The entire Panipat campaign right from the beginning was biggest ever military blunder in Maratha history. Since this is the only channel on youtube which seems to have taken a pretty unbiased and most practical way to study and analyse actual historical documents I would like to request you to please look into reasons why Maratha force was carrying so many non combats (bazaar bunage) when it left Pune at first place ? just a couple of years before Paninat war Raghunathrao himself had lead a pretty long and successful campaign in north India and he was not carrying any non combats with him, then how come thousands of non combats were allowed to go on Panipat campaign ? you cant blame Peshwa Nanasaheb for this mistake as he didnt forced Raghunathrao to take on so many non combats with him in previous campaign, so was it because of too much arrogance and overconfidence of Sadashivrao Bhau ? we know that Jat king Suraj Mal/Holkar had suggested Bhau to left all his non combats back in his territory while fighting force may march ahead to take on Durrani forces but Bhau refused thanks to his too overconfidence again ? Maratha forces moving northward on Panipat campaign was more than 5 times slower than that of lightening fast Maratha cavalry lead by Peshwa Bajiro I, surely this Maratha force was not the traditional one which always have defeated much stronger enemies thanks to swift movement and carrying crucial surprised attacks on enemy forces where its most vulnerable. They lost their speed, and couldn't even use element of surprise or cut off Duraani's supply lines when needed all thanks to this huge burden of non combats, traditional Maratha war tactics became useless when most of the time and energy of the force spent on protecting such large number of non combats rather than harassing and cutting off supply lines of enemy forces which were traditional Maratha war tactics against much stronger enemies, Peshwa Bajirao I, had used same tactics throughout all his wars where every single time his enemy forces was much larger than that of Maratha army.
In the hindsight we can say many things..
But main reason for defeat was lack of modernisation in maratha army..
1.Ibrahim Khan gardi was no match for French artillery commander bussie.
Busie had successfully used Gaul formation for attack on Marathas but due to numerical superiority they had defeated nizams .
2. Also variety of Cannons used by abdali forces for attack on martahas tilted battle in there favour ..
3. numerical superiority of abdlali forces and number of allies they had acted as force multiplier...
4.Earlier campaigns of bajirao peshwa 1
Were raiding techniques which were useful if u can have terrain advantage but in panipat they were on plains which eliminated there advantage..
5. financial mismanagement .
earlier campaigns by ragunath Rao on North where they famously got victory on attock fort had bankrupted the maratha treasury greatly reducing there capacity to run the management and modernize the army....
It is mentioned by nanasaheb that mismanagement of campaigns and improper administration within Punjab and other regions beyond delhi had created vaccum for abdalis entry..
5. Strategic blunder by malahrao holkar
To spare najib Khan inspite of peshwa orders.
All in all these were the main reasons I feel .
For later campaigns on North after panipat Marathas had greatly modernised the army m under French general de boignat .now they had implement European war tactics with cannons wich would be decisive in victory against rohillas ,Mughals and nizam.

Wow! Would be fortunate to see this painting in reality. Najeeb convinced abdali,shuja to fight under the name of "muslim religion khatre mein hai! Ie jihad else abdali wasnt really interested in coming upto delhi nor was shija inclined to disturb his peace with the marathas. Sadly n shamefully, our hindu counterparts couldnt unite even for such reason of saving religion ,n marathas were left on their own. If only they had help/support from any of the other Indian kings history would have been different today. Yet, i dont consider they lost cos while returning back abdali entrusted the marathas with delhi n later on marathi's avenged their loss.

The TV series made by Sanjay Khan in 1993 'The great Maratha' on Mahadaji Shinde had a character 'Rale Khan' . Series claims that Rale Khan saved Mahadaji Shinde's life in Panipat & later on became the general of Shinde empire. Did Rale Khan really exist?
It was Rana Khan. He was an Important lieutenant of Mahadji Shinde. He is often referred to in documents as राणेखान भाई.

Please correct me if i am wrong but wasnt it sardar shinde who (before panipat) had a battle with najeeb where najeeb lost yet the shindes let him get off easily n alive by saying najeeb was his foster son? Najeeb to played along with this farce n promosed to be on maratha side forever yet broke his promise n created panipat? Shindes were supposed to have killed him,they had orders to do so from the Peshwa,but made a mistake of believing his conniving lies which later on snowballed into panipat war? If only he would have been killed as per orders, the snake would have never bitten back.
