    Thanks so much for this video. It was all the information I wanted.
    I have the BenQ TK850i 4K and was eyeing this one, both because of the long-lasting LED, but also for the great contrast ratio on this model.
    How are the black levels? Did they wow you? You have no doubt seen home projectors with really great black levels, which can provide some wow factor? Based on that experience, how would you rate this one?

    • @BuildMontage
      @BuildMontage  11 месяцев назад +5

      I think they were great. I have a JVC in my main room so it's always tough to compare it to that as the black levels on JVC are unrivaled, but also triple the price of this projector - so what I love about BENQ is the ability to calibrate it, and fine tune so many aspects of the image with a sensor. If I couldnt have afforded the JVC I would certainly have gone this route.

    Hey Tony! Thank you for the great video! Been waiting on a dedicated review to hit RUclips for a couple weeks now. I have the HT3550 and was looking to upgrade to the LS11000/12000 before hearing about this Ht4550. Can you comment on the black levels of this projector in comparison to that of the 3550 and LS series Epsons if you have had enough experience with those? Both provide a really signifcant brightness upgrade to my HT3550, which is my main goal, but if the blacks on the LS/UB Epsons still are night and day from BenQ, i'd go that direction.

    • @BuildMontage
      @BuildMontage  11 месяцев назад +4

      Thats a tough one. I have experience with the LS12000 range of projectors. This one is right up there but the LS12000 is definitely brighter. I think with calibration the HT4550i could match it, possibly even beat it in terms of a cinematic image, but it will depend on what you are going after. The LS12000B is also a lot more expensive. I havent had a chance to look at a HT3550 so I couldnt tell you there unfortunately. I try not to do comparison videos because it opens a huge can of worms - I try to review based on their own merits. Lets just say, if I was in the market right now, I'd probably pick this one over the LS12000 simply based on price and all the features you get with the Benq. Hope this helps!

    Hey, how does this compare to the AWOL 3000 UST? I noticed these traditional projectors are around the same price as UST ones and UST ones seem to have better specs. I'm curious if that's the case and why people would buy this over a UST?

    • @BuildMontage
      @BuildMontage  2 месяца назад

      I dont think comparing UST to long throw projectors is a fair comparison. It's like trying to compare a motorcycle with a car when they can cost the same price. It's a different use case. UST projectors solve problems such as cabling and placement issues. UST projectors tend to have their own issues such as center speaker placement - so you really need to identify your specific scenario and use case more than which one is "better".

      Hello! I think the black levels are decent. I didn't actually test it with my sensor. I'm spoilt because I have a JVC NP5 which has a 26K:1 measured contrast ratio - so anything else seems lacking - however, I found that without the color filter, this projector had decent brightness in the dark areas without washing out the completely dark areas. I found that this had a very "cinematic" feel to it.

      @BuildMontage That's good to hear, and thank you for getting back to me. I have a similar problem with the JVC RS2000. I sold it about 2 years ago, and now I'm getting back into projectors. I like the idea of the size of this so I can take it in and out of the basement easily. I also like the color accuracy but was a little concerned about blacks. I wasn't expecting anything close to the JVC or even my previous Epson 5030ub and 5040ub. I guess I was just hoping it was at least good for value. Great intro and b-roll. It seems like there is a lot of "bang for the buck" on this PJ. I'm happy to see that manufacturers are still spending money in developing new projectors. • @steppedon
      @steppedon Год назад +1

      Projectors inside of home theaters have been “on their way out” for 20 years now. Consumers just aren’t educated about them. Causing some brands to rebrand UST’s as “Laser TV” and bundling them with screens. Big box stores stick them on end caps at the back of the store because it’s easier to sell TVs. Yet here we are. They keep getting better and better and cheaper and cheaper.
      I think those other channels are wrong. We’re going to see TVs and Projectors converge long before 120” TVs require the same delivery service as a sofa.

      I would say the LS12000 is better because it's brighter and laser light source, however this one has better colours and colour accuracy, more cinematic. In a full dark room it would be difficult to say which one is better - the LS12000 also has electronic lens memory vs the manual controls. It's also more expensive. @@BuildMontage Thank you. I've had the LS12000 (currently using a Sony XW5000) briefly, but I've always loved the DLP image. I'm hoping the HT4550i will be a nice compromise of that cinematic commercial cinema feel with good "enough" blacks and contrast without spending a fortune.

    • @trendyprojectors4743
      @trendyprojectors4743 7 месяцев назад

      The Epson LS12000 has a native 4K resolution, while the BenQ HT4550i uses pixel shifting to achieve its 4K resolution. This means that the LS12000 will produce a slightly sharper image with finer details. The LS12000 also has a higher contrast ratio, which means that it will produce deeper blacks and brighter whites.

    Hi, I'm super curious, so I wonder if you cold answer my 2 home theater questions, even though I may never see that kind of sutup.
    (1) I hear about Kaleidescape movie players, and I wonder how does it do with selecting a movie's audio language? If I couldn't pick Japanese, it wouldn't be for me.
    (2) With an all out, super cool setup, like a 4K projector and everything, I wonder how the anime film "A Silent Voice" would look on the screen? It's an absolutely phenomenal film if you haven't seen it, and it seems like more TV and theater reviewers could include some really good anime in demos. But seriously, it's amazing and you'd be doing yourself a favor to see it, and maybe show off what it can look like!
    I'll include as a bonus "Call of the Night" for a demo! It's a shiny new anime that looks like the reason 4K exists! I wonder if it was mastered in 4K, because you could only get an image like this from the modern day! Thanks a lot!

    I'd go back to eshift for 4K in a heart beat to get better native contrast with lower ADL scenes. It's been measured at 900:1 and... that's actually pretty disappointing. If they could get 3,000+ lumens and 6000:1 contrast ratio or above, I'd fork over double the MSRP without a second thought.

    • @BuildMontage
      @BuildMontage  11 месяцев назад

      900:1? That seems awefully low. My JVC NP5 measured at 26000:1 during calibration. It certainly didn't seem to be suffering too much in the black level department when I tested it but I also didn't go through a rigorous calibration either. It was a loaner unit so it's gone back or i'd whip out my sensor. Do you have links to the 900:1 contrast results?

    • @ryankramer
      @ryankramer 11 месяцев назад

      @@BuildMontage NP5 contrast would be worlds better than most projectors in its price range. It’s a great projector for a screen around 120-130”. I think the Epson 12000 usually hovers around 3500-4000-ish ratio as a comparison.
      And for others reading this, with contrast, it’s logarithmic in how its perceived by the eye. A 10,000 to 1 contrast ratio would be roughly twice as good looking as say 1,000 to 1. (Very generally speaking, but you get the idea.)
      Better contrast ratios in lower light scenes also can make the projector SEEM brighter, as better blacks make the whites next to them pop more.

    • @BuildMontage
      @BuildMontage  11 месяцев назад +1

      @@ryankramer The NP5 I have tested as well as a NZ8 (two that I saw results of the calibration) and also better colour accuracy in the reds hitting the targets better - most likely due to bulb tech. It can be the silicon lottery with projectors, especially JVC, I've see horror stories and NX5 units beating out NX9s. The LS12000B I tested and calibrated was pulling around 6000:1 after calibration and correcting colour temp. Epsons are great units as well. I think I would still pick the Benq HT4550i over the Epson - the calibration options allow you to squeeze a lot out of it - I wish I'd had more time with it to see it reach it's full potential but the colour science was really nice.

      Pixel shifting is a common technique used in 4K projectors, and it can be a very effective way to achieve high resolution without the high cost of a native 4K projector. However, it is important to note that pixel shifting can sometimes introduce artifacts into the image, such as rainbows or motion blur.

I have the older ht3550 and despite BenQ claiming it is 2000 lumens my measured brightness was around 790 ANSI lumens, an 86% difference from the advertised brightness. Other people I've talked to have measured similar results. I wonder if the HT4550i is also grossly overstating its brightness which is why you found it fairly dim.

    • @BuildMontage

      I couldn’t measure that as it’s done in a lab and off the light source. All I can do is measure off the screen in foot lamberts or nits. I was getting around 80 nits in HDR. It’s not anything you can use to measure against BENQs specs as reflected light off a screen has too many factors: ambient light, distance from screen, screen material, etc.
