- This is Modi's first visit since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. India has not publicly condemned Moscow's actions but has called for a diplomatic solution. Mr. Modi is planning to hold talks with Russian President Vladamir Putin Monday this evening. India has maintained close ties with Russia, despite pressure from its Western allies.

Really? Can you provide any details at all? Modi lost a lot of votes in the recent elections there. Russia is making zero profit from the oil it's having to ship almost half way around the world to India, a country that is absolutely cooking and has a fraction of the GDP of any western country, where teenage women in the countryside have to decide between collecting water or getting educated. Ahhh, & those educated Indians who emigrate & take their skills & knowledge and income generation with them, they are not going to Russia, China, Brazil, South Africa, Indonesia or Argentina.

So? India China relationship is even older. So is India-Korea and India-Japan. Yet we've joined hands with China and fought Japan not even a century ago, and now we are joining hands with Japan and planning to fight China.
I know folks love all this feel good "we are best brother countries" stuff, but honestly, in geopolitics, there are no permanent friends or alignments. And right now, especially, alignments across the world are changing rapidly. Yes, Russia and India are not at loggerheads and have no factors that will make them opposed to each other for the foreseeable future. But you can't deny the adjustment that the relationship is going through due to Russia being pulled by China and India being pulled by USA.
Only saving grace of this relationship has been that both India and Russia want to ensure they don't become deputies of USA and China respectively in this new Cold War. And they both recognize that India-Russia relationship is the key to ensuring that doesn't happen. But sometimes, raw economic power of USA and China can alter priorities of Russia and India. And that might pull us apart. Won't matter then that we've got some "2000 year old" relationship.
