I have done a lot of work with charcoal and pastel in the past but new to watercolor. I have just fallen in love with it. Your tutorials are so great to follow--you go "slow" and give straight forward explanations of your techniques without over talking it. So very glad I found your tutorials! Thank you so much for sharing your skills with others!
You are so easy to follow and understand. Your videos are amazing and you’re painting are so beautiful. Thank you for helping me get started on painting with watercolours.
You nailed the tutorial 100%. No background noise, closed caption, pleasant voice, great info and last but not least, your amazing artwork! I hope there will be many more tutorials on the horizon.
I love chickadees; they eat right out of my hands. My watercolors arrived in the mail last night and I can't wait to try this. THank you for including your sketching as well as the painting; I love that as I need all the help I can get, lol.
Emily, I just wanted to say thank you for showing the entire process from start to finish. Most watercolor tutorials I've seen already have the sketch done in advance, and while I understand why they do that, I really appreciate that you showed the sketching aspect as well. I've been struggling with bird feathers, and this was very helpful to see your initial markings laid down and then how you painted them.
I'm generally not one to be painting birds but I enjoyed watching your demonstration. I also prefer to do a lot of my own mixing of greys and other shades.
Thank you for your Chickadee Tutorial Emily! I very much appreciate how you take the time to mention the colours used and tips about getting the proportions right for your sketch. I am sure that this will help a lot of artists.
Oh my gosh Emily thank you so much for this! I sketched with light gray watercolor and it was so helpful... I am so impressed with what I was able to make with your instruction! Thank you!
I’ve just found your bird paintings quite by accident. I love to paint birds and need to practice some more, these videos are just the thing to get me inspired. Simple yet beautiful. I look forward to seeing more.
Love this activity! Did my first one and learned where I need to improve so working on my good copy now. Love this series and your painting style and tutorials.
He is so cute. You make it look fun and easy. I’ve done a few birds. But I’m going to remember your tips on the next one. Especially never knowing what to do on the background. ❤️
Love your awesome step-by-step teaching style! Extremely informative and helpful. Thank you so much. I love birds and want to learn how to paint them. You have given me the courage to try. Thanks again!
You are absolutely a very talented artist and excellent teacher,l love you talk through the whole process it makes me aware of things I might overlook, thank you 😍
I absolutely love this tutorial! I’ve painted for only a month but I felt that I wanted to learn something different than just landscapes and this is perfect! I would love a “learn to paint birds” series that starts really simple and slowly gets more and more detailed😊 I now you have a lot of fabulous bird tutorials already but a bit more structured and class like. “This week practice on these birds and this and that” I love your videos 😊😍
Video tutorials on this channel are short, clear and concise, ideas are interesting and practical. All this is shown in a short but clear video. This is a great channel!!! What a talented teacher, how clear and accessible he explained everything! Many thanks to the author!!! love, health, well-being and prosperity to the channel!!!😘😘😘
Just found this channel by happen-chance. So glad I did. Just learning watercolor in my old age and am falling in love with it. Lovely painting, clear instructions. You are wonderful teacher. Thank you. Looking forward to trying this.
I like to use watercolor pencils to sketch my drawings first. They are a bit expensive, but if you are using them to sketch and / or add a little pigment to areas you want, then they will last a long long while. Just in case anyone was wondering ways to sketch without pencil marks underneath. 👌
Just did this tutorial tonight as my last entry for #Washtober2020. The prompt was "status" and I chose this because of how it made me feel. I look forward to doing more of your tutorials. Thank you!
Hi Emily! I am a long time subscriber of yours. I have watched you over the years to get inspiration and also to learn how to paint in watercolors. You are a wonderful and fully talented watercolorist. Thank you for sharing your talents with us!
He or she is my favorite of this series. Thank you so much, its getting alittle boring at home and this helps!I'm out of watercolor paper🤨when I get it this is what I will try to paint.Could you possibly do a tutorial on mixing watercolor paints together,I never know what colors to mix. Thanks for keeping us with sane!❤
I've just discovered your channel. Love your paintings, especially the birds! Could you please consider doing one or a couple on owls? Thank you, hope to see many more videos!
Yay. I think I like mine enough to give to my neighbors for a HNY card. Thank you. I painted one w/ a dif YT'r before. Yours came out much better. I think b/c of the care you took in teaching us the sketch. Thank you, Emily. You inspired me to subscribe.
Mil gracias y Salud.
Thank you so much for your tutorial. So some unknown reason I'm not managing to download the reference picture. Is there another way to get access to this picture?
I have trouble making eyes look just right, as you did with his gaze. The whole personality of any animal is reflected in their eyes: the light, the angle of the look, etc... Do you have any advice?
I think it just comes down to really studying your reference and noting both the eye shape and the location of the highlight within the eye, and then very careful drawing with the paint. :-)
I agree. However, until l master brush strokes, my approach henceforth shall be to do the eyes of a subject first, then continue on stress-free. I appreciated this relaxing tutorial. Very generous.

Thank you, Christine! I am so glad you are enjoying the videos! And great suggestion on color mixing!
The lighntess of the colour really supports this feather weight creatures - I think they might end up beingt too "heavy" optically using oils.
Ooh interesting observation! I agree but of course, I’m somewhat partial...
@@EmilyOlsonArt Me too ;-) I usually use oils exclusively...but I think I should reconsider ;-)
Cute
EXCEPCIONAL DIBIJO. ,INTENTARÉ HACERLO AVER KEMESALE GRACIAS
Very good.
🥰
I've just discovered your channel. Love your paintings, especially the birds! Could you please consider doing one or a couple on owls? Thank you, hope to see many more videos!
Welcome! I’d love to paint an owl! I’ll have to add that to my list. :-)

Do you erase your sketch lines? The chickadee is so cute! We have lots of them around our home - they are so entertaining 😉
Sometimes I do erase them, yes. Chickadees are my favorite backyard birds! :)

Why don’t you use a watercolor pencil for the outline?
You totally could!
How about a hummingbird!
That’s on my list! :-)
I drew the chickadee you painted but I didn’t color it.
Makes a lovely drawing, too! :)
I have painted a chickadee
Hummingbirds please!
Hello Love this painting!! Really easy to follow. Can you do ducklings and few different types of finches?
could not download your reference picture
Hi Linda! I double checked the link and it looks like it’s working ok. :-)
So this is way harder than it looks
You’re half way done and I’d still be erasing my sketch over and over.
😆 I've had to learn to paint fast with two small kiddos running around!
