@@Brother_-sh6eh and that would cause a large increase on taxes. More taxes means people have less money to buy the things they need. Remember "free" stuff is never free. Tax payers including me and you have to pay for it. It comes out of people's paychecks.
Whatever may be going at home, if the parents are hardworking or just using assistance and don’t try to work, the kids shouldn’t have to pay. They should always be fed no matter what because they are innocent .
I’m in tears. My mama is a single mom and for most of my childhood she struggled to give me the best that she could. Bless her because even though she struggled with jobs and school to get a degree she always made sure I was happy. I had reduced lunch at school. Sometimes I’d end up unable to pay for lunch and the only thing they had to offer me was PB&J sandwiches which I’m allergic to. I’d still take them but I’d trade it for food from my friends. I’m glad these kids have a better system
I don’t understand how parents could ever let their kid go hungry. I remember when both my parents lost their jobs at one point when the recession hit hard and my mom became super resourceful to feed me. I mean there were times the fridge was empty with just bread and baloney but it was still food.
I mean I have a hard time believing that. Churches offer food to the needy all the time. There is welfare and food banks which also help. Even if none of those things existed there are cheap foods you can eat. I am in college my food budget is 30 dollars for a month and I make it work. I bought a 20LB bag of white rice that has been feeding me for months. The only other things I buy are canned vegetables when they are on sale for $0.49 a can with a coupon I get them for about 37 cents each. They don't go bad and last. For protein, I eat eggs or some form of bean. Is it a appealing diet. No not at all but it feeds me. If I feel like splurging I buy milk but its a luxury item for me.
Yes, there is food out there. However, food pantries do have limits on how much and how often you can use them. A lot of people are not aware of this. Also, much of the food is expired. I have had situations where the shelf stable milk was bad when I got it. Or food goes bad within a few days and the next pantry date is not for another month. In general, I think people are wasteful and sadly food pantries are abused. I personally try not to use food pantries unless absolutely necessary because there are those out there worse then me. The is another way, but not sure what the answer is.
I remember getting my lunch taken away in elementary school because I owed too much to the school. They gave me a small pack of goldfish graham crackers instead (not even a cheese sandwich). I remember being so hungry, embarrassed, & sad because the lunch lady at the register acted like it was my fault even though I was a young kid.
This is very important and helpful to needy families across the country and this types of food programs are needed throughout the entire year for families.
No you must be kidding teachers make a lot of money are you serious what school district do you work for and not even just teacher's what about all the school taxes that we pay where is that all going that's all going in their pockets you got to be kidding
Like I said don't know where u live but out where i live they make money but again where's r taxes go should pay for lunches we pay high school taxes that's a lot of money
Generally depends on the county. Teachers where I live can make around 75k a year, but in poorer counties they make next to nothing something like 32k - 35k a year and that's after they've worked there awhile
‘Kids unable to pay their meal debt have sometimes been denied food, or had their hot meals thrown away in front of them-‘ CBS, you just said ‘kids unable to pay’, as if children were independent members of the workforce!! (😳…🥺)
Our school now serves breakfast, lunch and to-go dinner for children. It is all free for students who’s parents have low income. I’m proud of our school district because what they serve us is real food
When I was still teaching I saw two sides to this. Probably 65% of our kids were on free or reduced lunch and our cafeteria was actually pretty good. However, it was upsetting to see the kids take a tray, pick up one item like the chocolate milk, and dump the rest. Then there were the kids who were truly hungry and had parents that either would not or could not fill out the forms. The system was seriously flawed and I found myself buying lunch for kids on a regular basis.
I understand how some parents don't fill out that form. The form is probably a long process and if your a busy working single parent taking care of the kids then I imagine you probably don't have much time to fill it out.
I love these programs because I used to get my food taken away from me at lunch some days same with some of my friends because we couldn't afford it do to siblings get food money before us quite often or not having any at all at sometimes.
Man i remember getting out of class in elementary school to help out serve lunch’s to the younger kids. But I think it was for free lunches or for good behavior, don’t remember why exactly helped out the lunch ladies, but it was exciting to do so.
Angel S I can’t believe the lunches at schools in America all is warm and soft for easy digest and filled with sugar. Sandwiches are great alternatives here in Europe most northern country’s eat sandwiches for lunch. They have all sorts of things there’s probably more stuff to put on bread then there’s lunch combinations in America. Why would you pay a school for food for your child. Isn’t it normal to get it from the grocery store and let your kid take it. 1 bread of 20 slices costs 2 euros around 2.60 dollars I believe. Americans are so used to warm meals and a bunch of sugar.
I agree here! People do not need the latest, most updated or even a smartphone. I had a cracked phone for at least 3yrs, but it worked amazing. There is also the notion that manufacturers do not make things to last anymore. If they did, then money can be spent more efficiently.
Well when one looks at this video , you feel compassion and want to appreciate what good work the American schools are doing , BUT ! then you realize USA is the Richest FRIIKKIN country on the planet with a defense budget more than the next 10 countries combined ! You people shouldn't be having "feeding the poor kids" problem ! Whats the use of such a massive Economy and calling yourself the only true global superpower if 1 in 6 children are going hungry ( as per this video). I mean I can understand my own country India, we got miles to go, but this is not expected of you Americans !
You know despite all the flack that school lunches get for serving lunches that are cheap and artificial, and while that is a problem, we also need to recognize the fact that it's still food. And for some people, this is the only meal they're getting
I don't know where these people get their information from. In most schools if you don't have the money to pay for your lunch you get a cheese sandwich and you have to watch the lunch person throw out your food. In my entire 12 years of schooling not one student had to ever pay for their lunch ever and there are over 150,000 students in my city.
When I was living in NYC when I was a kid they were so desperate for parents to return the lunch applications even if you didn't qualify. They would even give you lunch detention just because your parents did not return the lunch application.
Revamp all schools... get rid of too many admins that get paid 100 thou or more a year and end up playing on their phones during lunch duty. Invest in classrooms that children have access to real usable skills and real food for students.
I still remember my high school was one of the few districts that didn't food shame. The only limitation they made for those debt was one lunch line was given access and they clarified that one but everyone got a hot lunch.
*03:30** - NEVER WILL THAT HAPPEN, BECAUSE THOSE SCHOOL MEALS FOR THE CHILDREN ARE SHOULDERED BY THEIR PARENTS AND NOT TOTALLY SUBSIDISED BY THE GOVERNMENT AND MANY CHILDREN GOT BULLIED BECAUSE THEY PARENTS ARE NOTHING TO PAY WITH THEIR CHILD'S SCHOOL LUNCH BILL.* *"THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS FREE MEAL".* 😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁
Just like the reporter said whoever can’t pay for lunches gets a cheese sandwich and one day it was PERFECT I didn’t have any money in my account so that exactly what I got and that day was grilled cheese sandwich day so I guess me and my mom backed the system lmao
I've had my lunch taken away from not paying my dept, and it was replaced with a cheese or pbj sandwich, but it was always embarrassing when everyone in the line could see.
As a person, if I was selected for a university president(average salary is $500,000 yr) I would probably either start a program to send boxes of groceries to households once a week or pay the lunch fees for students in all schools surrounding the university.
My school you either get crap, or a “swamp cooler burrito” we call it that cause it smells like a swamp cooler. I eat lunch maybe 2 days out of 5 days but I am very grateful and happy I do get food at home. But today the smell of the cafeteria was so terrible my friend and I just left. Imagine the kids, two meals for a week. That is crazy. The only free food we get is crap, this is how you’re feeding your future guys!! Swamp cooler burritos!! I live in New Mexico and the food is absolute crap. This has been a problem for YEARS.

Sad But I worked 33 years in the kitchen in school 23 years as a cook and I seen a lot of kids just to throw out the food the wheat food is no good. Even the cookies chocolate chip cookies were made with wheat and there’s some kids that are allergic to wheat can have everything wheat just doesn’t taste good what a shame so many kids go hungry but if they don’t like the food they will not eat it.
My lunch is so bad you can literally pick up the mash potatoes and you can throw them and hit the wall it doesn’t even break you have a better chance of killing someone with our mashed potatoes than you do with a sharp pencil
I remember we couldnt get free lunch because my dad the sole breadwinner made to much....but he had 9 kids and a wife to take care of...so to help him out me and my sister would babysit our neighbors kids for extra money...the boys would cut grass take out trash and shovel snow and other odd jobs to help the family...once we make money i told my dad to buy a lot that was next to our house so we can grow our own vegies ...with that we cooked our own food and feed the family.
We were spoiled near San Diego... Taco bell.. Pizza hut... Burger king... Were contracted and breakfast was free to every one... And my mom couldn't understand why I wanted to pay 1.50 for lunch
If a child is on the free lunch program, they should not be going hungry....at least not at school. In my district, if they want breakfast, they get whatever the entree is that day, fruit and a milk or juice. Lunch consists of an entree, 2 fruits, 2 vegetables and a milk. No cashier or line server is going to say anything to the child if they want more fruit and vegetables, because they know if the kid takes them, they are going to eat them. Having said that, the parents of full pay students should not be allowed to not pay their kids lunch account off when it gets in the negative. Most people who are not on the PTA or work for the schools do not realize that cafeterias have to pay their own way. They are not a part of the school budget. They are responsible for all the food purchases, utilities and salaries of their employees. They have to bring in money owed just like any other business.
It's really easy to prepare your kids lunch at home just do it the night before simple as that and give it to him before they go it's better than giving them lunch money and then they get bullied and then they lose their lunch money are always put a few extra dollars and their lunch box and a ziplock bag just in case they're still hungry
Growing up poor we had some hungry days....with me, my sister and brother we would snitch food, fruit was easy to get...at home you never opened the fridge to take something, my mother would, I will break you arm if you take something.....lunched at school she would wrap a sandwich in newspaper...so embarrassing...I had a friend and her mom always gave her a thermos of warm cocoa, she would give me the cup and she would drink from the thermos.
Most humans do not eat 3 meals a day. Most are lucky to eat once a day. Hard reality that every country should be ashamed of. At this point in time no human should go hungry.
I went to roseville high school in California our lunch choices were disgusting. Soggy chicken strips, with soggy french fries. Hamburger patties come from nasty water🤮.
when I was younger My parents had 5 kids in school lunch everyday is expensive. When I would go to get my lunch and not have money to pay when I was 7 the lunch lady would shame me and be rude. My grandparents would have to pay the money so that I would keep getting my hot lunch
Where i grew up there was no such thing as school lunch, and people just made sandwiches every morning to take to school/work. They are pretty cheap so in general there isn't any kind of money issue with bread plus cheese/peanut butter/jam.
its good to see that in this school district they are doing a good job and offering access to food. i don't love that they are eating while working which is not exactly a great thing to do. I mean you do it when you have to- but taking time to just rest and eat is necessary. but there should be more collaboration between schools and nonprofits across the united states. if there is a program that is working - why not do it everywhere? why must it be so hard to change this.
No child should go hungry. Period.

I had free lunch at school. And during the summer. Loved the peaches and plums..
God Bless these children!
I don’t understand how parents could ever let their kid go hungry. I remember when both my parents lost their jobs at one point when the recession hit hard and my mom became super resourceful to feed me. I mean there were times the fridge was empty with just bread and baloney but it was still food.
Dennis Pietrandrea It depends on your situation most of these kids parents have to choose between rent and food and most of the time it’s rent
Some kids dont even tell their parents
6:16 idk why but that was adorable
Poppy's Sad it really was I agree
I remember getting my lunch taken away in elementary school because I owed too much to the school. They gave me a small pack of goldfish graham crackers instead (not even a cheese sandwich). I remember being so hungry, embarrassed, & sad because the lunch lady at the register acted like it was my fault even though I was a young kid.
These student's are lucky to get all that food and more food in class.
♥️Our Kids Are Worth It♥️
The school lunch staff is so much nicer than my school. Never mind the are SOO much nicer than my lunch staff.
Supper? what a great idea why isn't this everywhere
Finally these dear children have been seen! Keep up the good work!
I REMEMBER THE FREE HOT LUNCH WHEN I WAS IN SCHOOL THE FOOD WAS THE BEST HOME-MADE WAS WHAT MADE HOT LUNCH TO ENJOY
It’s just so sad to me that people have to go through this. :(
This is very important and helpful to needy families across the country and this types of food programs are needed throughout the entire year for families.
When I was in school, everyone wanted the cheese sandwich, because it was the only thing the food department couldn’t f up.
No kid should ever starve without food! They have to grow
This is a wonderful program. I'm just thrilled ! I live in Columbus, Indiana,
all schools should have more free lunches and breakfast to help out mom and dads
Don't forget about food waste. At my school, I still see a lot of wasted food, from people who leave trash on the floor, even whole foods.
What about the cafeteria worker having to throw out the unused food I mean never been open?
I think if you're paying all these high school taxes the kids should eat for free where's all that money going all the teacher in the schools packets
Wtf teachers make nothing
35k a year starting you idiot, many get paid more than 80k per year
Generally depends on the county. Teachers where I live can make around 75k a year, but in poorer counties they make next to nothing something like 32k - 35k a year and that's after they've worked there awhile
It’s great that this is happening and working helping everyone x
jesus christ the school's cafeteria looks a lot better than mine...what is this?!
MelancholyRacoon a fake cafeteria lmao
The students are all white
woobwoobwoobwoobwoobwoobwoob zoidberg true
woobwoobwoobwoobwoobwoobwoob zoidberg nope you are wrong. 1:13 there's a black girl
Lol
‘Kids unable to pay their meal debt have sometimes been denied food, or had their hot meals thrown away in front of them-‘ CBS, you just said ‘kids unable to pay’, as if children were independent members of the workforce!! (😳…🥺)
Our kids deserve it. Now.....let's talk about the negligent parents.
@spirals 73 Some aren't but some are.
@@crucisnh and how do you know, do you know what their financial situation is like?
“So we can give our students the best” yea tell me about it
When i was in school in 1984 my breakfast was a coke and candy bar and lunch was fries
My mom made lunch for me for school
Man i remember getting out of class in elementary school to help out serve lunch’s to the younger kids. But I think it was for free lunches or for good behavior, don’t remember why exactly helped out the lunch ladies, but it was exciting to do so.
Yes too student
Love kids
But we also have unhealthy food given to children.
Why can't these huge company's just a least donate some money, they are already rich while kids are going hungry
funny thing. when you give poor people more food, they have even more poor people.
We didn't have money growing up, but my dad never allowed us to get free lunch. I still wonder all these years later why???
There are so many fantastic people in this country. 👍😎
Gosh. Where are kids going to get a healthy meal now that all the schools have been closed?
When you can afford a Phone but you can't afford a school lunch.
I agree here! People do not need the latest, most updated or even a smartphone. I had a cracked phone for at least 3yrs, but it worked amazing. There is also the notion that manufacturers do not make things to last anymore. If they did, then money can be spent more efficiently.
They don’t need a expensive phone but they do need a phone. Either way the way money is spent isn’t on these kids, it’s on the parents.
You can get a Prepaid cellphone at dollar general for 30 dollars, shut up. Also, do you even know what a cellphone contract is?
"when you can afford a car, but can't afford a school lunch" yes, cause everyone buys a car at it's full price
Nelson Ruiz most phones are a one time payment and ppl save up to buy them.
@Angel S thats not Admins. those sit in some office and do nothing but getting a paycheck.
I still remember my high school was one of the few districts that didn't food shame. The only limitation they made for those debt was one lunch line was given access and they clarified that one but everyone got a hot lunch.
1:00 Dad likes the liberty.
I wish this will happen also in the Philippines.
*03:30** - NEVER WILL THAT HAPPEN, BECAUSE THOSE SCHOOL MEALS FOR THE CHILDREN ARE SHOULDERED BY THEIR PARENTS AND NOT TOTALLY SUBSIDISED BY THE GOVERNMENT AND MANY CHILDREN GOT BULLIED BECAUSE THEY PARENTS ARE NOTHING TO PAY WITH THEIR CHILD'S SCHOOL LUNCH BILL.*
*"THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS FREE MEAL".*
😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁
I wish this happened in Chesapeake, Va
We never had junk food, it was not allowed. But some times I did pack my lunch, I did buy my milk aswell.
As a person, if I was selected for a university president(average salary is $500,000 yr) I would probably either start a program to send boxes of groceries to households once a week or pay the lunch fees for students in all schools surrounding the university.
damn that school got nice food tbh
Wow, if only our school served lunch like that.
All school lunches should be free
Bacon and rice, that's all one needs. . . and maybe 2 fiber gummies.
I remember getting my lunch and not having enough money and my meal being taken away
Oof 😅
I am only going to have 30 minutes to eat but when we have christmas and thanksgiving meals it takes like 20 or even 25 minutes to wait in line
I'm not surprised they called out Tampa.

Ah, yes. The 3 r's. Reading, ritring and rithmetic.
This compare to Miami Dade county school is amazing because my school lunch is dodo
Gordito Spams L2 doodoo not dodo
Gordon Ramsay should react to the food
I remember reduced lunch even into my college career in Milwaukee Wisconsin I'd supply $1.15 to the $0.21 lunch no off days 🤷♀️😶
We get soggy tacos half a small cup of fruit and vegi
Love this
Such a great segment. Thank you!
They take our lunches if we don't have the money I always get a lil scared of going up the the register
Amazing.. here in Sweden it's an everyday thing. We just take things for granted.
Couple this with the story with the one where grocery stores throw away good food…. And yikes.
It's really easy to prepare your kids lunch at home just do it the night before simple as that and give it to him before they go it's better than giving them lunch money and then they get bullied and then they lose their lunch money are always put a few extra dollars and their lunch box and a ziplock bag just in case they're still hungry
some parents can't. Some have to get up for work early and come home late and don't have the time. Or some don't have enough food for that
Growing up poor we had some hungry days....with me, my sister and brother we would snitch food, fruit was easy to get...at home you never opened the fridge to take something, my mother would, I will break you arm if you take something.....lunched at school she would wrap a sandwich in newspaper...so embarrassing...I had a friend and her mom always gave her a thermos of warm cocoa, she would give me the cup and she would drink from the thermos.
We didn't have a lunch account , we brought are lunch money in very day to pay for lunch.
its good to see that in this school district they are doing a good job and offering access to food. i don't love that they are eating while working which is not exactly a great thing to do. I mean you do it when you have to- but taking time to just rest and eat is necessary. but there should be more collaboration between schools and nonprofits across the united states. if there is a program that is working - why not do it everywhere? why must it be so hard to change this.
