    That part about the seal sounds for the Stranger Things monster really reminds me of how they mixed the sound of an alligator to the voice of Benedict Cumberbatch for Smaug in the hobbit. I love the brilliance of some sound directors of playing with some pretty natural sounds to create some unknown, mysterious, creepy or simply epic sound. The right sound has such a great impact on the atmosphere!

    Godzilla and the T-Rex are the last from generic. You could've used the Cloverfield monster and the spinosaurus from Jurassic Park 3. That would have farther proven your point

    • @bio0link
      @bio0link 6 лет назад +6

      Yea, it was a very very poorly put together point. Even if you didn't know King Kongs generic Roar you would have easily put 2 and 2 and realize its not Godzilla or the T-Rex. He choice the 2 most iconic movie monster roars to talk about generic sound design.

  • @lvx969
    @lvx969 7 лет назад +17

    You should do the same type of video about Bloodborne. Some of the same things from Dark Souls can apply, but at the same time there is a lot of uniqueness about the monster audio, especially for beast bosses.

      obv I'm biased here cuz I'm familiar with all three sounds but like, you can definitely tell Rex and Godzilla sounds aren't trying to be mammals. And godzilla's in particular is very "science fiction" sounding, whereas the T-Rex sounds more like an actual animal. They definitely have characteristics and I wouldn't describe them as generic. There are shit loads of monsters out there with like, tiger roars and shit

    I really like when Soulsborne music changes depending on the stage of the fight.
    My favorite is in Bloodborne, when you fight Gascoigne in his in human form, the music is creepy with violins and such, but when he transforms to a beast, the music is pure screams.

    The fact that you thought you could fool me with that listening challenge for a single SECOND is a clear display of your HUBRIS. I know those sounds by heart. King Kong is the most generic but Rex and Godzilla have an iconic shriek layered on top that follows a distinct pitch. Rex's is like a chainsaw, Godzilla's is like a huge metallic gate screeching as it slides open with a lot of reverberation and not too much treble.
    Not even a JP or Godzilla fan I just know those sounds by heart.
    In case it isn't clear the bit about your "hubris" was a joke, love you. (In a purely platonic way!)

    This is brilliant. I'd love to see you do Alien Isolation, absolutely loved the sound design in that game, especially the station and offscreen alien effects, with the scuttling and scraping sounds coming from somewhere close in the vents but not quite clearly enough to figure out where abouts exactly, really freaked me out.

    Souls games are only considered difficult to beat by people that haven't played many games. Compare it to any nes game and they're easy as hell. The death penalty in Dark Souls is... you drop your souls and go back a bit. Try Contra 1. Get hit by 3 attacks and the entire game starts over. Most games from back before 2000 wouldn't even let you recover your souls, you'd just lose them if the game was made back then. They'd also make the entire game restart if you died 3 times.

  • @ThatRipOff
    @ThatRipOff 3 года назад

    Great video, but calling the T-Rex and Godzilla roars generic is... well kinda just wrong. Almost insulting, even. I instantly knew which sound was which, and was about to comment that you were wrong before the bamboozle. The T-Rex roar was a mix of a tiger and elephant, I believe, and it's one of the most recognized and reused roars there is. The Godzilla roar is even more unique. It's a recording of a glove sliding over a cello. That's about at unique and tailor-made a roar as it gets. You easily could've picked two other generic roars to put alongside King Kong and made your point. Perhaps Cloverfield and the Spinosaurus, as some other comment suggested.
