Hi everyone, Just to answer a few questions to what we should have explained in the video.
We are cutting half of the top of our field because it’s been colonised with invasive Docs and Creeping thistle. We are repeatedly cutting them down low to kill them off.
We don’t have any intention of getting sheep and especially not goats. We don’t have the time or money to house and care for them. Our plan is to convert most of the field into a wildlife meadow with a pond. Most wildflowers happen to prefer low quality soil. Livestock would fertilise the field and destroy the habitat we want to create.
We do want part of the field to remain cut low for the Shwoo pen, the hens and to move around and work in freely. The ride on mower will make this easy to maintain in the future.
We hope this answers some of your questions, Gail & Alex xx

For a tree in that state a terracotta pot is not the best choice. Terracotta dries to drastically in the wind and sun and takes out all the water ( and nutrition in it) from the soil. So good pot for these babies

Hire or barter with a local farmer to come and brush hog your meadows. Research how to create meadows. Meadows are not just simply letting the field grow. You want to cultivate native non-invasive plants. I had a 12 acre property and made meadows to cut down on the mowing and to make environments for ground dwelling critters including birds. If you make paths you’d be creating lovely naturalized walkways.

Too bad you don't have any friends or neighbors with a riding mower or tractor to help get it cut where you could manage it. Plus not having the money to just "hire" someone else to do it, is out of the question as well. The apple tree's are looking awesome...what a deal! When you use your push mower on long thick grass, don't force it it cut the full width of the mower of that grass as it will struggle to cope with it. Mow just half width of the mower of the uncut grass and other half going over the already cut 'stripe. You should find that your mower will cope cutting much better under less heavier work load.

Wishing you a belated happy birthday Alex. The apple trees are growing well considering how bad a shape they were in health wise when they were planted. Gail, that scythe looks like good exercise for the abdominal muscles, but also very tiresome for beginners. I got sore just from watching you work. 😊

You have such a beautiful space, though I know how much effort and work it takes to keep up a house and yard. Especially such a large yard!

Glad you saved the apple trees. I would have soaked the roots in a bucket for a few hours but they look to be doing okay. Good plan to take off any fruit for now so they concentrate on growing too. Golden Delicious is partially self-fertile...If the red apple was Discovery, that is pollinated by Golden Delicious. So that's good! Lovely Ruby Tiger moth you found. As for the grass, maybe add yellow rattle which will reduce grass and allow wild flowers to emerge and have a lovely insect friendly meadow that needs a cut only once a year, and just have a small portion of lawn where you can sit/eat/read etc and easily mow. Don't work too hard!

When you said you we're cutting the grass, I thought that it is a very large field. You work very hard, you always do. And a happy birthday to Alex.

When the grass is high like that, just mow half a width instead of the full width of the mower. It will go a lot faster.

A small tractor with a mowing apparatus would knock out that field in no time. Hopefully you can get your riding mower fixed soon.

Bless your heart Alex. It's so hard for me to see you go through all that and I can't help. I would go through yard work hell just so you wouldn't have too including eating the grass for lunch.
