One thing you didn't mention about GW2 is that gems, the currency for the cash shop can be purchased with in game gold as well. There is currently another channel doing a 0 to hero run to acquire all the gear even stuff in the cash shop and only spending in game gold.

You're right! Thank you for mentioning that. I think I was going to mention this at some point but didn't end up including it in the final video.
Admittedly, the conversion rate for gold to gems is pretty bad and with all of the other things you'd want to spend gold on in GW2, it probably isn't worth it for the vast majority of players.

thats not even hard, literally every1 with a brain isnt swiping $$$ in gw2, since getting gold isnt an issue.

@@TheActualMoon That couldn't be further from the truth. GW2 has a variety of methods to make considerable gold per hour which suit a myriad of different type of players, the conversion rate of in-game gold to store gems might not look good to newer players as it feels unfair or "not worth it" but that also is not true, the price fluctuates depending on how many people are exchanging currencies and surprisingly it is worse to exchange real money for gems to exchange those for in-game gold and that was done on purpose. The system is ingenious as it filters out more gold from the market rather than injecting the market with more gold keeping the game's economy from collapsing unlike other mmos, because it keeps old content that was released some 10 years ago relevant giving players in-turn more incentive to do that content even if it is old. Lastly, yes there are pretty cool cosmetic items in the store along side huge quality of life items while, unfortunate it is still not the worst thing out there, the game rewards you with pretty cool cosmetic items for completing content, challenges and collections, not to mention you can choose and match pieces from different sets of armor and even change the color of said armor to your liking through the dye system helping you achieve a cool and unique look for your character, some of the coolest looking gear is obtained through gameplay related collections not to mention the coveted legendary armors and weapons which are obtained entirely through gameplay related activities which provide great cosmetic value and quality of life without impacting the game, preventing players from being pressured into getting them as a gameplay necessity which is great for the average player as they can go about it at their own pace.

Solid video. 50c per hour is a fine expense for me to enjoy a game. I'd rather not have a sub or buy in. I'll pay you if it's good. 50-120 inital till 200-250 hours after that I'll spend up to 1k till 2k hrs and so on. Usually after 1-2k there's barely anything to buy and I can coast the rest of the way spending the ocassional 100 and be massively ahead value wise.

I think breaking down the amount of money you spend in video games to dollars spent per hour is a great way to evaluate the real entertainment value of games, spot on!
There are tons of hobbies out there that cost way more than paying for an MMO, even though most people might not see it that way.
Some of my favorite games cost me around $20 as a one time purchase and I've spent hundreds of hours playing them!

For subscription model games, the developers (or at least the executives that manage them) are very motivated to time-gate and otherwise draw out content to maximize the time you are subscribed to the game. This can definitely impact the gameplay experience negatively.

This is definitely true, something I'm actually experiencing firsthand with the new world of warcraft expansion right now.
Of course, this can cause content drought in the worst cases, but time-gating content does also stop people from simply speedrunning and entire expansion or content phase. It up to the community to decide whether or not content is delivered at an acceptable pace.

So I agree 100% with nearly everything but remember check what your spending your money on. Bdo 10$ is worth 1-2 hours of end game grinding. So unless you want to spend 1,000$ to skip 200 hours of gameplay tops. It's never worth it. Also yes I gave gw2 600$ between expansion and cash shops but I also been playing since beta still worth it in my opinion 10 years of content 60$ a year avg ain't bad, compared to wow where expansion plus time I spent nearly 200 a year ish for 3 years of now dead content.

You make some good points, I don't think spending a lot of money on these games is necessarily a bad thing. The most important thing to me is knowing exactly how much you can expect to spend and how the things you can buy with real money affect the gameplay.
