- Metroid Dread (Nintendo Switch) is an excellent return for the classic franchise. Here's why I love it and why I think all of the gameplay elements and new tweaks work perfectly together.

Samus was absolutely oozing confidence in every animation. She was so unapologetically badass.
Fo' sho! Still don't see why those scenes are at 30fps though. Hate going from 60 to 30.
@@JorgeMartinez-dp3im its probably hand animated(?) since animating at 60 is not exactly great or it could be motion capture and the 30 fps is just a stylistic choice for a more animated look
@@Hiyukifootstool it's most likely due to the hardware not being able to push 60 fps during the cutscenes. Also you can't hand draw 3d animation.
@@TruTrae What about times without motion capture? There was no 3D animation at all? You can animate by hand like you can draw 2D by hand.
The intro to the Kraid fight is so badass. And you bet I watched it multiple times cause I got my ass handed to me in that fight.
This game was the perfect difficulty for me. Harder games I have to stop and come back, but here I could keep progressing steadily until I beat it
I Love Megaman Xtreme 1 and 2!2 was My First Megaman Game! Now I have A GBC Gameshark!I Equip 4 Customizer Parts On Armored X And Zero!ABSOLUTE POWER!They Might Beat Samus Together!
Thats why I still haven't beat Sekiro, its a great game im just not good enough beat the final boss. I agree Dread is a perfect difficulty.
I almost treated boss fights and EMMI zones like a rogue-like, I died in most of them up to a dozen times but I would progress a little further in the fight each encounter until I ultimately won - great difficulty setting for me personally as well.
They give you just enough items and clues for you to have some fun challenge while not making the game too easy or absurdly difficult. If you play the game again after beating it, you will be familiar with all the tech and the bosses won't be that difficult, you could say that you become as experienced as Samus is.
This is why I quit Blasphemous. Shit's unforgiving.
I loved this game so much. Learning the patterns of bosses felt so good, (Like I truly felt like I was learning) and having to experiment with different things to learn that you can get through a phase quicker felt so satisfying. I can’t even begin to say how many screenshots I took lmao. And like the suit designs just look incredible! Especially the last one holy did it look sick!
Metroid dread is my game of the year, it was a blast. I usually dont get hooked on games but this got me, and I am not even nostalgic as dread is my entry into the series. Though played lots of other metroidvanias, but this game show why Samus is the queen. I got stuck like maybe 3 times, and yah all the main bosses were really cool, sub bosses def harder.
This is the very first Metroid game I’ve ever played and I loved it so much I bought a gameboy advanced and Metroid Fusion and Metroid Zero Mission immediately after beating dread.
And how do they hold up
Dread is fantastic, love the controls, audio, sound fx, and visuals. Love the series since the beginning. But this one, just brings together so many awesome ideas. Challenging, yet mastery, is worth it. Love the replayability as well.
Metroid fusion got me into the franchise and genre and Dread is so damn good when everything clicks for ya. Definitely my game of the year.
This was my first Metroid game and one of my first MetroidVanias. Honestly? I’m hooked. I’m all in.
I never got stuck in a room (especially not Jaffe Room 😅) as the game told me how to progress if I met a dead end, and the game MASSIVELY railroads you (I wouldn’t say handholds like some) so that you always know where to go.
Game takes you to a new world, you get a new ability and it loops you back toward the transport system? Go back to the world you were in before; your new power will unlock a pathway there to progress. Come across a teleportal? Use it; that’s where you need to go.
The game also tells you what’s behind certain doors before you enter them whether it’s an E.M.M.I. door, you can see the heat/cold emanating from the room, it has a missile cover = upgrade or a big black worm thing = boss.
I never found the bosses to be too brutal either, even the final boss has very easy-to-learn tactics that just felt so, so, so fun to pull off.
I think you can definitely see the places the budget was stretched thin, but I absolutely ADORE this game. I’m just in my third playthrough after a 100% 14 hour run and a sub 4 hour run, now I’m on a hard sequence break run and it feels SO weird, but so much fun.
Hope y’all are loving the game and if you’re not I hope you find an awesome game that makes you smile soon! ❤️🙌
Those boss counters made her look so badass. I was excited whenever I saw a yellow glow. Difficulty wasn’t super bad. At worst I’d step away, do something else, then I’d come back and kill the boss almost flawlessly. Now I’m doing all the speed boost puzzles and having a frustrating blast haha.
That counter scene when you fight Experiment Z57 made me wonder what a Metrod movie would look like, and now I want one.
@@moondawwg That’s the one I always think of. It’s been my favorite.
@@moondawwg That one was badass, but I think my favorites was the phase transitions on the final boss. The way Samus moves around the boss is just so fluid and precise it is amazing.
This is the first metroid games Ive played since I was a child Its great been loving it also love your content man keep up the good work!!!!
I'm loving Dread so much, It's my second Metroid game. I'm really close to the end, and I feel the same as you on how I progressed, never really got stuck, and that the game trains you well. The map is super detailed and helped a ton. I don't really play metroidvania games ever, but this game definitely has me excited for the next 2D Metroid. Hopefully they'll be released more frequently!
I beat this game twice and LOVE the hell out of it. Its a joyous journey just going from one place to another. Learning an area, the floorplan, the color schemes of travel, the interactive way you come across different enemies and best ways to defeat them, there's so many things this game has to offer. I got lost the first playthrough like many and didnt know where to go or what to do cause I never played Metroid a lot. But with youtube walkthroughs all over lets me see exactly where needed to go from where I was stuck and see where I needed to go to understand the game better. The more I progressed the more even greater my joy was and this game isn't really hard, it's just got a learning curve everyone will have to pick up on and once it clicks... oh boy it's awesome. This game is gorgeous and cleverly designed as well and probably the number 1 game next to Breath of the Wild that I can pick up later in the future and just enjoy myself with another playthrough.
The genre really hits the spot for me, and the focus on consistent bosses that were 100% avoidable was a huge plus for me. It's one of the things I love about the Souls series, where you can beat the game as a level 1, because it's all about mechanics and execution. I did find a couple fights quite challenging at first, but quickly was able to find my own ways to overcome them. The freedom in combat really caught me off guard and it left me open to trying crazy things that often worked. I was really hoping a new Prime game was coming soon, but honestly I'm glad this came first. Dread was a kickass, solid experience. It was compelling enough for me to 100% my first run at around 12 hours. Not sure if that's good, but it was a blast. I did have to completely explore around the end of the first area to realize I had to shoot out a wall in the second area to progress, but it felt pretty natural and I was back in the flow pretty quick. Glad you enjoyed it and can't wait to see Metroid Prime 4!
Man, I got stuck for like an hour and then realized ADAM literally told me where to go. Felt like an absolute dumb-ass.
Same here lol 🤦🏾♂️
Lol I always get stuck at the dumbest parts on games too
Was it when dude drained the water?
@@WebbanationX Yes it was lol!
@@JorgeMartinez-dp3im you know what happened? You were so use to him regurgitating bullsheeit you already knew, when he finally gave you something useful, you ignored da FAWK out it. Understandable 🤣
Samus has Big Mandalorian energy. Or I guess The Mandalorian has Samus Aran energy
I loved Metroid Dread! When I picked it up I could not put it down. It's a short game, but so so so sweet. It's a challenging game, but so satisfying when you get over those humps. Great experience.
Love it so far. Got stuck in one spot where I wasn't sure what blocks to shoot. The bosses are hard as are the mini bosses, but you learn* a little bit with each death and come back strong.
Good good stuff, worth the wait and worth full price IMHO. 👍
I keep going between this and super metroid. I've loved the series for such a long time. My favorite part is the fact that they're never a walk in the park.
I got stuck hard after finding the grapple, I just started sweeping the map and found so many items I had passed up. Been loving it so far though.
Metroid Dread is my favorite Metroid game. Hands. Down. I’ve been a lover of the series for a long time (since Metroid II on the Gameboy, though I never got very far as a kid). I re-fell in love with the series with Metroid Prime and I have played EVERY Metroid game since.
Metroid Dread captures the essence of what a Metroid and is and can be. The loneliness, the puzzling environment, the upgrades. It all works to it’s benefit. I got lost throughout the game, welcomingly 2-3 times on my first playthrough. I struggled through the majority of the major boss fights, and many of the smaller mini-basses, at least until I figured out the trick. The final boss fight is the best boss in the entire 2D series (another couple of bosses hold the top 5 spots for me).
Since my first playthrough. I’ve played, and beat both on Hard mode (under 4 hours) and normal mode (under 3 hours), and am currently playing through it a 4th time on Hard to get 100%.
Jake, I want to thank you for all the quality content that you, and the gameranx crew put out. You are phenomenal content creators who should be proud of the channel(s) you’ve created, and the success you’re seeing on RUclips.
A loyal fan/fellow YT streamer (hobby, not for work),

What gave me goose bumps, was in certain cutscenes. She was walking and charging her blaster at the same time!!!!!! My God that was Fire!!!
So damn cool
It's freakin good. At first I was hesitant to buy it because of the game length. However, I'm glad I took the dive to play Dread as my first Metroidvania game I played.
Well, the genres named after Metroid and Castlevania SotN .
Personally I'm happy you enjoyed it.
Such a great game
What's wrong with the "game length"?
Samus feels lethal, but only as lethal as I can make her, and I feel like that's why despite dying so many times I never felt like the game screwed me. It always felt like "oh crap well maybe next time if I try this..." And I'd always get better and better every attempt. How badass Samus is is how badass I can make her and that's a damn good feeling to have.
I agree with you on the difficulty. I'm also the kind of gamer that likes to just experience the story, and while there were some difficult bosses there wasn't anything I couldn't beat after 30 minutes or so and figuring out their patterns. It just felt like the Metroid I've always loved.
Sequence Breaking in this game is so good. Highly recommend stuff like Boss insta kills and early upgrades it really changes the pace of the game. For example Early 👏Gravity 👏 Suit 👏. Also I would describe the game not as hard or difficult but definitely Challenging. The difference being Challenging has you learn and get better to overcome the challenge while being hard implies a difficult task to overcome no matter what skill level you’re at.
First Metroid game for me and absolutely cannot put it down. My switch has been collecting dust the last few months until this one came out. It's been a pleasant surprise and made me wanna get on some of the older games. Going for Super Metroid once I finish this off!
My DUDE. I’ve been waiting for this one!
This is the first 2d Metroid game I’ve ever played, I’ve mostly stuck to the prime series, but boy am I glad I tried it, this games rules
Try Metroid Fusion! Definitely worth, super fun.
it's my first Metroid game, and it is epic in every way
Love this game, everything about it is so perfect, definitely deserve to be GOTY
I'm rarely such a completionist but I'll take any reason I can to keep playing this game. That's why I got 100% items before beating it and why I'm replaying on hard mode under 4 hours
Game is my first Metroid game ever and im so happy i did play it. I think this game is really awesome.
Love to hear it!
Nice talk, I have checked out some reviews now and Im astonished as how none even to avoid spoilers (if any) do not shout the super reference on the final boss, is like Metroid francise saying "you took something for me and did something amazing, here is my small and subtle homage to you"
This was the first ever Metroid game I’ve ever played and I absolutely loved it from beginning to end. In my first run I just kept exploring everything to no end and it was fantastic. Since then I’ve replayed it like 5 times already lol.
I agree 100% I was shocked when people were doggin it for the difficulty for me it was like each boss fight was a puzzle/ rhythm and every time I beat one I felt like a badass and I’m not one for difficulty I usually beat my games on normal and I’m definitely not a souls type guy lol. Playing super over the summer was a big help too I guess cause I felt right at home here
I love it so much. I've played through it twice and can't wait for more.
First play through you experience the Dread feeling.
By the end of your first run, you feel empowered, badass, and ready for anything.
Once youve 100%'ed your first run, you understand the controls so well that you feel comfortable enough to wonder "how does speed running work?"
Your inevitable hard mode play through you cant even tell why its called hard mode for the first half, youll be beating bosses first try left and right.
What other game builds a player's confidence so quickly within the first 8-12 hour run through?
GAME OF THE YEAR: Definitely, The best 2D entry in the genre, I absolutely loved it.
The bosses feel like the perfect difficulty. Sure, I died a ton, but I enjoyed every moment of learning how to dodge their various attacks.
absolutely my game of the year!! loved how the always nudge you just abit so you knew where to go.. love letter to old games
Just beat it! Wow, what a game, I'm very impressed that it feels super new, but also super like those older Metroid games still. It's a freaking great game!
I think it’s a Metroid thing. Never got Stuck on this game and enjoyed every minute. 10/10 imo. First game I’ve beat in a while.
Dread is easily my favorite game of 2021!
So this is the first metroid game I've actually played, but it's far from the the first metroidvania I've played. Honestly, I think this might be my new favorite of the genre, and it's taking that title from Symphony of the Night, so that's pretty impressive.
Also this game has the coolest style of Samus's suit by far. Fight me if you disagree.
Yeah it really is the coolest looking suit. I wish you could change back to it later in the game
I’ve only gotten stuck twice so far, and I’ll die to the bosses quite a bit. Unlike souls games, or other games that feel too hard, it’s not frustrating, just fun
Metroid dread is one of my new favorite games of all time. I absolutely loved everything in this game.
This was technically my first Metroid game but far from my first Metroidvania. I didn't get lost a whole lot and the bosses definitely kicked my ass a lot but they're so fair you can avoid everything if you're good enough. I think my favorite boss was Experiment Z-57
Props to Mercury Steam
I knew I was gonna like this game, but not this much. I think this is one of my favorite games ever. From the gameplay to the difficulty, to the environments… It’s just an amazing experience. Loved Samus through the whole game and how badass she was. But the highlight is definitely the difficulty. I was kinda “stuck” with one of the bosses but it felt so rewarding once I defeated it and that’s the thing about it. Once you get the hang of it and finally get through the boss and all that stuff its just *chef’s kiss*. The story is slow but effective (specially that ending). Mercurystream did a really good job with Samus Returns but Metroid Dread is just amazingly good that I honestly think it’s gonna be difficult to top this. Love Metroid games but this one is probably my favorite. Now let me keep playing while I wait for Metroid Prime 4…
I look at games the same way; I like a story with some challenge, but not a frustrating *brutal* challenge. I have a nerve problem that affects my fingers, so precision button mashing isn't something I handle well. On Metroid Zero Mission, for example, I loved the game, got thru it no problem, but Mother Brain & the missiles coming at me all at once was a bit much, so I never beat it. But on this the controls are tighter & I am getting thru it easier. This sets you up for the challenge nicely. Loving it.
My first play through took around 14 hours. Now I can beat it on hard in about 3.5 hours. It was pretty hard to beat the first time through.
Same exact times for me
Metal Gear Solid and Tony Hawks Underground are literally two of my favorite games ever.
Also, Dread is fantastic. Im not even the biggest Metroid fan, but this is easily my favorite game ive played all year.
:)
I wish I could get into the prime series, cause I really do love these 2D metroid games.
I loved the kraid boss fight. It had flair, great difficulty balance and great art.
Cheers jake
I appreciate the honesty and humility given. I'm the same way with games. In fact, I normally don't find myself engrossed in many games cause I would refer to myself as a baby gamer. Lately I've found myself playing on easy or story mode more often.
But it does help hearing this kind of talk from someone as well known in the gaming market (at least for me) as yourself, Jake. It also helps playing online with my friends who help me improve my skills.
I’ve gotten stuck once or twice, but only because I had to go to sleep and then work, so I kept forgetting where I was going.
I wasn't planning on picking this up any time soon because I'm already playing Final Fantasy 14 and New World, but I wanted to pre-order Mario Party Superstars and decided to throw Metroid Dread into the cart as well. This is my first Metroid game (but not my first Metroidvania) and your Before You Buy video (and now this) definitely helped convince me to dip my toes into it. Thanks for the great content Jake!
Haven't had the time recently to dive back into Metroid Dread again but when I was playing it I was going hard into it. I did a few sequence breaks, I got every art for 100% completion and time bonuses, I've been keeping up with the community and I've even been getting the idea of speedrunning it. I've been wanting a game like this again for ages... And it's finally here.
I've been playing Samus Returns and this looks a lot like that. It's kind of tough, like the enemies steal enough health if you aren't super careful that it becomes time consuming to get through areas, especially considering that you have to backtrack a ton, but yeah, it's not so hard that I want to throw in the towel. It's not Dark Souls or whatever. It's still fun. It's challenging, but still fun. I also remember how Prime 2: Echoes was a pain in the butt, because you had to stay in the echo zones a really long time to recharge health (bubbles of light while every other thing sucked health from you, too much difficulty and waste of time). Such a waste of time, yet I still did it. But, Samus Returns was a good return to the Metroid franchise I love. I started on Super Metroid and also had some Gameboy Advance Metroid and loved the hell out of them. I've played every single Metroid game since Super Metroid, except this one, and I can't wait to try it
I feel like this is the most fun I’ve had in a game this year. The difficulty was hard but in a good way. That is weird for me to say because I don’t like dark souls and other punishing types of games that just stress me out. Returnal would be on par with this, at least for me, if only it didn’t start you at the beginning and instead had checkpoints. The way the checkpoints in this game let me continue to bash my face against a boss until I figured out how to win kept me feeling encouraged and accomplished. It didn’t punish me by making me walk across the entire map just to get back to a boss. I knew I would die to new bosses but I tried my best each time and felt so much joy as I got further and further along to beating them. I just beat the final boss today and I really didn’t want the game to end. I just can’t emphasize enough how great playing this made me feel.
You've convinced me to try out my first Metroid game :)
I watched a playthrough of this and, not being a Metroid vet myself, I constantly wondered if I would have progressed as smoothly as he had. Granted, he had a chat room he was trying to ignore but some of that backseating would slip through so he didn't have to think as hard as he would've had he been playing by himself, but it seemed like even though the maps in each area were sprawling, the game did a pretty good job in guiding you in the right direction while allowing you to flex your brain muscle every now and then
I wouldn't mind picking it up at one point, somewhere down the line, but a part of me wishes I'd never played or seen a Metroid game played and then jumped into this so I could teach myself how these games work and see how far I'd get
I got stuck like 3-4 times in regards to navigation, and I found enemy/boss difficulty to be challenging but fair. And of course it just felt like a genuine Metroid all the way through that pretty much felt like both a love letter and a new beginning. This all around was just the perfect game that this series really needed.
Picked it up. Excited to play it after I finally finish Skyward Sword.
Ok mercury steam... now let's make a sequel to castlevaina symphony of the night!!!!!!!!
LET'S GO!!
Or just a new Castlevania In general, it's been way too long.
GOTY is going to be between Returnal and Dread
About 1/4 into my hard mode run. Game slaps
Metroid 2 on GB was my first video game ever so it was really nice to come full circle and get a 2D Metroid game on the switch.
The two people in "real life"; Jake's Wife and their cat.
I only got stuck once right when you first enter Darion near the begining of the game, but apart from that had no other issues. The bosses are intense and so are the EMMIs but the good thing about the game is that when you die you don't go back to the reload station but just to the adjacent area next to the nightmare boss lol. That makes it allot easier as I had multiple trys on most of the bosses. This game is hard but it also is very rewarding. Every step felt like I achieved greatness. Game of the year for me so far :D .. Yhatzee would not agree lol
This game, man.... easily GOTY. It's my first time playing Metroid and it couldn't be better. Thing's so well-paced, so rewarding. I caught myself nervous, heart-pouding, feeling some parts were a huge pain in the ass, I felt like shit but then I'd think "they wouldn't make this thing impossible, i CAN do it" and I'd repeat and pay attention, and progress, die, progress some more... and when I took those suckers down, I felt like the most badass person in the galaxy, just like Samus. Kudos for the vid, always nice to hear from ya ♥️
I 100% agree with the difficulty analysis
Difficulty is a mixed bag 4 me. While i haven't played this 1 yet i love some hard games like Returnal and Cuphead, where there seems to b an emphasis on fun but i don't vibe with Dark Souls who seem to be hard for hards sake
yeah it's an interesting topic. man I might do a whole video just talking about hard games and game design and stuff
@@JakeBaldino thats a dope video idea
This game definitely isn't like dark souls where it is just convoluted for the sake of being obtuse
@@JakeBaldino do it
@@chovymasters7577 No need to put down dark souls.
As far as the invisible blocks holding people back, I think this comes from people who’ve never played Metroid and think it’s gonna be some crazy thing.
To me dread isn’t easy but it isn’t hard too and I’m the type to play games for the story not really the difficulty (not a lot of time to die a million times) though I died in dread more than I care to admit it kept me coming back for more I think it’s fantastically made (first time playing a Metroid game)
there's a demo out now on the eShop.
This is the first game I’ve finished multiple times back to back in years.
It just feels so good to play.
You still put some of the best gaming content on RUclips Jake. Keep up the good work mate 😊
I'm jumping between Metroid dread and disco Elysium right now, both are so amazing
Man, I really need to make time for that one...
@@JakeBaldino it's like cozying up to a murder mystery that I'm the star of. I'm honestly blown away. Been a fan for a couple years now buddy, thanks for all the great stuff!
It's a really well balanced game that teaches you how to get better and it's very rewarding as you progress. It's amazing. 💗
I could be way off but it seems like the devs may have gotten a little inspiration from ID and doom eternal. The addition of flash step has made movement in combat feel incredible especially in boss fights.
I've been floating videos seeing different creator's takes. Yours is great!
Thanks!
I haven’t played a Metroid game since the og nes and just started dread and I love it so far
I barely have time to play, so im looking for that perfect time to get it. Because like i usually have to do, i dont like to leave games unfinished for way too long or then ill get lost. So maybe by Christmas i might get it, spring break, or just that trusty ol summer
The way this game encouraged exploration and getting to those areas by manipulating my traversal options was so satisfying. This is good game design
I have not got the chance to play it yet, but I am very excited to get my hands on it!
I’m 26 and the NES was also my first system. We are kindred spirits my fellow grandpa millennial.
I absolutely love this review. Jake, you are so honest and I love it and that's what keeps me coming back.
I've been playing through Metroid Fusion and there have been so many instances where I've gotten completely stuck because I didn't see the invisible destructible block or wall or whatever. It's great to hear that this game is far more balanced and teaches the player. I can't wait to play it. :)
Dude, I agree about the difficulty thing. I honestly don't have time to mess around with one boss for thirty years while all my other games and life atrophy around me. I play games for the experience and escapism and because I love them. I've totally missed out on Metroid, but I can't wait to jump into Dread.
I never got lost, refreshing for a metroidvania, I got stuck once (I knew where I was supposed to go, but couldn't find the way forward), and bosses were awesome - except end boss, which felt like a superweird high difficulty spike. I mean, the whole game took me 7 hours blind, but with the caveat that I had to succumb for some tips at end boss - and even with those, it took me 2 hrs to learn and beat it.
Other than that best metroid game I've played.
Dread was excellent. Probably one of the harder Metroids, but it managed to be difficult without being frustrating. It's super forgiving and gives you lots of check points so it's easy to jump right back into the action and get a little better with every attempt. Loved it, maybe my favourite Metroid. (of the ones I've played so far)
You're right about one thing: difficulty is definitely subjective. I always like a challenge, there are certain things that I just really cannot put up with. I understand why everybody loves Hollow Knight. that game is just beautiful, But in terms of difficulty, I had an easier time playing Metroid Dread than I did Hollow Knight, And Metroid Dread is pretty freaking hard!
That God dang purple bug… You know the one.
Metroid Dread is either my game of the year or second to Axiom Verge 2 and one of my two favourite metroidvanias along with the aforementioned.
I love this game so much, I've already started a sixth playthrough!
I got stuck fighting Ravenbeak. Like bad. Took me all night. When I finally beat it the sun had started to rise. I also love super hard games, I’m a masochist like that
Game is very good. Only problem I ran into was with the last boss. It wasn’t too hard. It just wasn’t clear to me if I was hurting him during Phase 2. Considering you need to trigger certain events or the bosses just go on a constant loop, they should have made that distinction clearer (imo)
Now we just need Metroid Prime 4
Brosif!!! Oh my how amazing this game is buddy!! I was 11 when the original came out and when 45 year old me thinks of the original NES game...this game is what the original looks like in my mind..does that make sense??? This game brought all of the raw emotions i felt as an eleven year old immediately!! I was so worried they would F this up and it turned at better than i could have imagined!!
Also on a side note i freaking love how awkward the transportation scenes between areas are with the awkward camera angles of Samos....not sure why but it def makes me laugh every time haha
I'll try to play it with DualSense... I played Metroid II on GameBoy, can't wait to get into it.
