  • @jdmather5755

    We were there I think a week after you guys.
    I’ll emphasize a few points.
    1. Arrive early. The parking fills up fast and then it is one car out - one car in. Check the entrance fee before you go. As I recall, it is expensive - but I have a senior pass so it was free.
    I wondered why all the cars parked out along the road - now I know, they were riding in on their bikes.
    2. If you are going to ride the tram it is best to make on-line reservation in advance. (You can do this while you wait in line for entrance into the park). One thing they could improve is the flow into the park. Expect to wait in (slow) line. Credit card payment if you don’t have a pass. I could be wrong, but as I recall they don’t accept cash. You don’t want to wait in that slow line only to find out that you need a credit card (or national parks pass).
    3. If you are a senior be sure to declare that for your tram ticket (separate from park fee). Substantial discount for seniors.
    4. No dogs (alligator food). They will question you if you have a service pet.

    FUN FACT Google:
    The alligator's running speed is a little slower than the average human, but they're known to sprint as fast as 35 mph.

    Nice video, we have alligators here where I live. If you leave them alone they will leave you alone, and their eyes do glow in the dark. Got to watch them around ponds on the golf courses.

    Alligator eyes when hit with light are fire engine red. I’m not sure about crocodile eyes. I wintered in Naples for 5 years & thoroughly enjoyed my trips to the Everglades. I too was amazed at all of the natural beauty. Enjoy!

    I ride at Shark Valley 2x/week. The big white birds seen at the tower are Common or Great Egrets. Both names are used. The tower was built in 1965 as an observation tower and replaced the fire tower. It is the same design as the Clingman’s Dome tower in Great Smoky Mountains NP. The croc that you saw at about Mile Marker 6 is the medium sized one of the 3 in this part of the park. Looking around from the tower to the south is the Marjorie Stoneman Douglas Federal Wilderness Area, 1.3 million acre and the largest federal wilderness area east of the Rockies. Yup, very little elevation change - only 13” over 7 miles from the tower to the Visitor Center but when the wind is blowing hard in your face it is a 7 mile uphill ride! Nice video and a very good perspective on a truly unique place.

    My wife and I lived in Miami for 25 years. Our home was about 15 miles away from the eastern side of the park. All 4 of our children (born in Miami) we would take to Everglades National Park which was exciting for them. We also would often stop along Tamiami Trail (known formerly as Hwy 41) on our way to Bonita Beach (close to Ft. Myers’s on the Florida west coast) to visit my parents and stop to watch the alligators near the bank of the road “sunning” themselves. We now live outside of Atlanta, Georgia and the children are grown up and married with children of their own, but as I am writing this and watching the video we just happen to be back in Miami to our old stomping grounds with our eldest daughter and husband and their two small children. I reminded my daughter you know you’re in Miami when you see the Geckos climbing the wall of your home and the palm trees. They used to catch them when they were young kids and then dangle them off their ear lobes. Strange it was but kids do strange things. Great memories though. Sounds like you’re having fun in the sunshine state!

    You guys hit every highlight, spot on!!!! This is my favorite park ever!!! grew up in South Florida, and we would go to Shark Valley every weekend and bike. I love, love, love, love this park.
    Another amazing park is Bird Rookery Swamp Trail in Naples Florida. This is non paved, rough terrain, about 12 miles. It is tough, but beautiful. If you want to see gators, this is the park. They will be on the way, you have to be careful not to bike over them. We have even seen river otters. No rangers, no restrooms on the trail, no vending machines, it is raw, you are on your own, so you have to go prepared.
    I am now on central Florida and have not found anything like those parks. Thanks for taking me back in memory lane! Loved this video!!!!

    Glad you went to Shark Valley! We loved biking it. However, my husband did get chased on his ebike by a large gator. Kind of scary! You're not quite right about the passes though. One card will still get you and your family or others in your vehicle into National Parks. The only time you need a card per person is when you are entering separately. My pass is all we ever use. If for some reason I went in without my husband and he wanted to come in later, he would need one. If he's with me, we're both able to go in with my pass. That includes the walk-in entry at Zion if you're camping in Watchman. Save your money next year and just buy one. You'll be fine since you're always entering together. We'll add 4 more this fall. That'll be 42 of the 63 for us.

    Flamingos and pelicans are at the other end of the park. It also has the newest biggest visitor center at Flamingo. Royal palm is the best boardwalk , magical. It is closest to Coe visitor center. Flamingo center has naturalist led boat rides.
    Airboats are banned from Everglades They are destructive and drive away wildlife. Boats are run just outside, and now must stay on regular routes

    I live near Tampa. I have gators in my yard! 2,000,000 gators in FL.! There is a gator in a lake in Lakeland that is 23 feet long. The state measures their length with a laser. No one wants to go near it.

    How did the bikes fit in the new truck?

    • @IreneIronTravels
      @IreneIronTravels  2 месяца назад +1

      They fit! But, definitely better in the Ford with the smaller hitch and extra bed length. In the RAM they kinda sit half on top of the hitch and half on the mat. But, works great 👍

    What acyst level on your bike did you use to make 15 miles on those small electric bikes?

    • @IreneIronTravels
      @IreneIronTravels  2 месяца назад

      These bikes will do 15 miles on full assist 5, speed/throttle. If we do assist 1 or 2 we could go probably 20-30 miles. 👍

    I think you saw a huge alligator, not crocodile. They do exist in Florida, but Alligators outnumber them 1000's to one.

    Did you have any concerns leaving your ebikes parked when you entered the no bike areas?

    • @IreneIronTravels
      @IreneIronTravels  2 месяца назад

      We're always pretty aware of the bikes, especially in big city areas and campgrounds. We usually lock them up with a big Kryptonite chain no matter how long we leave them. We didn't have it this trip though! But, it was really isolated in the park and didn't have to worry too much.

    The House has passed the EXPLORE Act, which will eliminate the need for permits or fees for one to three people filming with just one camera in the parks. Waiting for the Senate to pass it and the President to sign. I rob the National Parks - I bought my lifetime permit on my 62nd birthday. I'm glad you were able to film here I've been to Florida three times and did not enjoy it. No plans to go back.

    You’ll be fine they’re not aggressive. But if you see any Boa constrictors or rather the pythons. Hurricane put them out there. Fla doesn’t mind you killing them. Call & find out the price & rules. Those big snakes have been eating all of the local animals.
