I lived in Kitzbuhel in the late 80s early 90s worked as a bouncer in the nightclubs. They open that course to the public a couple of weeks after the race and after a few snowfalls. Its still pretty scary just skiing it normally and some parts are so steep. Amazing race to watch. Should be top of every skiers bucket list.
Great to get the racers take on Kitzbuhel from two legends. I hiked down the course in early fall when son was doing a semester abroad in Austria. Cool town and Superbowl of racing.
. . . In summer '86 ,walked up and down the 'Hannenkahm' to the long-since replaced starting hut atop a 50 degree (at least) starting 'slope' . No film or video can convey the actual 'fall' on most of these descents . I was sore in the legs for following 4 days ... and I was well-used to walking the hills .
Been skiing for 50 years now and I have ski raced in college. Skiers at this level are one of the most in shape athletes out of all the sports. I still think hockey players are the number one most in shape athletes. This downhill race has to be the scariest race of them all. Watching Franz Klammer race here was the best ski race I have ever watched. Think it was back in 1984.
I remember watching the Kitzbühel races back in the 70's when every other racer crashed. It wasn't the groomed "freeway" slopes that it is today. However the skis have developed so the overall speed is higher, especially in the turns. Things change fast and the agility has improved.
@@Underhills grooming techniques have got better and so has training and they even have safer fencing. I remember seeing those old races too. I remember Klammer and his crazy runs plus the perfect Stenmark turns. That was more late 70’s and 80’s. In high school around 1975 I liked Wayne Wong. Old names from the past.
@@Underhills the newer ski are much easier to ski on. They have a different skis for every imaginable ski condition. When I travel I just bring my ski boots and I rent the demo high end up all mountains. No more will you see 210 or even 100 lengths in a ski. Maybe in a World Cup downhill .

I was there 3 years ago with our company. We had the VIP access tickets and lived in the 2 best Chalets. We spent about 25k per person during the weekend. We had brilliant weather and great snow conditions. It was AMAZING.
It's about time the women were to be competing on the most challenging of downhill slopes in the world. The Streif at Kitzbühel is the most challenging race and Lauberhorn race in Wengen is the most demanding. We all know women are good enough so let's have some equality.
forbiddencrisis no they are not. It is simple. I am not saying they suck, it is just that they do not have the same muscle mass as men and a lot of them would only hurt themselves.
The title should be "Alpine ski legend Aksel Lund Svindal takes Lindsey Vonn through an inside tour of skiing's legendary race, the Hahnenkamm 2020 in Kitzbuhel". ;)
Cary mullen aka: extra -- crazy Canuck holds the fastest official top speed (set years ago) on the Hahnenkamm at 97 miles per hour😳. around this time other racers were also getting around these high speeds and soon with ski equipment advances they would be going 100 + mph. so officials started slowing down the race courses by changing the way the speed control aka: gates were set by using the terrain to slow racers down before they reach the fastest sections of the course and the skis were being made with more sidecut for greater lateral turning quickness/radius which make the skis difficult to control in straight lines as they twitch sideways over every little terrain change at speed. true white knuckle racing😱
