In this week’s episode, we get to check out a national park that we have never visited before - Mesa Verde NP! And we were way off in our expectations. Has that ever happened to you? Let us know in the comments if you have ever visited a state or national park that was way better than you were anticipating!
We knew that we would love the history and seeing the villages and houses up close, but what we didn’t anticipate was how incredible the hikes in and out of the houses would be or how spectacular the drive into the park was! What an underrated place! We will definitely be booking more time in the area on our next trip through.
One thing we want to make sure you know before you visit Mesa Verde (since we didn’t) is that you need to book the tours to walk down into the houses online. Our tour was $2 per person. Be sure to check each tour on their website and book a time slot that works best for you!

I saw this as a child; however, I would love to go back and see it again.
So many people want to travel to Europe, and Asia to to sight see and totally disregard the U.S. The U.S., has so much history, and beauty to take in. I'm happy to see you stopped at Mesa Verde and took in the tour. There's so much to take in, and very little time to check out the area thoroughly. I prefer very small amount of people (or just my family) when taking tours. This way, I can take my time and enjoy my surroundings. I prefer the quiet in order to hear, and see things you wouldn't capture with a large group/tour. Beautiful area!
Small group tours (private tours) are nice, but the only way to tour the cliff dwellings at Mesa Verde is with a Ranger led tour. Larger groups, but not too large based on my experience.
I was visiting some friends in Durango and they suggested that I visit Mesa Verde. So I went over there expecting to spend an afternoon. I wound up spending that afternoon and the next 2 days going back. This place is a lot bigger and more interesting than you expect. Plus you have to be in shape, there was an overweight lady that had problems on the ladder, plus the elevation is about 8,000 feet and she had problems breathing. Not sure why they let her on the tour, but a few of us helped her and we all made it,

I've been to Mesa Verde a number of times since 1971 and have seen just about every area open to the public and a few places that aren't (we were with park rangers). I think Balcony House is my favorite place, though it involves some crawling and also climbing some tall ladders.
I’m handicapped so can never visit this place. But, I’ve always wanted to go!! Thank you so much for this. I enjoy living vicariously through y’all!!
There are many places up on the masa that you can go. this is a Government park it must be ADA lots of trails but you are right you can't go below in the mesa.
I have a VR (virtual reality) headset and I always say these would be great for people who just can't get to some of these places. While you may not be able to be there in person, the VR is so good, I am sure you will be amazed. I've had it for over a year and I still get surprised at some of the views.
This has been by far my very most favorite video you have done. I have wanted to visit this place for so long. You just thrown gasoline in my fire and desire to go even more.

Wow, what an incredible video highlighting some of the awesome things you can see in our country. My husband and I did a Harley Tour out west 20+ years ago. We were right at Mesa Verde National Park, I had not done a research on this park; all the tours were fully booked, so, we didn't go into the park. We were on a time constraint because we had rented a Harley and had a plane to catch in several days. This video makes me so sad to think we were so close to something so incredible to see live. Thanks for your video; so, I got to live that experience vicariously through your video.
And what is so amazing is that these amazing structures are still standing and what we build now doesn't last at all ... We sure need their knowledge .. so beyond beautiful

We were there about 2-3 weeks before you and we were able to spend the better part of a week to see the entire park. Stayed in the same campground.. what a nice stop on our journeys.

Mesa Verde is an awesome park! Some very cool history!
We did the same tour this past July on our way back to Ohio from Utah’s national parks. It was a great place to stop. We ended up staying in Durango because all of the campgrounds close to Mesa Verde were full. While we were there, we rode the steam train too.
1982, we did the tour with our 2 children, they still comment about climbing and the ladders.
Yellowstone came next.

We stayed at the same RV park when we visited Mesa Verde on two separate occasions. The thing that struck me, especially the first time we went was how far from the front gate the cliff dwellings you can tour are. As a fun fact, the ranger that gave you the tour was the same one that gave us the same tour two years ago.
When we visited Spruce House was available for us to tour. Museum was quite interesting also.
We are going to go back after there done with the construction on the second 1/2 of the park. We were bummed we missed the museum!
One of my favorite parks. The Cliff Palace wasn’t open when we were there. We toured the Balcony House. Definitely want to go back. Thanks for the video guys. Safe travels.

mesa verde is on my bucket list, there's another one on my list Gila cliff dwelling national monument in new mexico a little southwest of Mesa Verde; I just think it's amazing that people live on the side of a cliff
Hi! First time I have seen your channel. Enjoyed your trip to Mesa Verde and so glad you enjoyed it too!
I live in the 4 corners area and look out my windows everyday at Mesa Verde and the surrounding area. Believe me, you've only scratched the surface.! There are many ruins to visit in this area. Not just at Mesa Verde but all around the Montezuma Valley down below. It's a very interesting place to visit AND live!!

Mesa Verde is one of my favorite NP. There was no tour required to go into Spruce Tree House in 2015. It was about the only one you could walk on your own without ranger or reservation. There were rangers down there to answer any questions. We stayed right in the park campground with our 35ft class A and saw bears by the tunnel one late afternoon. the views of the mountain peaks are spectacular from the park.
While there are similar cliff dwellings at other locations, perhaps in terms of scale this is the best. Also you have the various facilities that come with being a N.P.
We loved Mesa Verde!! We were there the first week of July 2023 and stayed at that same RV park.. we loved it!! Definitely a must see!
My wife and I first visited Mesa Verde fifty years ago...the era of "before kids" and we, like you, were blown away by the uniqueness of the park among the other parks of the NP System. At that time when walking around on the flats above the cliff dwellings it was easy to spot broken pottery and pick it up for inspection. Don't know if it is still that way...we have never gone back for a second visit but the Mancas Valley is a beautiful area to visit in it's entirety.
I love you guys and that you really show us the details of places. I also love when you hang out at the camper and do stuff. I find both really useful and entertaining. You probably think we all find the "boring" stuff (to you) boring, but we don't. I think most of us like the family interaction and just camping. Corey, you are the best nature and landscape videographer hands down!

Oh wow! Just started watching your newest video about Mesa Verde. I was there in the mid-80s. As soon as I saw the ladder it all came back to me. I got out my photo album and found the same exact scenes that you are showing now. That's place is awesome! The next day we went to Durango and rose the train to Silverton. I got some great shots when on the train of the Animas river with the mountains in the background. A beautiful ride. Mike B.

Mesa Verde! I went on a field trip during a college course on Indigenous of the SW. We followed this up with Chaco Canyon. Before was up onto a Hopi mesa.
We went into a kiva up on the Hopi plateau. Hopis use them for religious ceremonies. It was still used so had a roof and we climbed down the ladder.
Too bad about the museum! It's amazing and so informative!

Wife and I were there pre- Covid . Walked around everywhere you did . No tours when we were there . Part of a loop trip from Lompoc California to Missouri and back . Also did first week in Albuquerque balloon festival…. Was a memorable trip
Whenever we visit a park that will take all day to see we take our portable grill and a cooler with food to cook while inside the park. Saves time by not having to go back to the trailer for lunch, and is much cheaper than buying lunch in the park.

My first visit was by air in a military H-60 Helicopter that was flown down the middle of the canyon in 1996. We were looking down at the people and they were looking up at us. My wife and I did the park in 2018 and she had a bad knee so she didn't walk down to the over look with me. When I went to go see, I went back to get her and told her she had to see it.
Mesa Verde is definitely on the bucket list. Such an amazing place. Safe travels.

When we went there several years ago, we were able to climb down a ladder into a kiva on our tour. I wished we had spent more time there also. It's interesting to see your tour, because we didn't get to see that when we were there. Great video of all the different dwellings!
Just a FYI. Here in Batesville Arkansas we are in the path of totality for the eclipse. The RV parks around us are either booked or booking quickly. There is a RV park that still has sites available, Brecks RV park. From my understanding they haven't raised their rates for the eclipse, unlike the other parks.
I am not affiliated in any way with Brecks RV park. I'm just letting other RVers know that we still have sites available.
When my wife and I were there last summer, we did that drive loop like you did after your tour and our 32 foot motorhome we wanted to do the cliff palace tour, but didn’t realize that you had to make reservations ahead of time, so we were not able to do that, but got some hiking in. There was another Road to take, but it was closed at the time, and my motorhome was too long so they would not allow me to go down that road anyways.
Spruce Tree House is currently undergoing stabilization and restoration where needed.
Several years ago, I was able to enter end photograph much of Spruce Tree House including entering and photographing inside the Kiva with the roof in it and the ladder sticking out.
It was quite the treat.
You should make plans to stay in the Farmington/Bloomfield area and make the drive to Chaco, another World Heritage Site and simply amazing. Aztec is also worth the stop and the Salmon Ruins.
Do not take the RV into Chaco unless you want it shaken apart by the 30 miles of washboard road in and out from Nagizzi.
The several Pueblo Ruins at Chaco and the story there of Fajada Butte is fascinating.

We were at Mesa Verde in October 2023. Had reservations for the Palace, but my body was not physically able to do it. 😢All my pictures are from the top. It was such an interesting place.
Montezuma's Castle in Arizona and Bandelier in NM are great too.
Last summer our family visited Mesa Verde while staying in Durango for the train ride. What an experience! I personally don't like the drive to Mesa NP though. Hair raising experience!
I can't wait to explore this part of the country. Moving from FL to CO soon!

We spent 5 days in Mesa Verde before that and did the cliff palace tour as well. It would have been so fun to meet you all. Question - how do you handle the NPS permit issue?
Anyone going watch for foothold in the rock walls. It was their security system .you had to go in correct footing or you were stuck.
we noticed the past few videos have been in national parks. Do you still have to apply for a permit, is it expensive, how much notice did you have to give, was it easy?
We have been there but did not have time to take a tour, this really makes us regret it!

Since the NPS has pretty much totally restricted videography in National Parks, including monetized You Tube channels, I'm curious if you got a permit to film? I've been to Mesa Verde and it is truly an amazing place.

Did you happen to ask if there's been any thought given by the NPS to hiring Pueblo descendants to guide the tours in order to put them in charge of stewarding their history? I'm not saying the NPS isn't doing it justice. I just think the tour would be richer if those whose ancestors lived there were telling their stories.

🎉Everyone needs to understand the importance of not touching and not removing starfish from the sea. The reason starfish die outside water is that they cannot breathe. This leads to carbon dioxide poisoning and ultimately asphyxiation. Another common cause of death is stress from handling them too much.

I love watching your videos. They are so well done, but why are you so far behind compared to other channels. Most channels have already put out their balloon festival videos months ago.
