Legacy of the Wizard. I probably spent 100’s of hours playing it. Basically an open world game, very cryptic, with not many secrets revealed by the instructions. I loved that game, would love to see a remake.

It became a group effort to make sure it written down correctly when it came time to let one of my brothers play.

Probably so. It had the misfortune of being sandwiched between the most iconic Mario ever (SMB 1) and maybe the best Mario ever (SMB 3). It also kinda wasn't a real Mario...just a reskinned version of a game called Doki Doki Panic. Great game still, IMO.

What do you mean not 100% Mario game? The game it's based on, Doki Doki Panic, was made by the same designer/developers (Miyamoto and team), which is why the platforming elements and characters control just like the other Mario games. It even has the POW block from the original arcade Mario Bros. When they converted it to Super Mario Bros. 2 for the US market, they spruced it up a bit and changed the characters to the Mario characters, but the game always had a Mario influence.

Oh man. The Karate Kid was a TERRIBLE game. It was brutally hard for 5 year old me and the ending was such a let down. I spent an entire summer trying to beat the game, and when I finally did I was so disappointed I never picked it up again. No cut-scene, no sense of resolution, just a floating Miyagi head telling you you're a karate master now! The monsoon stage and the hammer swing bonus stage still haunt my dreams. Getting bounced in a corner until I died was infuriating. I'm glad someone got some enjoyment out of it though. Definitely an unorthodox pick for underrated game list.

Thank you for a list of underrated NES games that isn't all ULTRA rare $500+ games. I feel like most top 10 NES game videos only show the really expensive games. "You have to play these!" they say. HOW??? I don't have the money for that!! I have most of these, but some, like the Karate Kid, I never picked up. And it's actually a reasonable price! Thanks!

marble madness and anticipation brought back SO many memories! wow.. I was just talking to my brother about nes games that we both remember playing. Boy& his blob.. T &C, ect. but there's one game that sticks in my mind and only remember 1 level of it. The bad guys jumped like frogs and they had the letter J on the front of them, i think there was a coin involved? I'm not 100% the level was set with pyramids in the background, i though it was trojan or karlov but the levels dont look the same. Does this ring a bell to anyone?

Agree. However I loved the FIRST Bases Loaded by Jaleco too. I could pitch a perfect game through 7 innings with FOX on Philly every time. He had a pitch that if you did the right controller move, would result in a strike call every time and was unhittable through 7 until his arm tired. Generally this meant a win anyway. Also, you can CRACK the Bases Loaded code by taking the code from two games played, then counting the spaces between each letter to get your next one. EXAMPLE: If "A" is in the 1st code, and "E" is in the same position in the 2nd code, the next code it would be "I" - I cracked this at 13 and ended up getting a Philly team that had more wins than games played.

Destiny of an Emperor, Cobra Triangle, Crystalis, Conquest of the Crystal Palace, Guardian Legend, Journey to Silius, Legendary Wings, Shatter Hand, Power Blade, Metal Storm and S.C.A.T. aka Action in New York....these are some underrated gems that come to my mind. The games he list aren't terrible, but they are more of guilty pleasures, American Gladiators is probably one I like the most out of these. I don't know if that's a good sign or bad, but to each his own. I own pretty much every NES game, with the exception of 15-20 that I haven't been able to get a good price on, so i've been playing them all since childhood, so I do have some experience. The LJN thing though....it's just most games are subpar, but hands down my favorite LJN game is Spider Man Maximum Carnage on SNES. Also, good call on Batman in honorable mentions, it should be a top 20 game of all time.

Actually sadly LJN gets the bad rep, but all they were the distribution company. They didn't actually make or develop the game. Atlus actually developed Friday the 13th and Karate Kid but they were distributed by LJN. Which Atlus has gone on to make some classic titles.
Overall its a common misrepresentation that LJN made all these "terrible games" when in reality they just have poor choice in what games to publish.

Baseball Simulator.1.000 was way underrated. You could play a 162 game season with custom names and it would track your stats. If your lead in the division was too big your pitchers would start the game fatigued. Really ahead of it's time. My brother and I completed many seasons of this game.

  • @Hiushisan

2 games that I hear mainly negative stuff about but I love are Silver Surfer and Fester's Quest,
Silver Surfer is an extremely challenging Gradius-style space shooter with great music and a very pleasant stage select feature, giving a customizable path through the game depending on which levels are easier/harder for you.
Fester's Quest is a very odd overhead shooter game starring Uncle fester from The Addams Family trying to save Gomez Addams from aliens. The music sounds like it's from Mega Man, and some of the gun powerups are annoying to use in tight quarters, but I completed the game and had a blast.

These are all really underrated games. I always enjoyed magic kingdom and othello for the NES. Also Goonies 2 was originally released in the arcade. My local arcade when I was young had that placed right next to MK1 and MK2. And these games on your list need a proper remake on modern consoles. Remember the secret to Miyagi-Do? The spinning drum? Remember how Daniel beats chozen by countering left and right? Well same principle applies to that swinging spike thing.
If the spike is coming to your left, just before it gets to you, you hit right (towards the spike) and as it passes you hit left.
The game tries to recreate the rotation of the hips
And as it passes you, you do the opposite. Left then right as the spike passes you.
