There is an important omission here that will put empathetic people at risk, that is the existence of the psychopath, the sociopath, the asocial personality disorder people. These types prey on anothers ability to be empathetic. When asking a child to try to understand another to develop empathy it should also be taught that some people will manipulate the empathy and victimize or else these same children who you are hoping to create empathy in will become a predators prey. Not enough is taught about pyschopaths and popular culture is encouraging this personality so there are more out there now. Beware of stepping out of reality with overdone altruism. Have true effectiveness with balance. And above all, don't put children at risk by only addressing one aspect of our human nature; you owe it to them to present the other side or else you will hurt them and society when your objective is to help. Be realistic, balanced, address the fact that those who prey on empathetic people exist also and Boundaries are just as important as empathy. Don't address empathy without boundaries or you will victimize in today's society.

I'm here cause I have a really good job but the only issue I have is showing more empathy. Now it's gonna be a little hard for me to express it in my face cause I always had a neutral face position for many years.. one look at me, and it may look like that I'm not interested... but I do care.. and I am listening.. and am here to help..
This is really great information which I will try to apply more often, but in the six years since this presentation the societal attempt to increase empathy has gone off the rails, sadly. On social media you can see every day people empathizing with a group or cause and ripping to shreds those who disagree - instead of trying to connect by empathizing with those people as well.

Empathy is virtually dead in the US. They see violence and brutality as a source of strength, while compassion and kindness is seen as a source of weakness to be exploited.
