Thank you MJ. I received your PSU unit yesterday and the replacement was fairly easy. The hardest part is dealing with all of the cable connections for the first time. My IMac has needed a new PSU for years and I did not realize it. I don't think Apple wants this problem to be made public. I talked to two Apple support staff and neither one of them would tell me if it could be the PSU even though I had pretty much pinpointed it as the problem. Whatever it does, in my case, it induced a horrible static into my home wiring that interfered with everything from my guitar amps to my home stereo. No line conditioner can eliminate it. I bought two of them so I know. The defective PSU would even cause a static noise to come out of my Tripp-Lite line conditioner. It is dead silent now along with my guitar amps and stereo. Thanks again. Now I need to tackle that blown left speaker.

Got the replacement power supply with suction cups, T10 screwdriver, and tweezers. Watched this video and a couple others and my computer is back up and running! I’m so happy, thank you very much.

The procedure for glass an LCD as outlined in the ASG specifies that this be done with the unit standing upright. This done so that you can more easily disconnect the display cables...
It should also be noted that the the unit should disconnected from the mains and allowed to discharge.

I just changed out the power supply by following her instructions. Put it all back together and the screen didn't come on so disassembled again and reconnected the cables. Evidently didn't make the connection the first time. I did find it easier to install the screws by wrapping a little scotch tape around the screw on the torx head driver. Holds the screw in place as you install it and you just retract the torx head driver. If the tape stays on the screw, no worries. Better than fishing it out of the unit.

Hi Thanks. I recommend after reballing or reflowing the solder to manually set the fans at a minimum of 2000 rpm and with small desktop fan at the back (at speed 1 perhaps or 2).
For the late 2009 iMac ATI Mobility 4850 GPU, what kind of thermal pads is need to replace the thermal pads (for the chips that surround the GPU chip?), how thick and what brand?
Thank you. Have a great day.
    God bless. Philippians 2:13

it is an ESD (electrostatic discharge) strap, aka a grounding strap - our human bodies have the potential to conduct electricity and to store static electricity easily (think rubbing your feet on carpet and touching a door knob) that zap can destroy your computer's exposed componentry, so an ESD strap is a fabric strap with an exposed metal surface that touches your skin, connected to a flexible cord that is clipped onto a metalic object or proper ground, discharging the static electricity.

biggest danger is the capacitor which holds a high voltage charge and it keeps trickle charging when in use, have you done a video showing how to replace the motherboard battery? Also any ideas on where to get a replacement? Its 10 years old and I guess a replacement would be a good idea.

Are there any known symptoms that signals a power supply is going out? My PS shows corrosion all over the board. It also gets really hot. Is this a sign it's going bad?

Hi MJ,. I successfully changed my HD in a 2009 IMac thanks to you and your "How to" video and the website info, but can I ask you,. Is the power supply another thing that will fail in the IMac? Does Apple do this on purpose? I was so thrilled with Apple when my HD failed around 2 years, that I just bought a new phone, The SamSung Galaxy S3. Apple better wise up if they want happy repeat customers.

speaking from experience yes these tend to get really hot and I mean REALLY HOT I do not know why but the late 2009's do. My iMac runs about a basic 65-70 Celsius and the highest I got it to was 100 Celsius and it still works XD I love this thing.

Why isn't the psu isolated and with its own dedicated vent? I imagine that would cause heat issues for the whole (expensive) system.

anti-static electricity device, static electricity as when you spark some one in a hand shake, What it does it prevents that any static electriciry coming from your body to burn any compontent in a electronic device. Verry comon in dry climates and dry winters..

Dear iFixitYourself, My iphone 4 randomly shuts off. I'll use it, lock the screen, and put into my pocket. Later on I will check the phone to see the time, or if I have any new texts... and its off! Does this 4-5 times daily. I just have to turn it back on, but its inconvenient. Also, in addition, it sometimes doesn't charge, and sometimes does. Even though it always says its charging. Do you have any ideas on the situation? I have searched online for hours, and have found nothing. (over a month

when i did it, capacitor on the power supply made a loud spark. even when unplugged from power source. is there a hazard of being electrocuted?

    • @gulfsurfco
      @gulfsurfco 7 лет назад

The capacitor can hold a charge. That IS the hazard, so always be careful with any large capacitors.

Please MJ. Your tutorials are very helpful but u really must teach how to put it back not just say "Happy Repairing" after disconnecting so many things. There's nothing Happy about repairing if u don't know how to put back what u removed.
