The Sims 1 was _genuinely_ designed as commentary on sociology and economics, plus a study on language and architecture. The original manual even came with recommended reading on those subjects
Oh the days when games came with thick manuals explaining how the game works with genuine depth.
Yee Will Wright has some interesting stuff to say about designing it - I think LGR did something on it I'll have to go look it up

@@chikkin.salad.sandwich There's a modder I'd like you to look into. He calls himself Sacrificial. You should check out his website. Not only are his mods phenomenal, they are some of the most update resistant mods I've ever seen. You haven't played Sims 4 until you've played it with the Zombie Apocalypse mod.
It really was a great simulation of the hedonistic treadmill.

Something about him having this sisyphean task of juuuust earning enough money to not die, but also still getting his dog his own bed amongst his very first belongings really melted my heart. He really said "Who needs windows, when my dog can cozy up in his own bed" and I respect that so much. :')

The Millennial Experience condensed into a single statement.
This might be a bit vain but I strongly relate to what Slagathor taught us. I was never particularly driven by money personnaly. I live in a small appartment, I have a small but good group of friends to talk to, I have a low paying job and yet... Life is good. I do not crave for anything further. Do I sometimes wonder if it would be better to have more space, or being in a relationship? Absolutely. But they are not a goal per se. If it happens it'll happen, else I can still enjoy my current, uneventful but unbothered life. Thanks AA
The apartment is still a dream for me right now ;-;
Being content with nothing means you have no aspirations. They aren't going to fall into your lap.

AA is one of the best storytellers on the gaming side of RUclips, possibly the best - which is why he works so well with games that are great tools for storytelling, like The Sims or Rimworld. Very few could take a scenario featuring a man pissing on his own lawn and make it this engrossing.
@ 2:53 OMG! This is my favorite song from The Sims! Bosim Nova ^_~ I miss these days of Maxis, especially their early games. The MANUALS for all the Maxis games were huge encyclopedias with so much detail and recommended reading. I could get a doctorate with all the stuff I learned from Maxis manuals alone. XDD
I used to read the manuals of the Sims 2 back to back! :D
A lot of the times I was forbidden to play, so I read the manuals instead, like a sad pathetic kid.. Maybe that's why I love playing games so much nowadays...

In “A Canticle for Leibowitz” one of the characters muses that the richer mankind makes the world, the more impatient and angry we become, because subconsciously we know we can never recreate Eden

I am abusive piece of shit that do not have any social skills to even get along with the only human being that accepted me into her life but what if we hada child to save the marriage? I am sure it will be okay. My uncle did this after their first children whom they didn't look after at all, my cousin grown by my grandparents, their marriage was falling apart since he was jobless for years. Both were abusive to their children, and his wife is the most annoying human I have ever met. She is lazy, screams all the time and thinks she is smart when she is dim af. They decided to make a second child to save the marriage and this stupid mf took fertility medicine because she couldnt get pregnant one year so she ended up with twins. Now they have three children ,an unhappy marriage and my uncle is still jobless so he decided to be a houseman.
I believe that was exactly the point
Especially the constant peeing their pants and crying
Never thought someone named Slagathor Ambiguous I would feel so relatable too.
4:10 a laughter of pure and absolute drea- I mean, happiness.
That laugh is perfect 😂😂😂
The music and aesthetic of this game immediately takes me to the happiest place. I can't even explain the good feelings I have thinking about the Sims 1, and I don't even think it's that good of a game. It just transports my mind to a place of sheer floating bliss, like a happier time which didn't even exist in the first place lmao.
Same. Nostalgic happiness just from the memories of the time when I played it more than the game itself.
Tbh I feel that way about sims 2, simpler times

Day 1:
“You noticed a sore throat growing worse as you worked, however, you can’t afford to take off work and even if you could, you can’t afford the deductible on your crappy health plan. You ignore it and hope it goes away on its own.”
Day 2:
“You feel increasingly worse and are running a fever. However you still must work. You take OTC medications and hope this is the worst of it.”
Day 3 and beyond:
“While barely keeping yourself conscious at work, you get up to use the bathroom and collapse onto the floor. A colleague calls an ambulance and you are rushed to the emergency room. You have a serious infection that requires IV antibiotics and a hospital stay of a week. You feel much better after, but then you see the bill. $80,000. You will never be able to pay it off even with financial assistance. You will likely be forced to declare bankruptcy, wiping out your attempt at building good credit. Furthermore, your boss is very unhappy that you were gone for a week. Any chance of a raise is now highly unlikely. You might even get fired because your employment is “at-will”. The good news is that the profits of the company you work for are up 20%. The executives received bonuses of at least a couple hundred thousand dollars each. Also a son of one of the executives, whose work is lackluster at best, received a promotion increasing his compensation by 30%. He also gets the same time off as the executives, an amount similar to what Europeans get by law.”

I love sims 1. I read about the inspiration behind the game annd will wright wanted to create a simulation about making houses with efficient fire escape routes because his own house caught fire. Every wonder why we had the "layout" score?
This episode tickled my inner child. I love the way you played this character in this. I always wanted the cheat codes to have mass wealth just to live a overly ridiculous boujee lifestyle and here you were purposefully struggling and strategically hustling your way to the top with hilarious commentary and smart ideas on how to get your money up being stingy and frugle as a scrounge mcduck could possibly be. 😂😂 Great run! Watching this at work, at my upwardly mobile job, making more than i ever have previously in my nearly 40 years of life, yet having nothing to show for it due to out of control inflation and idiotic politics/lack of foresight by leaders in the U.S., is both funny and way too realistic for me.
