Good analysis. I loved the win, but even more so, is the emergence of a really distinctive Irish style of play over the past few years. It's fluid, deceptive, very fast, concentrated at the point of breakdown, and very good to watch. We don't always win, but even when we lose, it's highly competitive, and a joy to watch.
So much vague nonsense passes for analysis these days. Intensity agression etc. Its great to listen to detail.
The straightforward (but not simple) way to stop Ireland is to cut off their supply of line out ball and don’t allow them dominance at the breakdown (interestingly England seem to have them most success here in the 6N).
Because Ireland’s attacking play has so many moving parts with 3,4 or 5 possible viable options to receive the ball. Trying to defend that after a wave of sub 3 second rucks becomes almost impossible. No other 6N can match this level of intricacy so it has to be stopped at source. The players have also been allowed to develop. Under Schmidt (great as he was) there’s no way Aki or Henshaw are throwing those offloads.
