How to safely remove your personal information from the internet

It's not a good feeling when you Google yourself and a bunch of personal information comes up. This may be information you don't want to be accessible to the public. So, how can you remove it? Consumer Reports says there are several steps you can take to help guard your identity.

Definitely. I would assume that once these stories are picked up by the AP everyone just runs the exact same story with a minor spin on it. Makes me wonder who's doing real news these days?

Isn’t this information collection buried in end user license agreements for any and all social media that you use? Is the only way to be successful in this to delete all social media and then do this?

recently searched people close to me who have no addresses or numbers on social media, but websites such as "free background checks" listed EVERYTHING about their life including "relatives" and "associates". it seems to be that most social media have an option where they lump together frequently talked to individuals or take personal information from other's profiles on social media (let's say if your hypothetical brother tagged you on Facebook & said your address, but you specifically never put anywhere online that he's your brother).
