This is one of my favorite grunge songs, I still sing it to myself once in a while. Chris Cornell's vocals are always memorable. Mr. Jones by Counting Crows isn't grunge but is another fantastic 90's song

A fun note. The lead guitarist in Soundgarden (Kim Thayil) is of South Asia/Indian decent. That was Thayil ripping the epic solo during the bridge of the song. He can play his ass off.
I always thought For an Indian kid to be deep into metal music was pretty daring, because Indian parents frown upon the musician/ artistic lifestyle.
Since you are pretty much broke for most of your career. Correct me if I am wrong.
Plus that was Thayil ripping the epic solo during the bridge of the song. He can play his ass off.

Thayil isn't a household name to most people, but among guitarists he's VERY well respected.

The video for a "Black hole sun" is confusing because it meant to be like video art. Music videos had been around for a decade or more and record labels ( who pay for the video) were more open to the video to being an extension of the musician and their expression. Hence you start getting trippy video like this, "Heart Shaped Box" by Nirvana, "Something inside of me" by Corn, and Michael Jackson, "Scream". Check them out,

That whole album is so great, it depends on what you like, they have more radio friendly stuff and also some more hard rock powerful stuff, but my favorite side of soundgarden will always be the doomy and dark part of Superunknown

Ash hitting all the huge grunge groups. My fav album from Soundgarden is”Badmotorfinger”. Check out Candlebox “Far Behind”, and Temple of the Dog “Hunger Strike” ( Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam) singing together. And yes, Weird Al does great spoof covers across many genres.

I think the video's strange effects are meant to represent the 'warping' of reality and the laws of physics that some think exists in or near black hole singularities. In science fiction and some not widely accepted physics theories black holes can even lead to other universes. In real life, most scientists suspect that long before you'd get to any 'alternate universe' if such existed you'd be a superheated cloud of quark/gluon plasma or worse but hey, art is art and it's nice to imagine 'what if'. Since the song is about someone who has had it up to here with the craziness, hypocrisy, stupidity and evil in the world and is kind of hoping for it to end, it makes sense to have this apocalyptic video, and since the agent ending the world is a black hole that justifies the creative camera and effects work.

Chris Cornell definitely had one of the best (if not the best) rock voices ever! The music video seems to depict the plastic fakeness of much of mainstream suburban America. Ironic that this is the song that cemented their mainstream popularity.

I was fortunate enough to see Soundgarden live in concert just months before they announced their break up back in 97. I remember I had a concert shirt from that night and (as guys tend to do) wore it until it practically disintegrated ☺️. I really think Cornell had one of the all time great rock voices. If you haven’t already, check out “ Hunger Strike” a duet he did with Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam with a group called Temple of the Dog. Also one of my favorite songs he did as a solo artist is “ Sweet Sun Shower” a beautiful little song. I also recommend “ Like a Stone” a song he performed as a member of the band Audioslave, the lyrics for that one hit hard even more now that he’s passed on. If you just want some classic Soungarden uptempo hard alt rock you have to listen to “ Spoonman” and “Outshined”. Loving 🥰 your channel 🤗, you had me as soon as you uploaded an Audrey Hepburn movie.🤗🥰🤗. But I’m liking it even more now 😊👍🏽.

Great reaction. So glad you did this. If you want to hear Chris Cornell rip it. Check out, "Hunger Strike". Both are amazing songs.
It so hard to take you into the mind state of grunge/ alt rock back then.
Grunge rock is more like melodic metal music, and Soundgarden and Pearl Jam were the best at it. You have to understand all these bands, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, had been around for a decade making fringe metal music, aka The Seattle sound. And we're ignored by the music industry because they were not willing to go the glam rock route like Poison or Guns and Roses.
When kids in the 90's, rejected glam rock with Nirvana and Soundgarden. They were looking for awesome music with a stripped down look.

90's grunge rock has a lot of unintelligible lyrics. Weird Al Yankovic even did a parody of Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit about how no one can understand them called Smells Like Nirvana.
Soundgarden was an amazing band, up there with icons of the movement like Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, and Nirvana. Spoonman is another great song of theirs. RIP to Chris Cornell and his beautiful rasping voice.

The mood and style of early 90s rock was depression and alienation. "black hole sun come and wash away the rain" -- the mood and tone and video, all suggested to me complete nihilism. The hippies hadn't fixed the world with love and the punks hadn't fixed the world with rebellion -- so the youth expressed the sense of powerlessness and pointlessness of even trying. (Nirvana most prominently, I think)

This song has no meaning no matter what anyone says. It's a stream of consciousness that has clever bits strung together. John Lennon kind of pioneered that style years earlier.

These are "X'er lyrics" that make fun, without laughing, of all the hollow self-important blabbering of Boomer culture that dominated the X'er childhoods. We X'ers were considered to be wastes of space by Boomers and most of us never felt compelled to respond to that accusation other than by either ignoring it or going "Sure, whatever". Grunge was the last expression of that feeling. At least... that's how I always looked at it.

To get any American music, it is from a deeply rooted knowledge of the Bible. Took me a minute, but this seems to be about when God does the final purge of the earth by fire. If any read the bible from beginning to end, it is amazing. This fellow no doubt has a bible knowledge. God purge the all humans but 8, by flooding it with a downpour if rain for 40 days and nights. The rainbow is His promise not to flood the earth again. But after providing a way of escape from sin and its affects, He promised He will purge all traces of human accomplishments by burning the whole earth with fire, purifying it. Black hole sun wash away the rain.
