    They are both great but the Big Sky just has a brighter sheen to it that is somewhat artificial, and the Eventide has a bit more warmth and natural movement in it.

    Great demo! I would just say don't add any vibrato to what you are playing when you are testing out the modulation. That way we can hear exactly how the modulation sounds. Thanks for the comparison videos!

    Both pedals sound luscious, but the Eventide unit is more functional, with 100 presets, a complete EQ section on-board, and better connectivity, to name three things. I'd go with the Eventide unit.

    From an honest perspective, coming from someone who doesn't own either, they both seem equal for "quality". It's not a question of better or worse, but more rather preferable or not. In a perfect world, I'd have both.

    I love your demos. One comment though, especially when showing effects with modulation is... try to minimize tremolo arm usage. It's hard to get a sense of things on youtube anyway, but when there are other factors it can make it harder. Just thought I would mention it. Thanks again for your comprehensive demos!

    Nice demo! I've owned both these pedals, but not at the same time (for obvious reasons) so was interested to hear them side-by-side. They are both undeniably awesome pedals to which little else seems to come close. However, I sold my Space and have since bought the BigSky - I have to say that there's so little in it, but I find the BigSky just that little bit less intimidating in terms of usability. That said, your demo makes me slightly nostalgic for the Space! (And yes, as has been noted by others here, the 'Blackhole' preset on the Space is outrageous! Although 'Nimbus' on the BigSky kinda makes up for it!). Thanks for posting :)

      Fair enough dude. I got the Eventide and have never looked back! Not having used the Strymon, I can't say too much about it, but I can tell you that every mode on the Eventide is useful (for me at least, as someone who makes deeply spaced out ambient)

    Too "digital" seems to be a common description for Eventide pedals compared to Strymon. That "digital" sound is a much better representation of the original guitar tone than any analog pedal could ever reproduce. Listen to his dry signal, it's bright and crispy like a typical Strat and AC30. When the Eventide is engaged that sound is still there. Strymon pedals color the tone and tend to smooth it out. Don't mistake a desirable coloring effect for a true, original guitar signal. Eventide does true representation, Strymon does not.

    • @Astralwurksdk
      @Astralwurksdk 8 лет назад +14

      I disagree. You can definitely adjust the Strymon to give an accurate uncolored tone

      As far as I know the dry sound is analog in the bigsky (if Im wrong correct me) the reverb has a smoothed out effect though I agree but that happens in real world situations and with expensive rack reverbs too. I think they are alot closer in terms of sound quality then forum nuts will tell you. The space seems to retail higher but be cheaper second hand and then you also have the Empress.

    • @oscarestrella3512
      @oscarestrella3512 7 лет назад +3

      I totally agree, to me the Big Sky sounds a bit plastic, while the Eventide reproduces the dry signal a lot better.

    The Big Sky has more parameters to diddle with but I think on the last example, the Even Tide had a warmer sound. Don't know if that is s matter of dialing that sound in. Strymon reverb tails are far longer. I dunno, 6 of one, half a dozen of the other? Probably if you own one it's the best. But i do know Strymon has some wonderful effects no others have.

    Great demo man! Owning both of these, It's a tough call. Both are great for sure. Personally, I prefer the Strymon gear for my current rig. I couldn't quite get the Space to work as well in my effects loop as the Big Sky does. But probably just my own fault.

      The reverb type was changed.. obviously. You can hear it.
      The name of the reverb was not changed. You can change that after while saving the preset.
      So the whole time, "Hall" was just the name of the 1st reverb, despite him changing the type of reverb.

    I seem to like the Strymon more. Without looking at the screen, I know which is which. Why? I hear the nuances of the strings more separated from the reverb, versus the Eventide which the strings sound more glued to the reverb and not as defined. In a mix, nobody could tell them apart, but isolated, the Strymon sounds less digital to my ears. The Eventide is the technologically superior pedal (and pricier), but it has that VST plugin sound to my brain. I can't put my finger on it!

  • @Randallkoller
    @Randallkoller 4 года назад

    The Eventide sounds less grainy and that's the clencher even though the Big Sky is easier to use, the Eventide has line live I/O so it can go in and out of an interface or mixer another clencher!

  • @arrangearrange
    @arrangearrange 8 лет назад +4

    These are completely different styles of reverb pedal. The space is more digital and the blue sky is more lush. Strymon gives you strong choice without giving you unmusical sounding choices for the most part. The space is an effort to cram a lot of a rack style effect into a stomp box, so you'll spend a lot of time dialing things in, but not so with the strymon. The basic reverb sounds are better on the strymon, IMO, but these pedals aren't about the basics.

    Big Sky has a unique analogue sounding upper midrange that sets them apart.
    Even the genius of presets is astounding.
    For me this translates into a "sonic vibe" and i love it....

  • @Kenman540
    @Kenman540 11 лет назад +6

    Even though I love dark tones, strymon seems to take the top end off way to dramatic, and got for a dead tone which is sad since they have some great algorithms going. Hence this is why I went back to tc gear.

  • @RalphKramden-q4t
    @RalphKramden-q4t 4 года назад +3

    I went Strymon first. Liked the idea of it, and there's so much hype about them. But in person in the room, it really turned me off because it sounds very digital and very cold. Let's say to me nice, it sounds too ideal and "perfect". I sent it back within days.Later I discovered the Eventide H9. Got a max and checked it out. OMG, that's the maker for me. In practice I think Eventide is better and they certainly have the long history and accomplishments. I'd wager Strymon has better customer service, but that's just a guess looking at their sites. Eventide has the professional sound and warmth though for this player.

  • @davekuhn4831

    The Eventide is cool for weird "effects" but the Strymon absolutely sounds more musical, lush and has a very unique character .. It has a vibe that the Space lacks for me. Particularly on the hall room and plate settings.

      I don't have the Big Sky but I do have the Strymon Mobius and Eventide Space and Eventide Timefactor. The Eventide pedals have a lot more midi functionality than the Strymon pedals do, so in that sense, the Eventide pedals are more well suited for complex midi setups, in studios, or for keyboard players. That said, the Strymon pedals have, pretty much, all of the midi capabilities most guitarists need. Not saying that Eventide pedals sound better though, I don't have the Big Sky or Timeline to compare...

    They both sound awesome man, wish I had both :)! I currently have an Eventide Space that I run in stereo with a Splawn Nitro and an AC30. Actually have a quick question for you. When running in stereo is there supposed to be some sound bleed between the amps thru the Space pedal? What I mean is for example when Im running just the Splawn and have the AC30 input turned off on my voodoo labs amp switcher I can hear some of the Splawn's tone bleeding out of the AC30's speakers'! It must be bleeding within the Space pedal. Is that normal when in stereo mode, and if not is there a solution? It always just kind of struck me as weird!

    • @UnleashTheBlob

      Had ju-06 running through a j-6 powered off and could hear the ju06 bleeding through the speakers faintly still didn’t think too much about it but if running some type of reverb pedal I could see how that could cause undesired effects.

  • @78awhite
    @78awhite 10 лет назад

    Perhaps I should have been more broad. Since the "trem bar" is actually introducing vibrato. Vibrato from the player and modulation in reverb can sound the same. In a demo, it's nice to hear the pedal more and the players vibrato less. That was my point. I just wanted to squash a "trem" vs. vibrato discussion. Hopefully. Again, great work on your demos.

    I own a Big Sky and love/hate it.I love the sounds but I hate that it has a puny 3db of volume cut available(the Space offers 20 db of cut I believe).This causes %100 wet ambient sounds to become way too loud( because long trails layer and add up to much more than 3db) .I let Strymon know and and a few software updates have come and gone,nothing :(
    I'd go for the Eventide but there are a few sounds on the Strymon that my songs depend on now..

    Commenting on the first settings room and plate. The Strymon goes longer yes, but the trails all sound the same. That same euphoric Strymon "thing" you either want or don't.
    The Space is a more "accurate" sound of a room and plate. When it starts getting longer, that's not a room or a plate! It's a hall or cathedral.

To be honest though it is hard to demo these pedals, (Still not an excuse). You cant really get an idea of how each sounds without trying it out in real life and taking time to customize presets. The factory presets you start out with on these pedals are just ok, and not many are worth keeping.

    It's hilarious reading comments and seeing all of the secret agents from other companies posing as average guitar players who seem to have WAY too much passion when talking down Strymon. I think the establishment boys are sweating a bit because of this new guy in town. I've noticed a lot of posts that look like "bots" claiming "Strymon takes too much top end off their tone which is why I went back to TC Electronics". On its own that isn't suspicious but I've seen that same exact post everywhere on Strymon videos.

      Dave Kuhn it’s even funnier to see “secret agents” from Styrmon make posts like yours. Strymon caters to people who think a higher price is = to a better product. In reality, Strymon is just a small company of amateurs who need to overcharge for their inferior products to stay afloat. Companies like Eventide, Roland, etc. can afford the best programmers available and provide a better product.

    Lots of staticky clicking in this presentation. What is that?

    Big Sky for me. The Space sounds overly digital, and seems in some cases to kill the natural sustain.

      @wackenthaljef 9 лет назад +3

      Yes,but you know its a question of tuning....If you tune the space correctly,i can tell you its sound great!! But i love Bigsky too!

      ***** Sooo !Thanks edguy! Its good to hear,im gonna buy a bigsky!!!...I recently bought a TC Alter ego x4...i give it back,when i heard it on the vids its seems good but at home,only the buttons around 12 are workin great,and only 6 preset on 14 are correct to use...better to put 100e more ...yes in europe a Bigsky is 490e!!!

      I got me the space, that one is better for my style and it saves better the original sound of my analog synths in the dry signal.

    I don't like the Strymon as much as the Eventide, based on this demo. The Strymon has this mid range thing going on and the reverb sounds .. I don't know, compressed.

    Hammok???sound? I prefer the eventide. But almost the same both. But the big sky for amp sounds better on treble, eventide looks better on keyboards for example, for me in all. Sorry big sky, we love you even that. "I'll send an s.o.s. to the world": ...---...

    cant cut more than 3db on the eventide - 100% reverbs get waay too loud. dumb

    Strymon sounds luscious and natural. Eventide sounds more sterile.

  • @cosmogang

    You are not good at navigating the Space, bro. It can get just as big as the bigsky on just about every setting if you know what you're doing. Smh

    • @marc0d0n
      @marc0d0n 11 лет назад +18

      No one's gonna fully know how to navigate any one pedal the first time they use it. That's the whole point of the demos, to get a first look.

      And this is how the Bigsky won the game for me. At the first look, you already know what you reverb tou need by just turning the knob and you see it.

    Eventide for shure 😊 better quality effects and original tone of guitar stay in mix.. Strymon is for people who not have good ears 😁 Strymon sound good but vs Eventide is raw.. and overpower sounding..

    u do it wrong .. the algorithm staying at Hall for the entire demo.. how can that be?? just wrong

      +Mohd Khairul He's just not changing the bank or preset that he's on. He's changing the type of reverb (hall, plate, room, etc.) but the name of the preset is Hall. I thought the same thing at first but I see where the confusion is

    Both pedals sound luscious, but the Eventide unit is more functional, with 100 presets, a complete EQ section on-board, and better connectivity, to name three things. I'd go with the Eventide unit.

      Only 100 presets haha BigSky has 300 ,BigSky is the ultimate reverberator pedal EVER,I mean EVER!!!!The sounds it produces are unmatched even with the most expensive studio reverb racks.Its just the standard in reverberators.
