Does this mean I'm famous now mate? 🤣 Did I tell you I had a boo boo the other week and put a massive 350mm wide dip in the front roller? Had a planned power cut so decided to do some maintenance whilst it was off, clean the extractor filters etc. Thought I'd drain the compressor, so turned it off at the wall ready to drain it, but the power came on two hours earlier than planned, so got back on with work. Forgot I'd switched it off (I never do normally) and started sanding 🤦♂️. Was enough pressure in the tank for a start to tension everything normally, but about half way through it dropped, belt went slack and the room started to fill with the sweet scent of burning rubber. Lovely.
Argh so it basically pushed the timber through the rubber roller without any abrasive 😖😖 balls!

@@BradshawJoinery yeah, basically the belt became loose, so the rubber roller was just spinning and rubbing over the back of the static abrasive and just burnt/melted about a 1.5mm deep valley in it. 🤦♂️
I looked at getting the roller re-vulcanised, and you're looking around £1k+vat. And I don't think I'll get a spare for mine off the shelf, as it's as old as the hills. But to be honest I've got it sorted anyway. I cut a bit of board 1100x1050 and spray adhesived a sheet of abrasive to it (just one of the belts cut up). Then I disconnected the safety switches so it would run without any belts on etc. And started it up, then kept feeding through the sheet increasing the height by 0.15mm at a time until it was cutting the full width of the roller so I knew it was flat. Then I put the paper back on, and redressed the conveyor by removing the safety switch, so I knew they were both running perfectly parallel to each other. Was a bit of a faff, but if I stick through a piece or mdf 1050mm wide and then check it with the calipers there is no more than 0.05mm deviation anywhere across the full width. That's good enough for me, so I think I've got away with it 🤞.
Won't ever be able to do it again though, as it'll be too high for the steel roller on the second belt, so better make sure I don't bugger it up again.😂😂

I’ve got a 1100 twin belt Sandya which is brilliant when it’s working! Currently rise/fall and feed aren’t working, hopefully this will give me some more things to check!

Fantastic Introduction to wide belt sanding! Every apprentice in the trade should watch your videos! It's a finicky machine to get to grips with setting up but certainly pays its dues! As you mentioned, it's important to inspect the machine prior to buying second hand and especially check the condition of the conveyor belt and main roller as that is imperative for accurate sanding results.
All the other bits and bobs can generally be maintained and repaired but not so much the latter as it would be hugely expensive!

I have just purchased a used SCM Sandya 1K Three weeks ago but still waiting for the spark to come and get a supply to it, all aired up and good to go apart from Electric.
I also invested in the remote fobs that you installed previously saves my legs back and forth to the extractor and great when I change the bags saves me having to come inside to switch on to make sure I have no leaks as like you my 3-bag unit is housed outside.

Good move Ollie, they're great time saving machines once you get to know how to run and tweek them. I used to run two Viet's inline for calibrating panels prior to veneering press work. The first one sands the underside the second sands above bringing the work to a uniform thickness. Enjoyed listening to your content. Tony

Thanks for the review. I had worked for a small local wood shop and this machine of yours is similar; their's having the auto height feed gage on the lower left. Their finger tracker on the belt was
loose and previously broken-bent. They were too cheap to keep a good set of papers and the right side of the feed belt was uneven in sanding depth. Might have been the large roller bearing beginning to fail or more so. I have a 600 MM planer and find with M42 knives I can accurately mill most of the hard woods I come across in the projects. I can see how the wide sander would
pay off as I expand the range or projects. As you say, muntins need that finder paper sanding. Have a good week other there.

Great video Ollie. I've always been keen to know more about wide belt sanders as at some point I'd like to get one for myself. (I've had the large jet oscillating drum sander for a few years - it's not a bad machine, and capable of flattening small sashes, but absolutely nothing on a wide belt in terms of power and capacity) I've always wondered why a good volume of compressed air was needed and now you've explained it perfectly - looks like i'll have to factor in getting a better continuous cfm compressor with any machine I find. Thanks also for all the buyers tips too. 👍👍
Yeah the compressor side is quite demanding. I think newer sanders can use a electro pneumatic system which is less demanding but slightly more prone to being temperamental.
Have you put a sash through yet with the glass bar parallel to belts….. that will wake you up 😂👍🏻
Destroyed a few sashes on my learning curve !
Machine sat my workshop for a year and half before I got it wired up and a compressor to run it, I’d be lost without it now!
It’s my go to now straight after mortising, priori to laminate trimming haunch to final depth, and clean up inside edge.
Sanding using any method can trash a sash real fast ! And I think if we’re honest we’ve all been there! Especially with the old makita belt sander!
I’m running 120 on first roller 150 on second, I pretty much make everything I make .75-1 mm thicker on thicknesser, then final sand everything at end 0.2 -.3 max each pass., obviously face side down first !
You can do your double hung sashes too, one face ( flat side ) on board, other side either dry fit bottom/ top rail and stiles only for ‘special jobs’ but normally I do flat side on machine and meeting rail side with Festool sander👍🏻 tennoner and morticer and pretty much dialed in perfect so usually not an issue unless I’ve ‘Funked’ up a piece of stock and grabbed something else to get it done.

Thanks mate, it's a fantastic machine, wish we had one as an apprentice, instead we had a flat bed sander with a pad arm. That taught you to be careful with what you were doing
@@BradshawJoinery also you don’t need to worry as much about nicks in surface planer or thicknesser which is gold!
On one item, prob not to much time saving from just hitting it with Festool belt sander, but it’s like your door Hanging video, when you’re putting a few frames through the time saving is exponentially quicker! And you’re not just ‘sweetening out’ the corners, the whole thing is dead flat and exactly consistent thickness between panels all day long. 👍🏻
When I did my apprenticeship, we left styles long. Skew nailed to bench! And hand planed joints flat!
No stroke sander! Not much of anything really! No three phase!
Just an extremely skilled old bloke! A ‘kitty’ combo jointer a sheppach saw! A morticer! A Dewalt radial arm a router, and that was about it from memory 👍🏻
You can pressure washer those burn marks out and generally wash all the grime out hang out to dry and reuseI’ve done it a number of times and they come up good as new give it a go you’ll be surprised how clean they become👍

If the manufacturer of the remotes has made a few sales maybe you should get a refund 😁!
I managed to get one of those wixsey 550 digital readouts and fitted it at the weekend so all good now regards the thickness readout now, I suspect that the old mechanical readout must have a work cog somewhere causing the issue with skipping digits every so many revolutions.
I sprayed the feed belt with a couple of coats of the Clear Plastikote non slip from Toolstation and that has certainly helped with the feed issue the belt certainly isn't as slick anymore it is coarse to the touch now so fingers crossed.
Just re the PRF Glue its great for long open time when working with ACCOYA I generally get it from UREKA, they do all the glues for use with vacuum forming also as well as those PFHOL rollers that you used in the curved cabinet build.
Thankyou Kevin, He offered any other products that may help me to be fair to him. Good to know in the belt slippage, I will get some PRf glue. Some glueups are a pain.

Just out of curiosity, did you have to change the felt/graphite on the platen? We've just brought one and the platen needs refreshing. No idea what's best way to sort it.

Great video! We've just got one of these machines and trying to get it up and running. We made epoxy resin tables. This is going to sound simple, but I wondered if you ever had issues with getting the green power light on?! We've had it wired up professionally and checked all the stops are disengaged, but can't get it firing!!
Air pressure on? Sometimes I have to wiggle the upper belt roller when air is on to get it to lift and activate the switch

Hi, im not sure, there is a lot of thinks going on with it. Normally if problem with pneumatic side, the air cylinders have rusted inside and siezed, normally because the air supply hasnt gone though a dryer and there is moisture inside itt.

When you turn on the motor you first connect 3x230V to it in the star position. Then you connect 3x400V in the triangle position. As the motor wiring is the same - just connected differently - it will draw more amps at 230V as at 400V. It is done on bigger motors in order to limit the amps draw and to protect the motor from sudden high amps (and overheating)

Thanks for the introduction, very helpful. I've recently bought a second-hand twin SCM and am having issues with the tracking, after 10 seconds of running the belts run off the ends tearing them to shreds. It looks to have the same tracking system as the one in this video so I was wondering if you've had a similar issue at all and if you had any advice on how to solve this?
does the top roller move when you block the jet of air that tracks the belt? maybe the pneumatic ram is seized. Another common mistake is its wired in and running backwards... dont ask how i know
Have you ever changed the V-belts on your sander? We have the same one and are looking for some guidance as to how to get access to the pulleys--thanks in advance.

Hi, thanks for the great video! I followed all the steps and got the the point of pressing the on button, however the light stayed white for 20 minutes and never turned green. When I went to turn the machine on it only ran for a second before shutting off. Am I missing anything that would stop the light turning green and allowing me to proceed?

I am not sure. We have an old Hydrovane 33 and it runs it no bother. is all i can tell you

hi where do you get the belts from please? I've been looking for a couple different grit large sheets of sandpaper to make large sanding boards for hand sanding boxes etc. one of these belts would do me a few years as a hobby woodworker. I've spent hours and hours looking with no joy so far. cheers

Do you mean the left sanding thinner than the right?
Yes small adjustment made by grub screw seats on the removable piece that comes out during belt change. Otherwise it's in initial setup of the bed screws(bigger job)n
@@BradshawJoinery I have a similar machine twin head right side is sanding tighter than the left . I'm going to try and adjust
@@BradshawJoinery i think i sorted the sander out i adjusted the clamping levrt to tighten down that side a fraction as the head is cantilevered from the opposite side
