    A great and wondrous sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head. She was pregnant and cried out in pain as she was about to give birth.
    The Buchanites were a Christian Sect led by the charismatic Elspeth Buchan in the late 18th and early 19th Century Scotland. Elspeth believed herself to be the Woman Clothed in Sun from Revelation, and persuaded some 60 or so folk in her time that this was true. These people joined her in a commune first located in Cample, Thornhill and then they went on to found the Galloway village of Crocketford.
    This is a supercut of my 6 part series on the Buchanites.

    Cardinal Stewart, Charlie’s little brother, must have been particularly lamenting not being able to send the inquisition after them.

      She had controversial views for sure. You have to wonder if she would have gotten up to as much mischief today since she could have become a minister in the Kirk. It could have saved her from becoming so unorthodox.

    The details, especially about the coffin and corpse, are fascinating. That said, the "heresies" are pretty much standard issue. I was hoping for something more original. The notion that those saved by Christ become incapable of or free from sin goes right back to the early days of the religion. I wonder if Elspeth heard the idea, or if she derived it on her own. I'm not familiar with Christianity, maybe someone in the comments can point to some bits of text that would have led her there.
    Nicely told, thank you for the story.

    • @gallowayretold6124
      @gallowayretold6124  Месяц назад +4

      She has a lot of correspondence with a wide variety of ministers and theologians, and read widely herself. That said she also based a lot of her ideas around visions she had as a child, so no doubt a lot of her ideas were pretty standard.
      Still fascinating and ultimately, pretty weird as a story!
      Glad you enjoyed it.

      It seems there was something going on in Elspeth's time, as there was the leader of the Shakers and an English woman who also claimed to be The Woman Clothed in Sun. Its fascinating. I only focus on Elspeth, because she lived in Galloway, but they are intriguing women too.
