In 1534, a radical group of Anabaptists took over the German city of Münster proclaiming it to be the “New Jerusalem”. After only a year, the three leaders Bernhard Knipperdolling, Bernhard Krechting, and John of Leiden (who had declared himself king) were executed and left to hang in cages on the tower of St Lambertus Church. These events, known as the “Münster Rebellion”, were the inspiration for the opera “Le Prophète” by Giacomo Meyerbeer. Franz Liszt took the theme of the Anabaptists from Meyerbeer's opera as the basis for his Fantasia and Fugue.
The three cages still hang from the tower of St Lamberti Church.
