The best, I mean the best video of performing iMac 27" repairs or mods I have seen. A good picture with screen prompts is awesome. No blah, blah, blah. I hope you produce more great videos. Thanks
This is the clearest guide I have found using the OWC data doubler, OWC had a ODD swap out instruction video for the data doubler but have since taken it down, so well done you, appreciated.
@@2cute2shihtzu Hi, I intend to remove the optical drive permanently and install a ssd in that area and connect it directly to the sata port on the motherboard of my iMac 21.5 inch mid 2011, will it cause any issue if the temperature sensor is not connected to anything?
This is an awesome video... i been watching some of those SSD upgrade videos, none of them was as good as this one.. thanks alot. And its really good that you can keep the main HDD for storage and boot from the SSD even though its hooked up to the optical drive cables.. Great video.
@@krut00 I had to redo 7 months ago, been fine since. It's a pain but better than scrapping or trying to buy an overpriced one that might have been baked. When I took it apart 7 months ago I removed the dvd drive and rewired the sata cable through a hole I drilled into the rear. I can now use ssd's as backup, or boot drives with different versions of Osx. While I was at it I enlarged the air vents at the rear at the top to aid air flow. Temp rarely goes above 65c now. I'll not be able to resell of course 😂
Why not just replace the HD? That is what I am about to do. My HD seems to be having problems anyway. I found that I could not install Windows 7 without an *internal* optical drive.
That's the temperature sensor originally on the optical drive which you can see at ~2:10. Just stick it to the new SSD and connect it back to where it was disconnect...should be good from there.
Honestly I'm not super sure what will happen. I assume the fan will go nuts. I think your best bet is to ask "iFixIt". Sorry I'm not very helpful on this.
If it disconnects, the fan goes crazy. I chose to just stick the sensor of the optical drive in the frame of the imac and everything worked normally. I will use an application to handle the fans. So far, so good. Baking video card, ready. Plastering the video card and the processor, ready. temperature reached with the brightness of the screen to the maximum and running photoshop. 45 C. video card still does not fail xD
Hi there! I'm installing this into a 21.5" 2011 iMac and I was watching OWC's optical drive replacement video and they had a heat sensor wire that you take off. I saw you take that off on your video but I don't think I saw you put it back onto the SSD. Is it required?
It does if you remove the main drive unless you buy the OWC special cable. Personally I just use SSD fan control (free app and set the fan to 1100 rpm). I'm only using the Imac for light work and RUclips so been fine that way. I also use as a display from my PC using displayport to mini dispayport. If i was doing fresh SSD install I would buy the OWC cable as the normal one only works with the drives it came with.
hi there, I just installed a new ssd instead of odd. Your video really helped me. However, how can I use the new ssd as boot drive and use old HDD as storage drive? please help~~
great video. thanks ! I also want to add SSD and keep the old 1T harddrive as storage for 2009 iMac 27 how do you install or transfer Mac OSX to the new SSD ? I have a Win10 on the bootcamp located in the original 1T hard drive. can I transfer it to the new SSD too ?
Just wondering if you can use the original hard drive from the old imac and the new owc ssd at the same time. Is there enough space to install them both? I got a external ssd to boot my imac and the original hard drive to be the storage. But the USB 2.0 port is slowing down my imac speed. So i am thinking about a way to install the ssd internally. Thank you.
@@2cute2shihtzu so how did you clone the data to new ssd and make it as primary hard drive ? In other words how to use ssd as boot drive and stock hdd as data drive ?
@@razaaali you can change that in settings after you install an OS on the SSD. settings/start up disk/ select SSD and click restart... this is after you install an OS on the SSD...
I have a bootcamp partition on my current SSD where like 55GB is Mac and 200GB is Windows. If I do this and add another SSD and format it as an exFat, can I use it as file storage on both OS systems? Anybody tried this? I assume it'd work but I don't wanna rip the whole machine apart if I don't have to lol
I'm writing an article for a internationally know Apple site and I'd like to link to this video. Unfortunately I can't divulge which one or compensate you. But I expect you'll get a lot of page hits. Do I have your permission?

Thank you - very clear video and no talking. Hope this works the same for the 21.5 version as well.
Great video! No useless talks😁. Although would help some written comment about what to pay attention during the procedure.
Doesn't the optical drive connection throttle the SSD...? Might be better to just buy a hybrid drive...
Attach a small magnet to the screwdriver to ensure the screws come out without falling, you don't need tweezers.
Any remarks on the GPU after 3 years?

I'm glad this video helps.
what is needed to be done to the ssd so that the iMac recognizes it?
what you need is make the new disk as bootable drive. There are quite a few tutorials on youtube that will help you with that. cheers.
Thank you!!
is this iMac still alive in 2024? can't image the SSD cost 8 years ago.

Although I can work it out from pausing your video. You don't actually show putting the temp sensor back on.
the Temp sensor was no need it, bc there no where to connect. So She probable will use a software to regulate and control the fan speed.
@@r.c.850 at 3:41 you can see the Temp Sensor attached to the SSD drive...

Can it be done to a late 2009 21" iMac?

Use a program called Disk Sensei, when set to auto it will slow the fan down.

Yes, I plug the cable back to its original slot and stick the sensor back onto the SSD that forgot to show in the video.
It looks like the fan runs continuously if you don't do that. Maybe annotate the video to emphasize this. I have to take it apart again.

I guess you forgot to plug in the temperature cable, the imac fan will be fast
Placing SSD on the optical drive will only give you half the speed of the SSD if not less
I'm I correct?
Did you test the drive speed?

Make the SSD the boot drive and install OSX fresh in there. You can find tutorials easily on RUclips.
