A safer way to pull out the switches without breaking them is to unscrew the whole mounting plate and push the plastic stem (bottom part of the switch housing) from beneath the PCB. This takes a little more effort but if you still want your switches in one piece then I suggest you try this method. I've had this keyboard for a week and pulling out the switches with just the switch puller is quite annoying. I figured I'd do this method when I thought of lubing the switches and it saved me a lot of time and sweat trying to pull out the switches from the top.
aparently the've made some changes to it now. The font appears to be changed compared to older models and iirc there is now double layers of foam inside to dampen any metallic sound. Small things like those.
I bought one today, It's between £55 - £60 ($75 - $80) now. I've been hearing left and right it was under $50. I wish it was :) But I've heard only amazing thing about it. Can't wait to receive it!

This might be the best video of the year. At first anyone who's read the Tecware box knows that swapping only works from Outemu to Outemu-- i found the pins are 1.2mm while gaterons are 1.57. I was going to search vids on filing down the contacts as mentioned by reddit when I came upon this first. U just squeezed them narrower! 11:29 That's brilliant! You got me all excitied with possibilities now, though i still have longevity concerns with this pcb b/c it seems 20% of amazon reviews mention failures within a month to 6 months.
I'm glad you found this helpful! As far as longevity is concerned the PCB has been fine for me after using the keyboard for a year. But I've only swapped the switches once so I don't know how long it'll hold up if you're frequently swapping switches.

@@fresharmo hm, that's not what I mean: the pcb has a pretty large cube which is the LED which would prevent most switches from sitting down on it unless there was a cutout like kailh boxes do

i would have taken the opportunity to lube the switches and mod the included stabs since you went through the trouble of taking all of those switches off. Good video anyway and thanks for showing how to fit gateron in this keyboard i have been looking for this info since early 2019
@@valerianmp Remove the switches for all the keys that have stabs, than with a tiny screw driver pull the tabs on each stab upwards. Tear them down, lube them, clip them and also bandaid mod.
My only mech keyboard experience is with a razer 2013 with cherry blues. I tried a membrane gaming keyboard that was surprisingly very linear and was enjoyable to type on. I was thinking of getting gateron reds, but would your recommend browns, reds, or yellows?
It’s all preference. But browns are very different from reds and yellows. They have a bumpy feeling similar to blues while reds and yellows are smooth and linear. I personally love yellows over reds. They’re better quality feeling.

just swapped my outemu browns for some akko jelly blacks, and literally broke so many of the brown switches when pulling them out. the tool they give sucks and my fingers are blistered and stinging after using it lol
You can use any type of switches. Just like what Andre did, you might need to flatten or even trim the switches as the pins are slightly longer as they are meant to be soldered on to PCBs. Just trim them or flatten them should you need to and you'll be good to go!
Loving my phantom elite that came with gateron yellow. I clipped and lubed the stabs, also replaced the keycaps with olivia clone and now fitted with the original shroud. Amazing kb for the price.
are the red switches really that bad? Because I ordered my tecware phantom 87 with reds but I might return it if they are that bad idk, but if they are that bad I might get the blue switches someone pls help
there is still a lot to with this keyboard to sound great, Lubing and sleeving the switches and that's what is did to my Gateron yellow and they sounded and felt insanely good and I also added tape mod and foam and even do the holy mod and cube the stabilizers it takes a lot of time but trust me you will not regret it.

I got it with the Brown switches (soldered) for only $49 with $5 off coupon. I am using it on my new Mac Mini M1 w/ bluetooth. I don't really game much and just wanted an alternative to the overpriced horrible feeling Apple Magic Keyboard. This keyboard is a dream as well. I really love these brown keys. (I have also used the red keys and like the linear feel.. I imagine your yellows are a dream). Anyways last night, I just bought the same keycap set you bought in this video; thanks for the link! Amazing the quality and aesthetics you can achieve with just $75 :) This RK987 absolutely destroys the Apple Magic Keyboard in quality and aesthetics. This keycap set perfectly matches the silver Mac Mini M1 case with the black apple logo on top of it. (I keep the backlighting turned off.. it's only a white light on the keyboard I got.. but I dont' really care for lighting nor the extra power consumption on bluetooth keyboard).
How were you able to sit the switches flush all the way into the keyboard? I have gateron milky yellow pros and I can’t fit them all the way in because the smd led that is on the pcb crashes against the closed bottom housing, as the otemu reds actually have an open space to accommodate this physical led. A lot of people seem to have this problem and to be honest I don’t know why. The switches I got also don’t have the cutout for the light but I was still able to smash them in and get them to fit. How old is your phantom?
@@KevDraws yes I forced them in but it wasn’t really hard which is why I think maybe tecware changed the design which makes the lights more intrusive. If you want, you can perhaps take a drill and drill out a hole for the leds with a small bit.
It wouldn’t be that large of an upgrade, but to make your keyboard look and feel nicer and can put one of the black shrouds on that the sell separately
I owned Tecware Phantom keyboard the stabilizer is terrible. i move away from tecware board. But i purchase a Keychron C2 board , and it's really good for the price.
My mod was putting a black tape piece on those LEDs above the arrow keys. And a foam inside which sure helps with the brown switch noises, but it barely helped with the metallic clang. Might try buying Gateron reds but I am planning to get a Keychron K4 96% keyboard instead of my TKL. I like having a numPad since I like to type. Funny enough I’m typing this on a phone.
I got gateron yellows for mine but they didn’t fit because the led white thing blocked the switch from going in. There won’t be a problem with the linked ones in the description right?

Tried replacing the original switches with gaterons, but the gaterons did not sit well although they are working fine. Its like they just got in half way...are you experiencing the same problem ?
On my keyboard, my blue switches were no where near as bad as these ones, but then again it is the first mechanical keyboard ive ever owned so I can't compare it to others
Another video I found said he put gaterons straight in and they were fine. He did a demo and said all 3 pins worked fine. But yours didnt work fine. Now im confused lol

I use this keyboard and it's amazing, I got the blue switches cause who wouldn't want that satisfying taps. for 46 dollars it's amazing, nice steel build, pretty heavy, and amazing lights.
It says on the tecware website that the switches that are only compatible with the PCB are outemu switches, so how did you manage to use gateron switches?
I currently have this keyboard and the switches currently are outemu blues, I want to switch them with either gateron yellows or gateron reds, but I'm afraid that when I buy them they will end up not being compatible with the PCB.

In my 3 years of modding keyboard time I have never broke any switches. Just be gentle with it and do it slowly.

Yea the keycaps aren’t shine through so I turned the rgb off. The rgb can still glow under the keys but I still left them off.

To be completely honest I have no clue how they fit due to the led but they somehow do lol.

Try forcing it a bit and if that doesn’t work drill out a hole in the switches to make room. But they should just fit like mine did.

I use this keyboard and it's amazing, I got the blue switches cause who wouldn't want that satisfying taps. for 46 dollars it's amazing, nice steel build, pretty heavy, and amazing lights.

It says on the tecware website that the switches that are only compatible with the PCB are outemu switches, so how did you manage to use gateron switches?
I currently have this keyboard and the switches currently are outemu blues, I want to switch them with either gateron yellows or gateron reds, but I'm afraid that when I buy them they will end up not being compatible with the PCB.
