Releasing a Metroid Collection would single handedly make me buy a Switch. It's my favorite Nintendo franchise by far. And among my top 5 games of all time.
What if they just agreed to RENT you a few old games for 60 bucks a year? Almost as good, right? 😂. What a terrible disappointment it often is, waiting for Nintendo to do the obvious thing for the fans.
They need to because more than any other of their franchises, Metroid is a story and has a well defined timeline. It's not like Mario or Zelda where nearly every game is standalone. Metroid is one big story (not counting the Primes which are separate) and you miss out on important details by not playing the other games.
This is honestly my game of the year. I freaking love this game. Repeat playthroughs have been so much fun. Only game I see rivaling this game for my game of the year is EndWalker. Also, for my favorite Metroid game of all time, it has to be Prime. It's basically Super Metroid in First Person. And I love it for that.
The original creators of the series did not ignore the fans' outcry for a new game. so they built and released a game satiating that burning desire. and Metroid: Dread is a fantastic game that is canon. telling a story that respects the past canon games.
@@sebastiansanhueza9601 the original creator was with them every step of the way, the dread reports basically tell you the journey in a few of the vids
@BuddyTheRookie nonsensical puzzles?? Dread is one of the easiest Metroid games puzzle-wise. It's not a rogue-like. Rogue-likes are generally randomly generated games that start you back at the beginning every time you die, all though often you are able to carry over something from your previous run.

There are plenty of goty level games that are fantastic. Psychonauts 2, Returnal, deathloop, and tales of arise (my original front runner for goty before dread) are great examples. Now the competition might not be as stacked as say 2017 or 2018, but it was much better than 2019 and 2020
@@glenwarne6492 I think stating a game is "goty level" is an unfair assessment. Just like with oscar-bait movies, we've been getting a lot of award-bait games like TLOU 2 which are pretty much made just to win awards from the get-go. Just because a game like Metroid: Dread doesn't cost $500,000,000 to make, that doesn't make it any less valuable critically.
My favorite metroid is fusion. I played it when I was like 8 and it scared the everloving shit out of me. Beating it felt like a real accomplishment too cuz that game is tough
It's one of the few games I've ever played where as soon as I rolled the credits I wanted to replay it right away. Super Metroid was one of those games.
I just realized why I love this channel so much. Jeremy loves exactly the same films from childhood as I do. Mortal Kombat, Back to the Future, two of my all time favourite.. I saw these clips a thousand of times Jeremy showed.
After years, I finally bought a Switch, just for this, I made a promise that I would only buy it when Nintendo released another Metroid, and I could be more glad that I did, Dread is the love letter that Metroid deserved and I loved every second of it
Favorite is Metroid Prime. Amazing atmosphere, amazing gameplay, amazing music, exceeded ALL expectations, released almost 20 years ago, but I'll never forget it. And that menu select theme gives me chills. Nothing like that track to make you realize you're about to start playing something really special.
yes on dying a lot to the bosses. watching a speedrunner on his first playthrough of the game struggle against a boss and 2 days after just toying with the boss because speedrun is amazing
I just decided to go back through Dread today and I just got to Ghavoran. The thing I'm particularly appreciating this time around is just how fluid Samus is. Every now and then I go into this mode where I'm just running, sliding, flashing, countering and wall jumping through whole sections with ease! It's almost parkour! Granted, I still have to slow down now and again, but I do think that overall speed and momentum of traversal is improved when compared to any of the other entries. I will never get tired of sliding under level geometry! Also, word to anyone who may actually read this...I highly suggest reducing the brightness. Not all the way, but close to it. Presentation matters, and I find the game looks much better. Colors pop more, Samus glows more and the lighting contrast in general is improved.
For someone that has played almost every Metroid would definitely say that Metroid prime is now my favorite out of all Metroid and I think it has mainly to do with it aging pretty well especially after 20 years
I love this channel for the movie reviews, but I shouted out loud when I saw this video on my feed, because Metroid is my favorite gaming series and I didn't think I'd see it on here! Based on Jeremy's review, I can tell he is a long time fan of the game. The things he says and comments on truly shows he knows what Metroid is all about. Thank you, Jeremy, for this Dread review. I loved watching.
About the missiles being stacked as being upgrades instead of a selection various types. Honestly, they did that since Metroid Fusion and I prefer it over having to select the individual type of missile. One of the few negatives in Super Metroid is how selecting the type of missile (bomb, and x-ray visor) broke the flow by stopping you on your tracks by going through the list. One thing I do agree though. Ice missile/beam should be a sperate thing. This way the freezing option could be used way more for puzzle solving and enemy crowd control, and the super-missiles be the main attack option. I guess, if you and/or someone else would like to toggle between missile options, I guess, since the analog stick is used for movement, using the D-pad to change your missile type might be the way to do it. It's definitively quicker than pressing a button circling through the options.
Thanks Jeremy! I found out this game come out because of your review! Went out bought a switch and just cannot put the game down... awesometacular indeed!
Such a great game. The last section of the game is a fantastic and extremely satisfying culmination of the storyline set into motion in the original Metroid. Samus is such a wonderfully cool character. If anybody tells you that there aren't any good female representation in the world of video games is either lying to you or has never been aware of who Samus is.
My favorite Metroid game is still Return of Samus on GB. Its clunky, repetitive, and visually limited, but Gunpei Yokoi, rest his soul, worked so hard to make it one of the best gameboy games there is and I think he pulled it off. The game represents Metroidvania the best, linear pathways with a set course but the freedom to chart that course and explore at your own pace. The game brilliantly teaches attentive players what locations house items, enemies, and paths of progression. It takes something that would be a detriment (seeing the same locale in a 2nd area) and makes its something that gets you excited. And because of its structure you hardly need a map to go through it, only really needing it to practice speed runs. On top of that its ability to instill fear and unease in the player with its design as well as the focus on a more somber, bleak narrative would go on to revolutionize the series from its initial start. Much like a classic Megaman, I can just pick this up whenever I want and enjoy it. I highly recommend the DX fan mod that adds color to the game.
Hell yeah :D I'm glad you really liked this, and made a review of it! I hope the game sells amazingly well and the series becomes popular again so we get more games X3
Just the sheer fluidity of movement in this game is insane! I want every Metroidvania to feel this smooth now😂 Hollow Knight Silksong is another game I am just unbelievably hyped for, and now I’m like, what if they gave Hornet a slide maneuver?🤔
Heck yeah, I love it so much! Played through it 4 times already and now I only need to beat it in Hard Mode under 4 hours to get the final ending rewards. It's really one of my favorite Metroid games, which is huge for me since it's my favorite series! The game controls like a dream and Samus has attitude and swagger that you just gotta love. Still can't believe it's exists! My favorite Metroid is still Super Metroid, but man, this game is so close to that for me!
It’s fun, I agree bad guys kinda easy… bosses fun and challenging, but as the game goes on the game gets very easy. Once I got screw attack revisiting old areas were cake walk.
the point is to eventually become super powerful, screwattack makes getting 100% less of a chore and make you feel like you've progressed since you were last in that area
Played it, beat it (multiple times), loved it. It's a true evolution of the series, and i love that Dread leaves you to figure things out for yourself will giving you enough hints through the environmental design to always continue moving forward. The puzzles are fantastic, the boss fights are the best they've ever been IMHO, and the story is engaging. Dread is paced in such a way that i truly feel a sense of accomplishment when I defeated the final boss in normal and especially hard mode. Metroid Dread kicks so much ass.
I've been consuming tons of Metroid content and I'm subscribed to you idk why it took youtube 2 weeks to recommend me this video. Either way though, glad you enjoyed it

On that last note, those upgrades are so fucking satisfying when you finally get em. I 100%'d this game and enjoyed the shit out of it. Game of the year? Prob
The atmosphere, music and bosses of super Metroid are the best for me. Some level ideas and riddles of am2r where very good 😌 I was tired to hunt the same meteoroids in am2r over and over again. Some new enemies were nice. But it was a great game,
I've been waiting for your review of this game man since I watch a lot of your movie reviews. I gotta say Metroid Dread is one of the most intuitive, entertaining, fun, one player experiences I've played since Metroid Prime. The look and feel of the game deserves so many props on so many levels. I've never been big on Metroid or 2D Metroids for that matter so for me to enjoy playing this all the way through and even beating the game I couldn't agree more with your review. It's definitely Awesometacular!
@@tvirus9369 To me Other M was alright. It lacked music and had too much talking but to me, it had the best visuals of any Metroid game. The looks of all samus weapons and beams looked gorgeous (wave & plasma). The implementation of the speed booster in a 3rd person metroid game worked out great. The power bombs in Other M looked so menacing. Even the vibration when they exploded felt good. Probably my favorite version of power bombs in any Metroid game. The gravity suit in this game was not for water, it was for actual space gravity, which was interesting and made sense. And overall the game had a creepy vibe to it with all the silence going on.

I love that he gave a shoutout to AM2R. I’d like to see him review that sometime... Dread is awesome. My only gripes are the analog stick, the music, and the density of the levels / map. I just think it’s overly-complicated. The music is also not really that memorable, and it’s hard to shinespark sometimes. And the EMMIs do drag future playthroughs down. 8.5/10 for me though, still fantastic.
It really feels like the perfect culmination for everything we've seen since Super Metroid. Samus Returns, Fusion, but also a few ideas from the Prime games (Storm Missiles being similar to Seeker Missiles, for one). Not to mention finally delivering us that long-awaited Dread. And just the fact Nintendo really put their effort in to promote this game despite poor sales in the past and that paying off bigtime even in Japan. Maybe the standard difficulty is a bit much for newer players but honestly I've not even heard many complaints about that, besides the usual dumb journalists.
I love the franchise as a whole. My favorite of the entire series will always be Metroid Prime 1 and 2 for the Gamecube. Soooooo much fun! And I like all the side scrollers as well but I cant stand playing any of them on hand held devices. That's what I loved about the Gamecube attachment that allows you to play gameboy/Advance games on your tv screen. That's how I played Return of Samus, Zero Mission and Fusion.
You nailed this review 👍. I felt exactly the same way. To add the boss fights weren't so frustrating that it made me quit, but rather just tough enough and fair enough where I kept trying again and again. It was SO SATISFYING to beat each boss when I did; a feeling I never got with previous Metroid games. I don't know Super Metroid has always been my favorite game, even in my top 3 of all time, but THIS game? I don't know ... It's up there for sure. It might be better than Super Metroid. It's damn good and a welcome surprise in 2021
I think the ost had a very different purpose than in other 2d Metroids. It went much more for the spook factor and atmosphere than creating memorable melodies, and I think it was great at that. I won't catch myself humming any track here like I do Kraid's theme from ZM, but I thought it enhanced the moment to moment gameplay and made it more immersive
@@joaoassumpcao3347 I will say, the sound design in the E.M.M.I zones did really get me sweating. But I still would have loved a few new bangers. The credits theme was particularly disappointing, especially in comparison to Prime 3's credits theme, which I just re-listened to recently.
Nintendo would scrub AM2R form the internet entirely if they could, and then nuke the internet from orbit because it's weird and they don't understand it.
I don't recall anytime Jeremy had talked about Metroid, but now I have and I couldn't be more happier especially for the metroid series. Instant fav and like.
It was an amazing game on all accounts but the music. It's soundtrack didn't come close to the original composer's legendary hits, although Lower Brinstar was used in a cutscene. With that said, if you haven't bought it, definitely do so.
You know you’re an OG when you complain about the D-pad &missles.. one other complaint I’d have is the music. Some great ambiance and soundtracks but definitely doesn’t have any soundtracks that I’ll be humming in my head years down the road like I do with zero mission
Yeah, for me the music is the biggest disappointment of Dread. It's fine but it never reaches the heights of SM or the rest of the series. It more than makes up for it in so many other ways though!
Yeah that is true it just needs that one iconic tune that makes the music seperate from the other metroid games. But the music does realy fit the atmosphere in all of the areas.
Yes and no on the music. I don't think anything will live up to Super. Dread aimed for a more ambient tracks kinda like BotW did. If you look at it from that standpoint its pretty good. I too would have preferred something more though, but I think it was a design decision.
I'm glad it isn't just me who misses the D Pad. I am absolutely horrible at aiming with the analog stick. I can't tell you how many times I died because my aim was a hair off because of how loose the analog stick controls. Otherwise the movement of Samus in general is awesome and so fluid. On the music, I agree. The game really could have used a couple of bangers. The music isn't bad by any means but basically no tracks stuck in my head. One, more thing, and this might just be me, but I feel like the game could have used some more variety in terrain. With Super Metroid, every single area had it's own color palette and theme. I feel like in this game there's a bit too much "sci fi factory" environment. Some of the later areas in the game had more variety, but the fact that there's ice rooms and fire rooms, both in the same sector is weird. I feel like having a completely iced over zone, or a complete fire zone would have helped make the individual areas stand out more. Like, I remember Burneia (sp?) because it was the mostly underwater/raining area.

What if they just agreed to RENT you a few old games for 60 bucks a year? Almost as good, right? 😂. What a terrible disappointment it often is, waiting for Nintendo to do the obvious thing for the fans.
Honestly, Dread single handedly makes the Switch worth it in my opinion. Though I agree that Nintendo really NEEDS to re-release older Metroid games.
They need to because more than any other of their franchises, Metroid is a story and has a well defined timeline. It's not like Mario or Zelda where nearly every game is standalone. Metroid is one big story (not counting the Primes which are separate) and you miss out on important details by not playing the other games.
I bought a Switch just so I could play Dread.
Same for Samus Returns.
Hoping it gets nominated for GotY
The original creators of the series did not ignore the fans' outcry for a new game. so they built and released a game satiating that burning desire. and Metroid: Dread is a fantastic game that is canon. telling a story that respects the past canon games.
I thought Mercury Steam made this one.
@@sebastiansanhueza9601 they did
@@sebastiansanhueza9601 the original creator was with them every step of the way, the dread reports basically tell you the journey in a few of the vids
Glad to see a good review. David Jaffe called it poorly design. Now a Switch game I can really enjoy.
@BuddyTheRookie nonsensical puzzles?? Dread is one of the easiest Metroid games puzzle-wise. I honestly can't remember a single moment in the game as frustrating as that ridiculous room you had to bomb a precise random pixel to progress in Fusion, or the wall you had to walk through but the xray didn't hint at it in Super, or basically the entirety of Metroid 1.
Beat it, selected hard mode, immediately kept going. Literally the only non rogue like I started another run the seconds the credits ended.
Yeah a big part of that is the super fluid movement, it's just so smooth.
It's not a rogue-like. Rogue-likes are generally randomly generated games that start you back at the beginning every time you die, all though often you are able to carry over something from your previous run.
I know it's not a rogue like, this is the first "non" rogue like I did this with.
me too
Did you get all items in your first playthrough or you decided to save that for hard mode?
Metroid Prime 4 needs to come out already man even more hyped after dread!
I’m thinking about getting Metroid dread the only games I have played of that franchise is the Metroid prime trilogy to be honest
same here !
@@Metroid24abd should I play the others first or would I be ok with just this one cause I could be wrong but somehow the games are all connected supposedly
@@mattsultimategamingandrevi8249 theyre all connected sure but story isnt really a big focal point you can play metroid fusion with playing the others and still not really bat an eye just some games can reward you a bit with a "oh wow this event that happened in this metroid game makes sense now" so theres enjoyment in playing the previous ones but no need to feel gatekept if you havent
@@mattsultimategamingandrevi8249 the older games are great but they feel dated in a lot of ways, especially 1&2. The stories do all connect for the mainline 2D series. I think watching a recap of the story and going right into dread would be a good way to start.
Speaking of the missiles, always loved the different feel of the missile and super missile. You could really feel the impact and speed difference.
I never thought I’d hear Jeremy talk about the Metroid series! There are so few of us Metroid fans, it feels like I walked into an alternate universe lol. Metroid Fusion was always my game. I’ve played it more than I’ve played any other game ever, so Dread was such a fantastic nostalgia trip and an incredible sequel to my favorite game of all time. We finally have something in the timeline that takes place after Fusion!
Im glad you making game reviews again. Metroid Dread is fucking awesome. There is also credible rumours about a Metroid Prime 1 remake coming out before Prime 4 next year.
This is my game of the year. I loved this game so much
This year was so bad for video games so yea this is the goty
@@glenwarne6492 I dont think so. Plenty of solid/great games. We got re8, tales of arise, monster hunter rise, returnal, ratchet and clank, deathloop, it takes 2, psychonauts 2, guilty gear strive, and I can go on.
@@slj1537 we didn't get any masterpiece or true goty level games though
Just finished Dread and you're review is spot on. So good! The Metroid Zero Mission and Fusion really need to happen on Switch!
My favorite metroid is fusion. I played it when I was like 8 and it scared the everloving shit out of me. Beating it felt like a real accomplishment too cuz that game is tough
Same! I love all the metroids, but Fusion struck a chord with me.
Me too! Gave me nightmares and my parents tried to take it away from me lol
Okay, this looks Incredible.
Don't sleep on it, it's been the only thing I've been playing since launch
Because it is. Find out.
It is. Best Metroid since Prime on the Gamecube.
It's one of the few games I've ever played where as soon as I rolled the credits I wanted to replay it right away. Super Metroid was one of those games.
I am now addicted to this game. Definitely play especially if you're a fan of metroid.
I just realized why I love this channel so much. Jeremy loves exactly the same films from childhood as I do. Mortal Kombat, Back to the Future, two of my all time favourite.. I saw these clips a thousand of times Jeremy showed.
Just 100 percented this the other day and I am not normally the type that cares about doing that. Felt good.
Nice. I'm looking forward to doing that soon myself.
I'm replaying it in hard mode right now and I rarely replay single player games, that's how you know the game is good
This game is freaking awesome. I’ve beat it twice already and I’m going through the it on hard mode.
After years, I finally bought a Switch, just for this, I made a promise that I would only buy it when Nintendo released another Metroid, and I could be more glad that I did, Dread is the love letter that Metroid deserved and I loved every second of it
Fusion will forever be my favorite. First game with "horror" elements I ever played as a kid and it stuck with me all these years later
Jeremy continually referring to the EMMIs by the acronym is just funny to me
This game is amazing! I hope it does well. We need more games like this for the switch.
Now I can say that I never died to a boss that killed a speedrunner (I knew what to do from the treehouse direct but still).
I think we can all do that in this game because you literally have to become an expert at the boss's patterns to beat it, otherwise you die
I spent all of last weekend playing Dread, and it was just so satisfying when I completed the game
Man, great to know you're also a fan, my parents bought me the first Metroid on NES and since I'm a fan!!! I loved that you mentioned AMR2!!!
For someone that has played almost every Metroid would definitely say that Metroid prime is now my favorite out of all Metroid and I think it has mainly to do with it aging pretty well especially after 20 years
The boss fights were hard but didn’t feel cheap or unfair. The shine spark puzzles make you feel bad ass when you get do them right.
Jeremy's Switch Grip on the Thumbnail looks 🔥
Never clicked a video so fast. Metroid is and always was my favourite game
Same!
Love it when you do game reviews! It’s a nice change from movies reviews.
With so few games being released this year and many of them being mediocre this is honestly my game of the year.
Same.
Mine and easily
For me it ties with Psychonauts 2.
Nogaf
Deathloop?
I love how much justice you gave this review. Thank you for your awesome content!
I’ll be as old as Jeremy was in the thumbnail of his “Old” review by the time Prime 4 comes out.
Hell yeah :D I'm glad you really liked this, and made a review of it! I hope the game sells amazingly well and the series becomes popular again so we get more games X3
Same man
The game has awesome controls, nice visuals, and it's addictive as hell. Very well done!
Once I got screw attack revisiting old areas were cake walk.
thats the point lol the series builds u as the alpha of the planet.
the point is to eventually become super powerful, screwattack makes getting 100% less of a chore and make you feel like you've progressed since you were last in that area
This review had more passion and relevant knowledge shine through than most of your other reviews. Great work, Jeremy.
Either way though, glad you enjoyed it
I'm so happy this game turned out SO gooood!! I love me some Samus Aran. I've been breathing Metroid, Castlevania and Final Fantasy on a daily basis for the last 25 years. And doing so REALLY made me a happier man. Long live Metroidvanias and jRPGs!
Did not see this review coming but I’m glad it’s here!
On that last note, those upgrades are so fucking satisfying when you finally get em. I 100%'d this game and enjoyed the shit out of it. Game of the year? Prob
My man Jeremy with another reason i love this channel. Game reviews here are few and far in between but damn does he have good taste
I started playing Zero Mission recently, wanted to try and play the whole series in chronological order
Zero Mission is one of my favorite childhood games.
Your going to hate other m
Zero Mission is my fave
@@Fission889 How does the visual style of Metroid Dread stack up against Metroid Other M in your opinion?

It's a shame that MercurySteam seems to treat their employees rather poorly.
The devs deserve all the praise they've been given, their upper managements less so.

Jeremy paying respect to AM2R warmed my heart like nothing else. 🤜🤛 My man.
Thanks for acknowledging AM2R. That project was the spark that probably revived this franchise and gave us two great games afterwards.
I just started Hard mode today and it's a tough but satisfying challenge. You really have to master parrying but once your familiar with patterns, it isn't too rough.
I love this game, can't recommend it enough
just finished the game and 100% all the items. today Jan 21 2022. I spent no more than 30 tries trying to beat raven beak lol. great game. Nintendo, keep the metroid games coming!
Jeremy grew up rolling around in a ball.
Jeremy, I would have never guessed that you are 40 this year… you look good man, you look good. The years have been kind.
I think that there are too many perfect things in this game. This is probably the best Metroid Game.
Magnificent game! I rated it a 9/10 👍🏾
One of BEST Games I've played!! 🎉 🎉
Wow looks good😍 Will check it out. Looks like a classic contra
It's damn good and a welcome surprise in 2021
The only bad thing about this game is that the soundtrack was pretty forgettable but that gameplay is buttery smooth
I didn't hate the soundtrack, some of it was just ok then other themes were pretty good in my opinion. But yea, gameplay was fantastic.
Taking a shot for every time Jeremy says "missiles" 🤣
Nintendo would scrub AM2R form the internet entirely if they could, and then nuke the internet from orbit because it's weird and they don't understand it.
I don't recall anytime Jeremy had talked about Metroid, but now I have and I couldn't be more happier especially for the metroid series. Instant fav and like.
Still waiting for Resident Evil Village, but loved this review as a fellow metroid fan
Very nice review with no hate towards anything, love it❤️
It was an amazing game on all accounts but the music. It's soundtrack didn't come close to the original composer's legendary hits, although Lower Brinstar was used in a cutscene. With that said, if you haven't bought it, definitely do so.
Man, I just... I fucking loved the game. It's the only game I've ever 100%ed. I couldn't get enough of it. 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
@@Euruk1 agreed, almost all flaws with the game are just preferences
I've been waitin' for this Jeremy review! 🥂 Loved this game to death! It was actually my first 2D Metroid that I have ever beat. Couldn't stop playing as soon as I started!
