, but it wasn't helpful. The exercise that she asked me to do (put the wrist flat, palm facing down on a bench, rotate it to the extreme in direction of the pinky finger and bend the forearm towards the outer palm in direction of the fingers x 10 times for 3 sets) worsened the damage. Previously I used to get a mild pain on the pinky side of the wrist while doing heavy straight bar curls, but now I get it even while flexing the wrist towards the pinky side without any weights. Now I have totally stopped doing any kind of bicep curls; but whenever I attempt, I get a tingling pain and a feeling something like continuous dislocation of a vein.
    Please help me with it, specifically how to fix it and avoid getting it back again.
    Looking forward to your response.

      Hilma Volk yes that's right. Numbness is not yet there.

    • @DiscomfortFree
      @DiscomfortFree  8 лет назад

      +Pallav Panda Seems to me what you have is a sprained wrist (which is the ligament between at least two of your wrist bones. My advise is to treat it like a sprain. No stretching and no doing any movements that hurt. Ice will be your friend as it is a natural anti-inflammatory and promotes healing. Anti-inflammatory drugs interfere with the healing process. (There are doctors who agree that this is so, but unfortunately they are in the minority). If you are doing anything that might aggravate the wrist you can help protect it with a wrist wrap for that period of time. But you really want to avoid doing anything that aggravates it until it heals. Depends on the severity but generally takes about 35 days. FYI you do not have symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome.

    • @pppallav
      @pppallav 8 лет назад

      +Hilma Volk Wow, I really wish it is what you're saying it is. I'll surely follow your advice and get back to you after 35 days with the progress.
      Thanks a lot for the help, you're amazing. Keep doing the great work.

    I play classical guitar and upright bass. Lately, it's been real bad. I can see quite clearly an indentation lengthwise in the underside of my left forearm. My hands go to sleep simply by raising them above horizontal. I've had carpal tunnel as far back as I can remember, either from guitar, piano, or more likely gymnastics (horizontal bar). Any suggestions?

  • @diaspiano
    @diaspiano 7 лет назад

    Hi, a year and a half ago I started playing the piano, and i never had any numbness in the hand. But my hands would get sorta tired and hurt a little bit. But recently I started to feel numbness in the 4th and 5th fingers of the left hand, but I dont get that tiredness in the hand anymore. Also, I recently started going to the gym too, an Im always practicing the piano. What could it be? Is it the gym? Is it the piano practice? Or both? Is it ok to go to the gym and play piano? Tks!

    • @DiscomfortFree
      @DiscomfortFree  7 лет назад

      The numbness in the 4th and 5th fingers are a pinching of the ulnar nerve and not a symptom of carpal tunnel syndrome. Probably caused by both the gym and piano. You want to loosen up your forearms, particularly on the little finger side, from your wrist to elbow. Firm massage techniques. Also, with your other hand, grab your whole thumb (including the part near your wrist) and stretch your thumb back and toward the side of the little finger. You should feel the stretch up to your elbow. Never do any stretch to cause pain). Also never rest your elbow on a hard surface.

    • @DiscomfortFree

      The most common thing would be tight forearm muscles. You can tell by squeezing different places on your upper forearm and feel if they are tight or tender. If so they need to get loosened up. Not quite as common is tight scalene muscles in the front of the neck impinging on the blood supply. An overlooked cause of muscle problems is medications - anything that has the word "liver" on the warning. Another possibility is a person's reactions to certain food or drink that are okay for other people - there can be a long list of those - including coffee, diet drinks, alcohol, food additives, tomatoes, potatoes. I've even heard of people having weird reactions to oranges and watermelon. But I'd explore the tight muscles first.

    Hilma ten years ago I suffered multiple multiple fractures to the wrist/forearm in an rta I suffer terrible symptoms of cts my wrist was left somewhat disfigured, and the outer carpal bone is nobly, is it possible that the techniques you have on your website, which I'm about to go checkout, that will help, I'm loathed to have the op I've been offered, I've nearly had it 3times so far but always felt uncomfortable about it and canceled, some of the reasons have already been stated in earlier comments, as in the resultant weakness it can cause, plus my wrist is mashed up so badly they warned me that the risk of complications was higher than usual..
