4 Things Magic CANNOT Do in Harry Potter

  • Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we’ll be discussing a list of four major things that magic simply CANNOT do.
    As any witch or wizard will tell you-especially the ones who were Muggle-born-magic can do A LOT of things. It can make tidying up your home or flat a rather quick and easy task. It can literally knock the wand out of another person’s hand or make things levitate off the ground. It can create fire from thin air, make people look like other people, or appear invisible. It can even cause instant death. In fact, the list of what magic CAN do often seems rather endless. But there are actually a many number of things that magic CANNOT do-of which we’ll be covering four in today’s video.

    There's potions that can regrow bones, but there's no magic or potion that can fix your eyesight?!

    • @samstromberg5593
      @samstromberg5593 6 месяцев назад +8

      I find it unlikely that it's truly impossible and more likely just that it's not common knowledge
      Like we know Luna's mom would create her own charms so I'd bet it's pretty safe to assume there's some hermit somewhere who's figured out how and just never cared to profit off it
      Though I don't believe it's possible to regrow limbs - it's possible Moody just wanted the intimidating look of a wood leg but more likely you can't regrow them

    • @Mr33500

      Yeah. Irl, we can temproraily fix eyesight for several decades but wizards can't create a procedure to fix eyesight permanently with magic? The only way i can see that being plausible is stagnation in the wizarding community.

      Pretty sure they could if they wanted to but probably have never got around to the nitty gritty of it. In fact we do know that taking the Polyjuice potion does just that. It can fix errors of refraction (Harry becoming goyle) and it can also cause errors (everyone becoming harry).
      Its simply a matter of changing of changing eyeball length and shape. I think they could do it but probably would need to be precise and individualized and it would probably wear off necessitating applying the precise spell again. They could possibly wear an enchanted artifact near they eyes that could contain the magic for them but at that point why not just wear a pair of glasses.

    @daniels7907 6 месяцев назад +23

    Can't do, or can't do *yet?* Magic is not a stagnant science in Harry Potter. For example, the British Ministry of Magic's Department of Mysteries serves the same purpose as research labs do for muggles. There was almost certainly a period in the past during which Time Turners (and by extension, time travel) did not yet exist and had to be discovered. Snape's old Potions textbook was filled with examples of him improving on the standard formulas (some of which were flat-out wrong, even when Hermione tried them) in the manner of a scientist experimenting with chemistry. Then you have magical powers which are poorly understood and thus believed to be "one-off" gifts possessed by particular wizards and witches. Seers and metamorphmagi being examples of magical abilities that are not understood well-enough to easily duplicate.

    In the book GOF Ron thought he was paying Harry back for buying him some Omnioculars with Leprechaun gold the Irish Team mascots showered the stadium with. Later in the book Ron found out from Hagrid that Leprechaun gold disappears after a few hours. Ron got upset with Harry for not telling him the gold disappeared and Harry replied he hadn't noticed because he was more worried about losing his wand and the Deatheaters attacking the campsite. Ron just said it must be nice to have so much gold you don't notice when a pocket full of Galleons disappears and wished he had a Niffler. Hermione said now we know what to get you for Christmas.

      Maye it works like this: Anything created by magic is just a magical construct sustained by the witch/wizard's existence and when they die their magic is undone (with some exceptions). Like in the sixth movie Slughorn recounted how Lily turned a flower petal into a fish and when she died the fish disappeared. Or it could also follow a rule that all magic can be reversed.

    I have a diferent explanation for the eyesight limitation. It's not that is impossible to fix eyesight with the use of spells and potions. But these are complex and dangerous. With the help of magic, creating and mantaining glasses is a lot cheaper and easier. So most wizards prefer that to taking risks with forms of magic that could turn them blind.

  • @frosthounded
    @frosthounded 5 месяцев назад +3

    I think they could probably fix the eyesight but it's just not worth it when compared to just wearing the glasses.
    Errors of refraction come about due in the shape and size of eyeball and lens. We fix these with glasses that bending the light in a different manner that is better for your eye (which is individualized and why glasses arent always interchangable) or via laser surgery that alters the shape ever so slighty.
    We know that magic that chagnes appearance can affect eyesight as evidenced by Polyjuice potion affecting eyesight. We also know they could probably cast magic that affects the way light is bent since they have enchanted glasses and eyeballs and scopes.
    The problem with it being 'mass produced' into a simple spell would be:
    #1. It would need to be individualized and extremely precise, like transfiguration just a few specific strands of hair. Mess up hair growth spell and you just need to cut it up. Mess up an eye correcting spell and you would probably go blind (reversible but being blind for a few minutes would be inconvenient)
    #2. Refracting devices would still need to be individualized and you would still need to go to a fitting and all that.
    #3. It would need to be constantly reapplied or cast. This could be in the form of potion (maybe eyedrops) that you keep reapplying. A charm you keep casting. Or maybe an enchanted object you would need to keep on your person at all times (probably near your face)
    at that point. a pair of glasses really is just easier.

    1.) Bring the dead back to life. 2.) Create true love. 3.) Create real, nutritious food.
    4.) Hmm...I was gonna say "create money", but you actually CAN create gold with magic, IF you have the Philosopher's Stone/Sorcerer's Stone.

    Magic cannot bring people together from disparate parts of the world as the internet can. I belong to a group called the Stay At Home Choir. We are given learning and rehearsal resources from world class professionals, we record our parts in our bedrooms and living-rooms and send them in to be asembled by professionals. Sometimes there are over a thousand of us singing the same song together. We come from over 75 countries and from all ages and backgrounds. We sing in many different languages; I've sang in six so far and I only joined in early 2023. I suspect that if the wizarding world could do something like this it would go some way towards ironing out their differences.

    JK Rowling does not believe in matter. But gold is a little bit tricky to create, but I guess this would do in the Harry Potter universe
    1. Collect sufficiently amount of water
    2. Use muggle chemistry to separate it into Hydrogen and Oxygen
    3. Put it in some enchanted container
    4. Fire the spell Bombarda maxima
    Repeat step 4 and you should get a supernova. Now you are left with some heavy elements, including gold.

    You know, for all Voldemort’s genius, he was the dumbest wizard alive in certain aspects. If it were me, I’d have tossed a horcrux down into the Marianas Trench at the very least. Magic can protect items easily at those depths. But no human can survive the pressures down there. It would be quickly buried by the sediment from the hydrothermal vents and lost to time. If I could effectively toss it out of the window around LeGrange Point 1 or 2, it would literally be inaccessible to 99.9% of humanity and pretty much 100% of wizard kind.

      Invented information. You don't know if magic can withstand those pressures.

    Magic can’t make someone love you
    The Imperius Curse is triggered by this lie lmfao.
    You can literally use this mind control curse to make someone love you. Sure you have to keep it on them indefinitely but it’s still technically does the trick in my opinion.
    Magic can indirectly make gold too. We’ve seen plenty of people make gold with magic by creating sellable goods. Again in my opinion this is a credible workaround. There’s also the philosopher stone which can turn any mundane hunk of metal into pure gold.
    Lastly I don’t think age is a restriction cause the Age Line Dumbledore drew to protect younger students from being entered into the triwizard tournament included a joke for Fred and George Weasley. Not to mention they brewed aging potions to try and trick the age line in the first place.

      No, Imperius suppresses the will and you can force someone to ACT like they love you, but not to love you.
      All objects created with magic are limited in form and time, so no, they are not useful for creating gold.

    Magic cannot cause a muggle to become magical. But they can have magical children. Imagin your magical 2 or 3 year old make you do whatever they what to do. Like give them all the candy they want or make you kill all their brothers and sisters so they can be the only child. The magic community is so small it would be better if everyone had a little magic.

    Apparently magic cant fix wands. Olivander had to make multiple people new wands in the last book. But apparently, only the elder wand can fix a broken wand.

    I think it’s a safe bet that magic can’t change the weather. Well, have you ever seen anyone cast a spell to do that in HP?

    So, if you make a horcrux, do you have to USE it to come back to bodily form? Wouldn’t you need a portion of your soul to come back? That is never explained, but if anyone can find out, it’s you.

      @solaris9426 6 месяцев назад +1

      You don't actually need to expend a Horcrux to come back to a physical form if you have one. For example, Voldemort used a potion comprised of "bone of the father (unknowingly given), flesh of the servant (willingly sacrificed), and blood of the enemy (forcibly taken)" to resurrect.
