  • Today we take a look at some new additions to the collection.. the intimidating Miltoniopsis :P
    ▼▼▼More info below!▼▼▼
    Since the flower shop decided to bring a whole bunch of them, I bought a whole bunch. Some look better than others, my only problem is with their root systems which don;t look very good in some cases.
    My plan is to start a new setup with the cool growers, using my older clay pots and sphagnum moss + perlite. The pot stays very cool in comparison to the environment and gives off quite the humidity.
    I also designated a place on the floor for them, where the cool air is found. I will probably use a humidifier and a small fan to help with cooling the temperature around the leaves.
    The new sphagnum moss I purchased is very clean in comparison to my older one and is very fluffy! I purchased it from here www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Zeland...

    I have a Miltoniopsis Hajime Ono using the same setup (after taking some beginner abuse!! It did not like semi-hydro). After 8 months in this setup she's FINALLY having new growths! A set back Miltoniopsis is no joke, but she seems to enjoy her life now. Let's see how she survives Texas summers!!

    This video came out just at right time for me! I love Miltoniopsis but haven’t had much success with them and just bought 5 last month, I sure will try your method of repotting them when their flower is gone.

    I love that moss too! I use it as part of my repotting for all my orchids, especially if I need the pot to retain more water.

    I really want to see your grow room. I'm interested to see where you keep the cool growing orchid apart from the others. I'm trying to figure out how to navigate this myself as my space is just that a space and not a room like yours or a greenhouse and I'm living now in the desert. I do believe that the spaghnum moss is the way to go for me at this point.

    I just purchased a Hajime Ono #5 (don't know about the #?) about 2 months ago and have managed to keep it going on my porch. I transplanted it into NZ moss in a glass vase and so far so good. He has kept his flowers and an unopened spike is doing well! I keep the glass in another thick glass vase with cool rainwater in it so that the humidity is constant and the water in the glass around it helps keep the roots cool. It also has its own diffuser of humidity! A pretty pampered orchid LOL! My only question at this point is what kind of light will Milt like? Thank you for all you share with us! Your orchids are beautiful!

    I'm very interested in seeing how this experiment works out. I love Miltoniopsis and would like to add them to my collection, but living in S. FL, USA I don't want to chance them. If you are successful with this experiment then perhaps I'll try a few. Thanks for sharing your ideas with us in this video. (I do have a species Miltonia that thrives here.)

    Hi Danny. Did you have LEGO in your yester Years? I can imagine how fascinating and large structures they would’ve been if you did. Another interesting vid on a different variety, and WHAT IF ... ...amazing, and in a fun approach to the hobby. Was there a bonus orchid hidden somewhere in there too ?? 🤣
    I’m repotting a rescue phal for mom and was in bark Is going to Leca. I think the bark was in such poor condition that I didn’t need to spray with hydro per. Actually I didn’t cut the dead roots either figuring they’ll fall off themselves too. My method of semi hydro for this is reservoir on the outside so I can drain completely and wash Leca whenever I need too. Method have served me well so far on a phal I bought at a show that was “beaten up” to sell it !! Anyways wish me luck.

    Hi! I have a Miltoniopsis waterfall that has a dead center leaf (the leaf that is attached to the top of the bulb). It's a fairly large plant with many growths and more than half of the growths have this problem. It just turn brown even before it's mature, while the outer leaves are healthy. I thought maybe it trapped water, but I don't know.

    I've grown miltoniopsis in sphagnum too (in a plastic pot) and they had good root production. Also had good results with semi hydro. Terrible results in bark, accordion pleating like crazy!

    Just watched this a second time. I have a Miltonia Komoda that hasn't done well (it has stalled). (It was an bonus plant from an orchid order. I don't want it to die.) Yesterday I removed it from a small bark mixed with charcoal and perlite (in a net basket outdoors) and put it in sphagnum in a clay pot. And, I have moved it indoors (in a/c, unfortunately) to a north facing window ledge. Should I keep the pot in a small saucer of water to keep it hydrated? I'll keep you updated on how it does. I do love these orchids because of the gorgeous pansy-like flowers.

    Question, how is it most plants you buy are in packed moss? Very tight packed moss! I don’t understand how they live in that! Like the last repot you did, very compact moss.

      It's more of a 'when do we purchase these orchids' question. Prior or post root rot ;)

    Hi,
    Just got my first Miltoniopsis, keeping her moist but not drenched and it has 3 spikes that are blooming. Some flowers have been open for maybe 3 days but the edges of the flowers are turning brown and get crunchy. What is going on? What do I need to be doing? It's potted in apg and a bark mix. I also have the pot sitting on rocks with water for added moisture. I also have a small fan blowing near the plant and it's near a window but not in full sun.

    At 5:11 what did you say that one was? Good luck with them, I've given up on milts completely! Except for a species, miltoniopsis phalaenopsis, which I've been growing for a couple years and haven't killed yet. That is the brand of moss I use as well. For me it lasts 2 years.

    Hi Danni, I’ve just bought my first miltoniopsis, I used your googling the image to research what it was as the garden centre just said orchid. Straight away I knocked a flower off. I’ve got 1 outer leaf that’s going a little yellow....I thought too much water but apparently they like water?

    How do you store your sphagnum moss after you've already soaked it?

    • @familhagaudir8561
      @familhagaudir8561 6 лет назад +2

      LinardBraslin You simply let it get crisp dry and put it in a bag.
      Before soaking the dry brick, you can break it in half and only soak one part to save room but alot of the strands will be cut smaller in the process (It can matter for mounting orchids, as long strands are easier to keep together. In pot it's irrelevant.).

    How are your miltoniopsis doing?

  • @brokenkeys1112
    @brokenkeys1112 6 лет назад +1

    I’m scared to grow miltoniopsis because they will instantly die in Australia because they are finiky and during winter it is very humid and during summer it is very dry which is not supposed to be like that for orchids. Also the temperature can get up to 43 degrees celcius and as low as 5 degrees celcius.

    • @familhagaudir8561
      @familhagaudir8561 6 лет назад

      broken keys111 Miltoniopsis will simply not tolerate much above 30°C for long, even if you somehow manage to give them 90% humidity and air mouvement. Forget Miltoniopsis in dry, hot climates unless you grow them with strong air conditioning.
      In your climate, Cattleyas will do much better as long as you don't forget to water.
      If you still want to try Miltoniopsis in a cool basement or something, general temperature guidelines for them are 15°C - 20°C if you can provide 40% humidity, 20°C - 25°C if you can provide 60%+ humidity, up to 28°C with 80% humidity and air mouvement.
      They do very well under a fluorescent light setup.
      A bit beyond that they stop growing, much above that they start to sulk.
      There is actually only one Miltoniopsis species that is a cool grower and it was not used much in hybrids. All the others are intermediate growers, but they demand such a high humidity that it is easier to "tweak" their culture with a bit with lower temps so they do fine with lower humidity.
