  • Episode 202. This is a bold, heavily sherried scotch. It may be a bit divisive but it is rich, strong and worth considering. I wish it was a bit more affordable, but I certainly have been enjoying it. Have you tried this or any of their new line? #whiskyfabric#whiskytube#whiskyneighbour

    I recently finished a 1995 vintage Glenrothes. Very tasty. I started my job in 1995 and just retired after 25yr. I saved the bottle for ten years, just for my retirement. 😃

    Great review!
    I bought a bottle today and like you said: I was looking for a heavily sherry-influenced scotch - and I couldn't be more happy with what I've got.
    I would love to compare it to an Aberlour A'Bunadh. I remember loving the nose of A'Bunadh, but although it is bottled in cask strength, I always had the impression that it lacks of mouthfeel and that waters kills it much too fast for its strength. But I guess I have to revisit it.
    This Glenrothes on the other hand, just totally keeps what he promised to the nose. Yes, it's bold! And yes, it has some rougher edges and it gets a bit bitter in the finish, but I actually like that. Maybe it becomes a new favorite of mine...

    I'm not usually a great fan of heavy sherry, but anything I haven't tasted yet is worth a go... I have been staying away from Glenrothes for something like six years, now, and I guess it's because I had a dram of it following a Tomatin 15, which I liked a lot. In comparison, to my relatively inexperienced palate at the time, the Glenrothes just tasted like wine to me. This was before my Glenfarclas 15 AHA! moment...

And for a really, really good price! (at least where I live) If you love heavy sherry, I really think you should give that one a go... I'm glad I did.

    I loved this one and will be buying another shortly. If you're looking for rich sherry at fantastic prices, look out for the Glenallachie 15 and the Arran 18, both lovely and punching above their weight in the price/value ratio. Somehow in some markets (not mine in Winnipeg of course where our prices are awful and we rarely see new products on the shelves) those two are priced incredibly - real head scratchers!

    • @WhiskyNeighbour
      @WhiskyNeighbour  4 года назад

      Interesting. Both of those are above $100 around here, but I'll keep an eye out. Are they only ex-sherry or a portion of ex-sherry?

    • @tjross1313
      @tjross1313 4 года назад

      I'd definitely consider them both to be somewhat special and not just "everyday" $70ish bottles, keep in mind that I always have to compare prices to Manitoba prices where both of these would likely swing a $200+ price tag each. To the best of my knowledge they're both fully matured in first-fill sherry and both very rich!

    Regarding heavily sherried whiskies to try, I'm having a pretty hard time reaching past the Arran Sherry Cask "The Bodega." (I even prefer it to A'Bunadh right now.) Definitely pick one up if you ever see it up in your neck of the woods.

      Since I just bought and really enjoy the Glenrothes Whisky Maker's Cut and since I remember enjoying A'Bunadh very much, I actually bought a bottle of A'Bunadh and "the Bodega". So now I was able to do a blind tasting with all 3 of them (I added a little bit of water to A'Bunadh and Bodega to balance the difference in percentage a bit)... The A'Bunadh was easy to recognize. I guess you never forget your loved ones... with the other 2: I had no clue which one's which. But since I _clearly_ liked one of them much better than the other, I thought it has to be the Glenrothes, because I had it 2 days ago and enjoyed it so much. But I was wrong: It was the Bodega! Wow! What a nice whisky this is! Directly compared to it, the Glenrothes Whisky Maker's Cut didn't had a chance.... Thank you so much for recommending it here in the comment section. It truly is amazing.

    Hey Jon, would you consider this a “sherry bomb”? It seems like one! Right now I’m enjoying a speyside as well, the singleton of dufftown 12 year old. It may be a little simple for some, but it’s very friendly, fruity and creamy. It has some Pedro ximenez casks, and I like what they are bringing to the table. Cheers!
