This song isn’t about a younger girl and older guy. It came out in 1980. There is an interview with Benny Mardones before his death explaining how the song came about. It really is totally innocent.

I always knew he was, um, interesting looking. I was sixteen when this came out, and l was head over heels for an older man…but he would never have gone there. He was a gentleman. So was Benny, but the video is DIFFICULT. I think we were ALL way more innocent back then. We see things very differently through modern eyes and ears. My parents would have killed him😂…but it was such a fantasy love song, every girl l knew melted at it.

Video Sucks…old video but the BEST SONG EVER and such a talented guy. The song was actually about his neighbor girl that he paid to walk his dog because her dad left the whole family with nothing. He gave every kid in the family little chores so he could give them money. The 16 year old girl came in to walk Bennys dog before school after he and his Buddy had been up all night trying to write a song to a rhythm they already had which is the beginning. The buddy commented on the girl and Benny said “hey, she’s just 16 years old leave her alone” so I don’t know why they made this perv video. Benny Mardones could sing like NO OTHER!!! He passed a couple years ago with Parkinson’s but continued to raise money for different charities. He was a Patriot and a good man. He was 73 when he passed. 😢

😅😅 I’m so confused by how many people have a defensive take on this song or say that the video isn’t reflective of the song’s actual wholesome meaning 😂. As a little kid in the eighties I found it a little alarming because it implyed that one adult was being blocked by other adults from dating a teen but he’d kidnap her if he could. A million years later, I search the video and that’s more or less exactly the storyline. Except I pictured a waaaaay younger , cute, black dude about 20 years old. Not this coked out , terrifying, peeping Tom Ghoul! The worst part is how addictive the damn song is. The ghoul got pipes.
Ok This is a FANTASTIC song HOWEVER I do understand how that 1st damn line about 16yrs old throws people off BUT here is the REAL story about the song STRAIGHT from Benny Mardones in an interview he did with the Professor of Rock just a few months or years before he die. The song was based on a real life incident. Benny lived in an Apartment I think in Florida and his UPSTAIRS neighbors were going through some hard times because I think the Dad had left the family with no money.The girl is the upstairs neighbor who he decided to look after by employing her to walk his dog everyday before school so she could earn some pocket money. He never dated or had some relations with the girl.😀

Bennys interview he stated it was about his neighbor had 3 kids 2 girls one 17 one 16 and a 15 years old boy. There father abandoned the kids, up & left w/ a chorus line girl in N.Y after he came into some bigg money. They heard Benny was a famous musician and thought he could help. They came to his door in tbe bldg. They shared. Bennie & his band mate was up ALL NIGHT partying trying 2 put lyrics to that hook in the song and couldnt. When the kids knocked, the 16 year old girl (HEIDI) told Benny what happened. He hugged all 3 kids and...end part 1# see above to finish!
So he said after the fact. Seriously HE Wrote the song and participated in this creepy ass video. I would have bought the I was singing form the perspective of a 21 YO. But that whole story is for suckers that want to buy it. Won’t argue he has an amazing voice or it’s a great song

The song isn't about him dating the girl. The girl had a sister 17 and brother 13 and her 16 their dad ran off from the family with a 24 year old. The kids showed up at his door crying told him what happened he told them everything would be alright. He didn't know how he would make it better so Benny paid each kid to come by and do chores so they would have money for school and stuff. One night after working all night the 16 year old entered his apartment to walk his dog which was her chore she noticed Benny and his friends had been up all night when she was leaving the apartment his friend said something about her being pretty Benny replied hey man she is only 16 leave her alone.

They’re were three kids one he would pay to walk his dog and give them other jobs to help since father left them. I guess he felt really sorry for the daughter and wanted to take her away from her problems. Video could have been different
