  • Today we take a look at my recent acquisition, the sickly Miltoniopsis Orchid. I would have waited a bit for some new roots, but as I see this orchid is really unhappy in her pot.
    ▼▼▼More info bellow!▼▼▼
Miltoniopsis are not the easiest orchids to fix and I think they are also misunderstood, along with being kinda fussy. These orchids enjoy moisture and humidity, but they are not terrestrial or semi terrestrial. They are true epiphytes, that means they do love air just as much as water.
For this reason, along with he size of the pot and my orchid, I chose a combination of seramis and leca. It might be slightly counter intuitive, but I know these orchids can do amazing in pure bark as well, if watering is adequate.
Providing aeration along with moisture is something more appealing to me, rather than offering excesses of water or air. We shall see how this goes :)

Tip for re-potting: I learned this from an orchid botanist in Chicago. Instead of cutting the entire root off, you can just pull (strip off) the velamen by gently pulling with your fingers, and leaving the actual string-like actual root intact. The actual string-like root never seems to decay and can be used to help anchor the orchid in the new pot when re-potting. (I'm sure they do actually decay as they are organic material, but the amount and rate are so slow as to be negligible. It is the velamen surrounding the actual root that gives us problems.)

Bought a Miltoniopsis yesterday one large and one small pseudobulb, buds are opening, gorgeous, but I’m told that it’s not a plant for a beginner, paid too much money for it ($50us) but being a beginner that is almost inevitable, live and learn.

Thanks for sharing Danny!! I have a miltoniopsis that I think is the same one. It looks very similar to me at least. Hope everything goes ok with your miltoniopsis:)

Great video. I might try dividing mine and potting it in seramis, it's huge but just dragging it's feet in life. 😧

Hi Danny. I also bought a miltoniopsis with only one pseudo bulb and I was like WTF?! 😑But it was so pretty that I couldn't resist to get it, anyways, I repotted it and I discovered that it's growing two new grows one on each side just like yours, you mentioned in the video you can try to train the orchid to fill the pot in other directions, how can you do that? It would be a good idea for a video. Cheers from Toronto, Canada ❄️☃️

Hi Danni, great repotting video. I have a question, how many eyes do a cattleya have? I'm asking because I bought a new cattleya a few weeks ago ( Cattleya Warner, Semi-Alba Showoff X L Purpurata El Supremo ), it was a division three psuebulbs it was sent bare roots, but most of the roots were dead, so I potted it with bark and moss. I wanted to help it grow more roots, so I kept the moss moist on top. Sadly this caused the tiny new growth to rot. I'm really hoping that the orchid start another new growth, but guess I will have to wait. Do you think a cattleya will be able to recover and start a new growth?

Hi Danni, today when I watered my small mtps, it wobbled badly in the LECA it was in. I discovered it had no roots so I bag and sphagged it. What would you have done? I don't have seramis, just Hydroton.

How do you go about training growths on a Miltoniopsis or any similar orchid? It looks so much better with the growths spread out a bit, however the few Im getting are stubborn to say the least. Also, the growths on that Nobile was definitely flower spikes, and it looks like its just a matter of weeks until I get flowers. :3

What's wrong with the coco fiber? I run a nursery in San Diego and that is all I use and love it

+Ryan C Hi, some products are not properly desalted and stripped of tanins, it depends on brand. Also the material is very fine and can be detrimental for epiphyte orchid roots in certain set ups and environments.

Hi, if the orchids look healthy there is no need to cut the spikes, it all depends on the health of the orchid :)
