it's a metaphor. think "by the grace of god". yeah this song can have different meanings to different people he had a very close relationship to his stepfather. I don't know how much you know about Dave but he's had a lot of loss in his life. his dad died of cancer when he was a kid, his older sister was murdered by her husband and his stepfather died. Matthews wrote this around the time his stepfather died, and found it hard to write a song about a stepfather. It can be heard as a song of lost love, whether it be of a family member or a lover"
