LOVE the Metroid franchise. I bought a Samus themed 3DS XL just for Samus Returns. Don't regret it at all. Also Super Metroid is on the virtual console for the 3DS. SO GOOD! :D
I am too but I wish they would name it something else. Don't get me wrong, my body is TOTALLY ready for a new 3D metroid game. But the Prime storyline has concluded. Give it a new title.
Just 100% completed the game yesterday! A fantastic remake that was able to satisfy my Metroid craving VERY temporarily... now on to Metroid Prime 4! And by the way, i'd also like a follow-up to Fusion.
Thank you for the awesome review. This was my first game ever. The original metroid 2 for grey box gameboy. Not only did I beat the game. I drew my own map and my family helped me. I was 6 years old when I got the original. And it was the first game I ever beat. Thank you for supporting this game with a solid review. Its so awesome to see my childhood in my hands again. Seeing the support for this series is special to me. And also thank you for the outro blast sound from samus's handcannon sound.
The final Chozo memory to me, seems like a dead ringer as to what they want to do next.; especially with its title. Also producer of this game: Sakamoto already stated, he wants his next project to be a new game. So if his next project going to be in the Metroid series, it'll certainly be a new game.
Awesome! I was not expecting you to review this, but I love it when you review games! Especially when it's Metroid! I will say though, I think the increase in "floor traps" was meant to get people to use Spider Ball/Phase Drift more (not that I did), and I liked the end boss. It raises as many questions about plotholes as it fixes, but the series is filled with plotholes anyway.
Thanks for the review, Jeremy! I am a huge Metroid fan and have played all the games up until now. It really hurts not being able to play this newest game since it's only on the 3DS. The 3DS is near the end of its life cycle and I'm not sure it's worth the $200 investment just for this one game. :'( I really wish they also released this game on the Switch somehow at 1080p resolution so all the Metroid fans who don't have a 3DS can also support the franchise.

It is funny that I got Into the Metroid games with Prime 3 on the Wii. I remember being amazed at the game and played it to death. I have very recently started playing Super Metroid on the 3DS Eshop. I would love to see this made into a netflix series. I read somewhere that director John Woo has the movie rights to this franchise. Maybe a good movie of this can be made, who knows.
This game was much needed especially after Other M. And this review shocked me because the other reviews I've seen said the end boss was a nice surprise and was a great addition.
SPOILERS!! The second end boss i disagree with. Ridley at the end was perfect. It shows that he wanted the baby metroid, the fight was brutal which is why he wants to get revenge. In super metroid ridley immediety steals the baby, like screw you! You messed me up on SR388, revenge bitch!
I get what they were going for, and it does make for a more instant transition from 2 to 3. But I also think it's more effective if he were absent for the entirety of 2, then the threat Samus thought was long dead reappears at the beginning of 3.
Jeremy Jahns SPOILER WARNING, READERS Since the final boss here is basically Meta Ridley, it makes sense that he is still alive and kicking, since Metroid II chronologically takes place after the Prime Trilogy, where Samus had her fair share of encounters with him. That said, I agree that his appearance is largely fanservice, although I think that in addition to him being used as a transition device for this game to lead into Super, I bet they also just wanted to throw him in so that he could be reintroduced to newer players, yet again marking the big return of Metroid, and of course, Samus herself!
I'm still in the process of finishing it and I'm loving it immensely. My only gripe is the lack of a scan visor. After the Prime series made that way of reading lore fun I just assumed it would be added. But after leaving the ship, starting to descend and finding that one body of the marine, I was so sad that I couldn't scan.
I was so excited when they announced this game! I played Metroid 2 so much as a kid and this remake didn't disappoint. There are so many nods to the original game: map design, enemy placement, power up locations, all of them sending nostalgia thrills down my spine as I played. My only real complaints come from two parts very late in game where I felt the game simply doesn't give you enough information to work with. Those bits aside, I had a blast playing this game!
i’ve been playing this game since i picked it up on launch day, and i’ve found myself in the same ‘predicament’ as you; i can’t put it down. within 24 hour of beating it, i started my ng+/hard mode play through. not sure if i’m making better time, but i’m certainly enjoying it just as much the second playthru! regarding story, i’m half-hoping Prime 4 takes place after Fusion just so we have a continuation of the story confirmed, but maybe alludes to events that can be more directly explored in a 2D? either way, the first lady of gaming is back and kicking more ass than ever!

This is one of the few 3DS games where I played with the 3D turned on because HOLY CRAP the environments in 3D look incredible and add a lot of depth to the atmosphere.

Hey I used the save states in the first Metroid through my Famicom classic. Only downside smaller controller. You can say it breaks the game but I still drew a map. I might go nuts if I don’t look at a map at this point though. I got through the necessary stuff before Motherbrain. I might need to double check that.. (there isn’t a fake Ridley right? I beat him much faster than Kraid who looks like a tricked out Bowser in the original game) but.. yeah the map is a last resort if I cannot figure something out or if I want to 100% the game that badly.
I so agree with the point about Floor Traps when it comes to other games in the series. The ones in Metroid Fusion caught me off guard, where I activated a Floor Trap in an E Tank room and then taken to the room where Nightmare awaits. There was another one where I was trying to get one of the items in Sector NOC so I could 100% it, but then the Floor Trap took me down a screen and I don't recall having a way back up except for going through the Restricted Zone and then being forced to talk to Adam AI, he looks all the Recharge Room doors in all Sectors so I can't go back to NOC until I beat the game and Adam unlocks those Recharge Room doors. I hope Samus Returns is nothing like that in terms of Floor Traps.

Metroid has been one of my favorites for a long time and Return of samus for the gameboy was my first game in the series. I too have always wondered what takes place after Fusion and as we await Prime 4 I am really excited thanks to this full on remake of a beautiful childhood memory of when I thought I was a badass killing alien parasites.

SPOILER!!!!! Bro come on. This game has the best Ridley boss battle period. It was a little bit out of place, but definitely worth it. He is called Proteus Ridley in this game. Named after the early greek sea-god who is known for his adaptibility and versatility, just like Ridley who keeps surviving and coming back. So I can't consider that a con (even though it's a bit of a cop out). They even gave him pieces of armor, instead of him being naked. Now he actually looks like a space pirate instead of a regular monster. And on top of that, the baby Metroid helps you out in this fight, so you actually get a stronger bond with it.
Yeah having no Shine Spark was a bit unfortunate :(. But it was to be expected as the orginal didn't have it either. We have the Powerbomb Shine Spark though. that's good enough for me.
I'm playing he game now and love it. My only gripe that I have with it that not a lot of reviewers have mentioned so far is the lack of diversity in enemies. I wish they would have added more than just the flying bat thing and the other very common creatures that pop up in every area. Other than that, a solid game so far.

If you have a pc you should play AM2R which is a fan remake of metroid 2 and is highly praised.

I am not a fan of Nintendo games....PC gamer here, but......hell, Jeremy can review pretty much anything. Keep it up.Big fan.

SPOILER!!!!! Bro come on. This game has the best Ridley boss battle period. It was a little bit out of place, but definitely worth it. He is called Proteus Ridley in this game. Named after the early greek sea-god who is known for his adaptibility and versatility, just like Ridley who keeps surviving and coming back. So I can't consider that a con (even though it's a bit of a cop out). They even gave him pieces of armor, instead of him being naked. Now he actually looks like a space pirate instead of a regular monster. And on top of that, the baby Metroid helps you out in this fight, so you actually get a stronger bond with it.
Yeah having no Shine Spark was a bit unfortunate :(. But it was to be expected as the orginal didn't have it either. We have the Powerbomb Shine Spark though. that's good enough for me.

I'm playing he game now and love it. My only gripe that I have with it that not a lot of reviewers have mentioned so far is the lack of diversity in enemies. I wish they would have added more than just the flying bat thing and the other very common creatures that pop up in every area. Other than that, a solid game so far.
