I have a forerunner 45s and I have had it for about 18 months, for the first 6 months the battery life was amazing, lasting anywhere from 7-9 days on one charge, however since then it has been getting exponentially worse to the point where now it barely lasts 1-2 days however still takes about 1.5 hours to charge

Late, but THIS is what you call a product review. I wish others had 1/2 the content this review had. I have an antiquated 230, but it does all I want it too. But I've had this 45 in mind as I love screen + super legible type. I don't need music so this seems fine. Also have the instinct in mind, and maybe the 735 (which will likely be more than I need). I'll watch you reviews for that too. Thx !

I’m religiously running 4 times a week, all year round. And I still use a Garmin 45 in 2021.
All I need is elapsed time, pace, distance and sync to Strava. I can’t justify buying another Garmin like the 945 or Fenix6.
99% of the times I run with a phone so if I ever need maps or contactless payment I use my phone. If you’re from the UK the MapFinder app has some fantastic OS maps which save to your phone so you don’t even need a signal to see them.
I recently noticed the 745 has a running track mode. But I’ve never had a problem on a running track with the 45, it seems accurate enough and still records running track segments. If you’re training for distance and there’s any doubt about the start and finish point, just do an extra lap and that’ll ensure you’ve done your 5k or 10k around the track.
For treadmills I bought a Garmin foot pod a which clips onto my running shoe laces, this enables the 45 to record my treadmill run and sync it, just like I’ve done a normal run, it just doesn’t show a map on Strava

I wish more manufacturers would offer/and retain a basic model.
    I don't want bells and whistles ...
I don't need schedules, I don't need a watch to tell me how much 'body battery' I have ...
    I just need -
    reliable/accurate GPS
    HRM
    Chronograph with splits function.
Decent, large clear digits that can be read on the hoof.
    That's it!
    No pointless marketing gizmos!
Better yet, keep making the same product, maybe with evolving improvements,
but leave the body design alone, so that people can still buy straps, 5 years down the line.

It is a great gps watch for the money BUT the vibration/alerts for interval training are "weak"/"low volume". This means you can setup a structured workout but you cannot hear or feel the alerts of the different intervals. So if you want to do a structured workout you need to carry an smartphone and headset to get the instructions/alerts. There is no way to increase the volume of the beeps or intensity of the vibration. If I knew this beforehand I would have bought a different watch.

I have one simple question, in your video is the backlight on all the time? I don't find the 'always on' face is readable unless I also use the backlight. There's not enough contrast.
Have set it to trigger backlight on gesture as a solution but wondered if there is another deep setting I can use to increase readability of the screen without using the backlight?

Thanks for the work, but I stopped after 1:52 because it was already clear to me that the device was way too complicated for me to enjoy. And as it's the bottom of the range, that rules out every other Garmin too. Who needs all that stuff when they're running? Rhetorical.

Complicated how? If you don't like the way you control it through the 5 buttons then Vivoactive 3 might be a good choice for you (it has a tochscreen which is more intuitive), it even costs the same while having some extra features like Garmin Pay, just because it's an older model.

I recently bought a FR45 and I'm not very happy with it. Optical heart rate measurement is practically useless, even at rest most of the time it is completely off ( e.g shows 76 instead of 45 for long periods). I would say that when it shows a somewhat correct value is the rare occasion. I only use it with a chest strap. As I expected GPS-based measurement is pretty inaccurate - this is the property of the technology, not this particular watch. When used in the woods, the pace readings are again useless, they jump around so much - anyway, after 30+ years of running I can judge my pace pretty well. Distance measurements are 2-3 % off, but it's the same with other brands - practically a rough estimate. When running fairly straight and on mostly uncovered terrain, it can be within 0.7%, but that's rare. A very big flaw of the FR45 is that you cannot see average HR and lap HR during the run!!! And this is supposed to be a dedicated running watch??? Most of the time it takes at least a minute to find the satellites even tough I always start from the same location. I recently used it on the run segment of an Ironman. I put it on as I ran out of transition and started it - it gave me the "GPS ready" notification after 12 kms of running! When I had my phone with me paired with a wireless headphone the FR45 could not pair with the HR chest strap, so I had no heart rate data for that run. With these watches so wide spread I thought they were better. I guess we need more satellites (or use the military technology) and 10 more years to actually make them accurate. Big disappointment. I'd say these watches are good for some fitness use, but not for serious running. And since they all use similar technology I don't think the more expensive ones are any better.

    • @zoltanvarga6738
      @zoltanvarga6738 5 лет назад

@@richardlengyel146 I've never tried, but I know some people who use GPS watches for that (not sure if the FR45 is suggested for that, but it's waterproof). I'd think it's even less accurate in the water. However, more recently I got some pretty accurate measurements while running. If there's no coverage and you run in a fairly straight line, like along a river, it can be within 0.1%, which is good.

Nice video. However, no one does, in the video, check the accuracy of the results. For example - I run, look at the clock which shows how many heartbeats, and then I put my hand on the carotid artery, count and compare the result. Why doesn't anyone do that? This is how everything is received without discussion. What matters to me is whether I can trust the results that the watch shows me. I hope for an answer. Greeting

This question is really for anyone of a certain age who has this watch: I've got presbyopia (age-related long-sightedness), and looking to swap out my tiny Honor band (which I can't use without reading glasses anyway) for something else - hopefully a 'proper' running watch. I'd prefer an FR 245, but for cost reasons would be happy with the functionality of the 45, and in some respects actually prefer it - slimmer profile, lightness etc. However, I'm worried that the screen could be too small. Does anyone else out there have around a 1.5-2 dioptre prescription and use this watch? If so, is it easy to see the data while you're out running (and generally for telling the time etc)? We're in lockdown here at the moment, so trying one in the shop is out of the question :)

Sadly, the FR45 doesn't support any way to add sports on the Garmin Connect app. That's actually a surprisingly new feature just added to their brand new Fenix 7 and Instinct 2 watches in the past few weeks.

hi :) i would like to ask you what are the main differences between Forerunner 45 and 235? i am looking for a watch for half marathons and some easier trail runnings (10-15km with max. 500m elevation) and FR 45 and 235 has a very similar price tag (at least in my country) and i'm a bit stuck which is the better choice...thanks for helping me :)

Have you done a Vivoactive or Venu review? The Epix and Fenix are too expensive. I don't like this watch face or that it's on all the time. Seems kind of cheap. Sounds like that would really eat up the battery. I need 02, GPS for running which I do regularly, and heart rate. Sleep mode would be good too.

Hey Ray, great review. Do you think this will be a better choice than the Polar Vantage M? I'm mainly a semi-pro squash player, but I also do some run trainings once a week. What is bothering me, only in Polar I can choose squash as an activity and what I've heard from my collegues the calories burned are quite accurate. However some people are using Fenix 5 with chest strap + foot pod and they told me also with these extra gadgets the calories burned are quite accurate. What I like about the garmin is the smaller form factor and the Sp02
    thanks!
