One would think that putting "canonical" in quotation marks might tip people off to there not being definitive canonical genders,. Or that outright saying there aren't would also be a tip-off. But apparently not... I've been informed that the "One Possibility" chapter of the A Day in the Life comic for Heroes shows Kiran to be the one with the large chest.
And there are other comics where they show multiple Kirans in the same panel, this honestly just confirms the theory that there are multiple versions of Askr and of their potential summoner.
@@romain8996 The one Kiran most of the episodes follow IS the same one from that one chapter. The "main" Gag manga Kiran IS the purple haired female one.
@@luigifan001 idk man how do we know that’s even her each time, considering the fact that multiple Kirans is canon, it wouldn’t be that much of stretch to say that we aren’t watching the same Askr in each comics.
In regards to Corrin, it seems like both Corrins are canon in their own rights considering Birthright and Conquest, as well as both Kanas being present in Heirs of Fate. Female Corrin seems to be the preferred one for Conquest, while male Corrin is Birthright.
This is true, they each sorta get their own routes they are canon in. I like that Female Corrin is the mean one, that makes it more funny. That said if you only have to pick one, like what this video is going for, Female Corrin is definitely the one IS prefers
I personally always thought that male Byleth was the canon one, and my only reason for that is Leonie's personal ability, Rivalry, which increases her damage while she is adjacent to a male unit, and I really feel like the only person she would have a canonical rivalry with is Byleth (at least at the start)
@@jaybeeme I'd say what happens in the ENG dub has little effect on Japanese development, but since Three Houses worldwide release, I guess it kinda does since both sides have to avoid breaking NDA.
@@PotatoGurlSasha you know, that's a really good point I didn't consider. It could honestly go either way. I've been listening to the Kit and Krysta podcast (2 former Nintendo of America employees who worked in Marketing) and they talk about they worked EXTREMELY closely with the Japan office.
A few points against female Byleth for Three Houses at least -the Silver Snow epilogue art depicts male Byleth regardless of your choice -the Azure Moon ending does as well (though they make more effort to hide it) -Edelgard's drawing of Byleth is always the male one if you look closely -Byleth sleeps in the boys' dormitory -Shamir's partner was male, and her dialog (regardless of which Byleth you chose) has her saying Byleth looks and sounds like him -the cutscenes were made with male Byleth's height in mind -Jeralt gives Byleth his late wife's ring to propose with--makes more sense if it's his son rather than daughter Ive always considered male Byleth the "more canon" one for Three Houses and female the "more canon" for Three Hopes, with Byleth being born a girl in Hopes being the big divergence in the timeline
The biggest point is that Emblem Byleth is the male version. Of course, the Emblem versions of Robin and Corrin are male and female respectively. Kris is also heavily implied to be canonically male.
I don’t think Warriors Three Hopes defaults to Female Byleth all the time, it defaults to whichever gender you used in your most recent save file of Three Houses. Just an interesting note.
@@The4thSnake That’s why when I initially booted it up, it defaulted to a Male Byleth named Broleth and when I start a new game right now, it’s a female Byleth named Baeleth
About Shez. Female Shez was featured on the Nintendo Dream cover that featured 3 Hopes (with Male Byleth to contrast). In addition, She was the first legendary Hero for Hopes over her male counterpart. I would say they are overall 50:50 in terms of representation. Funnily enough, a manga adaptation for Engage was just announced and Male Alear is being used for it.
Correction: byleth (male) was added to heroes first as a bonous for owning 3 houses, the reason that we got female byleth first as summonable was to make male byleth (who has arguably better skills) cooler for longer.
@@dljb7463 and yet I have no idea as to why he just decided that female byleth is still more so canon or having more of an edge. As while female version did come out first in the gacha both are in the game. Where as in engage only the male version of Byleth is in it.
doesn't matter creators say both are canon anyway not sure what the point of even talking about it, but I chose female for hopes because of the whole connection to the goddess stuff
For Alear, i think it's the female, as she's the face of most tutorials in the game (if not all of them), and i think her arc with lumera fits more as a girl
Actually, the gender of the Alear used in the in-game tutorials changes depending on what gender you picked for your Alear. If you picked male Alear, you see female Alear in the tutorials and if you picked female Alear, you see male Alear in the tutorials.
You could also take into acount the amiibos. That would confirm male Robin (only Robin amiibo that exist) and female Corin (both exist, so Corin does'nt change). But Byleth exist only in male, wich make him "the official" one in my opinion (I personnaly prefer female, but well...). The others does'nt have amiibos (yet), so that would not change either.
@@The4thSnake They mean the figure, which depending on the figure on top, changes the default. Inkling Boy amiibo from splatoon for instance, uses the inkling boy alt as its default.
@@The4thSnake all these (Robin, Corrin and byleth) are smash bros figures. But still, both Corrin versions exist (male AND female) so I don't see why that should not be valid. They chose to offer Robin and Byleth only as males, which would comfort me in the idea that it was the "most official" design/gender. Corrin being available as both would confirm that female one is canon an that they offered Male as being the "go to form" of smash bros.
If we’re taking merchandise into consideration than Female Corrin definitely has the edge in that regard as well to a lesser extent Female Byleth with her Goodsmile figure.
@@ifisayyou There are no “canon” avatars. There just is not enough evidence to support the idea that there is one, and to be honest, I’m happy there is no canon design. I just do not see a need to make one “canon”.
@@luigifan001 What? Bro did you play Awakening and Fates, or even heroes? Warriors even to a lesser extent Three Hopes? They confirm Dragon Gates/Multiverses are canon.
@@ironrex6979 Yeah, multiverse has been a thing for a long time in Fire Emblem, and basically everything that can happen in the games is treated as "canon" to some degree for whichever universe they happen in.
@@ironrex6979 The multiverse being canon does not mean that all genders are canon. Just like injustice superman is not canon to main supperman or a marvel example would be any universe where 616 spiderman is not peter parker
@@luigifan001 Yes it does. Heroes and Warriors are canon and they do back this up. I suppose IS is using the same logic Game Freak applies with Pokémon: each game cartridge is it’s own canon world.
I was going to ask about the original Fire Emblem Warriors protagonists but then I remembered they are in fact separate people, which throws me off seeing as they follow the same gender swapped design principal of the avatars. Makes me wonder if they were originally avatars before it got changed into a story thing
I always love the the idea of "both are just canon and they are basically just twins" argument.. honestly I've been calling Male Corrin Just Corrin and calling Fem Corrin Kamui this when time
@@AdeptKing Honestly, I never was in a situation where I had to specifically distinguish between the two. I guess I would just specify and say Kamui from Echoes. It wouldn't be the first time for characters to share the same name in Fire Emblem, like Hilda (FE4 and 3H) or Selena (FE8 and FE14) for example.
This is a great overview video of the avatar appearances so far ^^ I personally like to think of it as Schrodinger's canon. Which avatar is canon depends on what Intelligent Systems decides is canon in that moment and you don't know which it is until you open the box. 2:41 Too bad, I'm playing as Pepsi Man no matter what anyone else says >:3
I don't know Fire Emblem, but it's good to see another person interested in the malleable visual aspect of games. The past few years I worked on a "Keychain Canonicity" project for the Kingdom Hearts games on ao3, and have recently expanded that to Kirby&theForgottenLand and Kid Icarus Uprising.
I personally don't think there's a "canon" pick, just a more prominent one for marketing purposes. It's not like, say, Genshin Impact, where Aether is clearly the Traveler and Lumine is the lost twin, but you can choose to reverse their canonical roles anyway. Love the joke in the end, to me, F!Alear looks better than M!Alear anyway. Hopefully, M!Alear will be in the next Engage banner though. -Warriors never.-
I remember there being a story event of the two Kris meeting eachother, and by the end of the interaction, it was "confirmed" that the male Kris is the "canon" one. As everyone who knew Kris, recognize the male one, not the female one. I think they also implied this with the other Avatars, but I could be wrong.
1:50 M!Byleth actually came first as a free bonus if you purchased 3 House 2:00 wouldn’t that make the reverse canon, as 3 Hopes is considered one of the many alternate timelines? In 3 Hopes, Shez was “supposed to fade into history” ala they were killed by Byleth in the original timeline, but were saved by Arval in this one. Also, if there were any canon gendered avatar, it’d be Female Corrin and Male Byleth. All the games that include those 2 have the reverse gender as an option, but Engage doesn’t do that and forces you to use those 2 specific avatars.
For Kris, Heroes does have a useful fact; there's a Forging Bonds event with both male and female Kris, as well as some other characters from New Mystery; it's stated by those other characters that their world is one with a male Kris.
@@DLCMan1218Silver Snow, Azure Moon, Verdant Wind and the secret route Crimson Flower (not a very difficult secret to uncover but hey, it is what it is)
Yeah. If you got him that way he still had Chris's voice. Though it went uncredited. It took an update or two before Zach's voice was patched in to replace him like with three houses itself.
Yeah, I tend to agree with most of these considering the media shown. I do think that Corrin's an interesting case, since you have all three routes of Fates to contend with. Like the box art shows, I head canon that male Corrin chose Hoshido, female Corrin chose Nohr, and when it comes to Revelation I also default to female for the same reasons in this video. Also, I did not expect you to at least played/heard enough of Heroes to know about the Forging Bonds stuff
While this video is more an examination of what form the creators tend to Prefer rather than a serious declaration of canonicity I do want to say that the actual answer for canon is "Both" due to the series explicitly being a multiverse with all possibilities existing at once with Fates in particular showing that dimensional travel is even possible, and Heirs of Fate using both Kanas, confirming both Corrins.
I think it's clear to me that the canonocity is: New Mystery of the Emblem: Male Kris Awakening: Male Robin Fates Birthright: Male Corrin Fates Conquest and Revelations: Female Corrin 3Houses: Male Byleth 3Hopes: Male Shez and Female Byleth Warriors: Male Robin and Female Corrin (duh) Engage: Male Alear Heroes: All female except Kris, because fan service, I guess. Byleth gets equal gender rep for the most part. Kiran has no gender though.
Robin: Male (Amiibo + fits better imo, since Grima is male) Corrin: Female (See Engage, plus marketing favors her) Byleth: Male (Houses timeline, see first trailers + Engage), Female (Hopes timeline, based on trailers) Shez: Male (F!Shez got no marketing besides FEH) Alear: Female (even though M!Alear got the reveal trailer, F!Alear got everything else + FEH)
Female Robins fits better cause I don’t see any other female that fits Chrom other than F!Robin. Also Lucina wouldn’t even exist if Chrom married another Awakening girl ☠️💀
For me my reasons for accepting female Byleth as canon were one: fitting vessel for the goddess Sothis, and two: Blue Lions route and her relationship with Dimitri fits well for me. Also yeah, seeing female Byleth being used more in medias than Male Byleth gave me another reason
How is “fitting vessel for the goddess Sothis” a proper reason? We’ve had god knows how many male-possessed females in the FE franchise already, so a female-possessed male isn’t too out of the ordinary.
As much as I like FemByleth I have a a counterpoint to reason one: Byleth wasn't purposely created to be Sothis's perfect vessel, they were made accidentally to be the vessel Their mother was supposed to be the perfect vessel, but that failed. Its not like Rhea has the power to manipulate the growth of a child whilst they're still in their mother's womb right?... right?...
I agree with all but Byleth. There's actually bias within Three Houses itself that tells you that M!Byleth is favored. One, being that all the art within the game is made with M!Byleth. Edelgard's drawing of Byleth is the male one regardless of what Byleth you choose, same with the ending mural with Enlightened one Byleth. It also defaults to the male sprite on the loading screen before you select a gender. Along with that, Engage is actually pretty damning evidence for M!Byleth, considering it's a mainline game and F!Corrin was actually chosen despite not being the default in her own game. I also don't really count Warriors because it's an alternate reality that never existed in Three Houses. But Byleth in Engage is directly based on the Three House's universe, considering Edelgard, Claude, and Dimitri recognize him.
@@bonoshii I think she is for Three Houses, and I consider Three Houses the original timeline. A lot of the events that happen in Three Hopes are opposite of what happens in the main game. Instead of Byleth becoming a teacher to the students, they become an enemy to the students. Instead of Shez being dead in the original timeline, they live in Three Hopes, etc.., so I feel like if we go with the logic that Three Houses Byleth was suppose to be male, then Three Houses Shez is probably female.
I usually play as the male avatar in my first playthrough then female in the second, then whatever one I liked better in the rest but I picked female Alear for my first playthrough of engage, and honestly I’m really enjoying the story with her. But yes, I’m so glad they chose male Byleth for Engage.
Female Byleth design is full expression, not suitable for the character that suppose to be emotionless/full of mystery unlike the male Byleth design had
@@dummykeir1717 Seems more like a minor direction problem then proof of canon, because they are still called emotionless and hard to read regardless of which gender you pick by so many students. FByleths design also got shat on for being stupid and skimpy (ripped pantyhose leggings?) compared to the male. they were focusing too much on making the female look more "cute" instead of just being Byleth.
I'd like to think that both Corrin and Byleth's gender are canon depending on which game you're referring to. Male Corrin for Birthright, female for Revalation and Conquest. Male Byleth for 3 House and Female Byleth with Male Shez for 3 Hopes (3 Hopes marketing has this whole counterpart going on between Shez and Byleth). The Emblems version of Corrin and Byleth are amalgamations of all the routes in their game (3 Hopes probably won't be applicable since that kinda was developed after Engage was a thing). With the Alears, the male is probably the cannon choice for now since during his first Emblem transformation on screen, the dev chose the male official art to make the stance for both genders
In regards to Byleth. I put ENGAGE in more priority than Three Hopes, since ENGAGE is a main game, while Three Hopes is an Alternate Timeline. Especially taking into account that Corrin is consistent with Warriors Story Mode. Can definitely make an argument for both though. (Also why do I instinctively type Engage in all caps?)
I guess Rhea would also be keener to keep using females for her experiments to keep Sothis' gender the same, despite Sitris' request. So female Byleth makes a lot more sense. Corrin just has way more appearances as female so that is just how it fits, and Robin is as you said. For Engage, I would say female Alear on pure basis that she was most likely drawn first, based on what I know about the artist, they seem to design more girls than guys. So female Alear was probably designed first, then the male version based on that, so that Is what I am going with until anymore official media comes out that may say otherwise.
I always wondered why female robin and male corrin aren’t default. These two can romance the character important to the story (chrom, giving birth to lucina, and azura)
2:39 I don't care about "canon gender," since there probably isn't one, but I do have my preferences; Male Mar(c)k, for a reason I'll explain in a bit, female Kris, because male Mark (those games are too old for me to care much, honestly, but If I Had To Pick A Gender...), female Robin, because family drama when you marry Chrom, and also that gives you male Morgan, called "Marc" in the Japanese version, who I once read someone say he might be the one who fell through a Dragon Gate and woke up an amnesiac tactician in Lyn's Tutorial Mode, just like his hero his mama, Corrin depends on which route, and I can't remember which one goes where, but I do know male Corrin in Revelations because Azura being the only actual case of blood-related incest amuses me, like dodging a wall of bullets only to get smacked in the face by a rake you stepped on, male Kieran because gender truly doesn't matter so I'll just make it the hot guy who looks closest to me, Byleth is the same as Corrin, it depends on which route (male Byleth for both BE and SS, BE because the lack of m!By/Edelgard annoyed me, and SS because it makes Rhea seem crazier than she already is and it amuses me; f!Byleth for AM and VW because marriageable Lords, though ultimately Sothis because I prefer her to stay a(n archbishop) professor by herself), male Shez because female Byleth, and male Alear because I like there being a Dragon Child of each gender in the game
@@DLCMan1218 the manga isn't canon, lumera is still alive in Brodia, the pacing is weird, alear killed Neuclace. It's about as canon as fan fiction. heroes however is canon and they put her face as the series entry face (like Chrom with awakening, sothis for houses/hopes)
I researched the name Byleth, an alternative spelling of Beleth, a King of Hell. "King" being a masculine term so I was thinking Male Byleth is the canon gender. I researched Alear being Gaelic for 'son of pale youth' and 'son of Ohdar's servant' I have no idea who Ohdar is but they both use 'son' a masculine term so again, thinking Male Alear to be canon.
For the people who are not happy with this you can choose your avatar in games don't worry but this is a good analysis of the most popular avatar we use I'm 100% okay with that
Wait for Byleth coming to heroes, Male was first. He was given away as a gift for people who got TH. I remember since it had his original VA before they patched him out
In terms of what’s likely to actually be canon, I’d say Corrin is the only female one with everyone else being male. But as far as designs go, my preferences are: Female Kris Male Robin Female Corrin Default Kiran Male Byleth Female Shez Female Alear While Mark is just a sprite.
Actually with Robin Male Robin actually appears in Codename STEAM. it is based on the Amiibo so may not count here but it is still an unexpected appearance
I think that male Byleth is more likely since when you choose a gender at the beginning of 3 houses it defaults to male, and he's in engage, and then female Byleth is the default for hopes, I agree with all the others though. I just prefer male Byleth because he completes the pattern of male Robin, Female Corrin, male Byleth, and female Alear :)
Only way Three Hopes will default to female Byleth is if your Three Houses save file used female Byleth. With no Three Houses file to influence the choice, the game defaults to male for both Shez and Byleth
I feel that both Byleths are cannon. But if i were to choose one more likely i would say that f!Byleth makes more sense as Byleth is perfect vessal of the goddess and i would say that female form would match Sothis more.
In the intro of Engage female Alear appears a lot more often than male Alear, especially during a specific part that's mirrored in the game. So I think it's safe to say that female Alear is the canon Alear.
The most obvious ones are Male Kris, Male Robin and Female Corrin besides that it’s anyone’s guess. Byleth being Female is only supported by three hopes which is a what if route so you can say female is canon in an alternate universe while Male is supported by Engage which is a mainline entry (also you got a free M!Byleth in heroes if you owned Three houses) Shez idk maybe it depends on the avatar you use, like if you picked Male Byleth then Schez is female and vise versa so with that I asume Shez from three houses is female while the one from the 3H timeline is male. Alear seems like it’s gonna be male too since most promo uses the male one except on heroes but it could just be because Female is more memeable and popular so we have to wait and see (I hope male is canon since the design is less ugly than the female version).
Some extra points for M!Byleth include Silver Snow and Azure Moon’s ending murals featuring male Byleth no matter what, Edelgard drawing male Byleth in Crimson Flower no matter what, and the fact that Byleth’s loading screen sprite is male before even picking their gender when you start a new game
There's no really no canonical gender whatsoever. People who argue over it forget that Fire Emblem is a multiverse and not some singular timeline. At most one could argue which one that IS prefers, and even then it could be debatable because their choice will can be influenced by whomever the fanbase favors as well in order to sell more.
I agree with most of these, but (sorry if this seems sloppy) in regards of the main three houses timeline, I always think male Byleth is canon because of engage and the fact I think it fits a bit better for the story (I love and will always play as female Byleth in three houses, since I always go for the female avatar). I like to think three hopes genderswap Byleth and Shez since it is a different universe. As for Corrin, like many other comments that are in here, depends on the version. On Birthright M!Corrin is canon while in conquest F!Corrin is canon. Edit: since I wanna come back to this topic. Fire emblem is a multiverse (heroes and engage. Even the dragon gate from fates proves it), so all genders of the avatars are technically canon. The ones that we see are the more preferred over the other…..or is it a spider man scenario of most Peter s are spider but some are not. Like Robin is more commonly male but some are female.
I agree and share the same views on who I would consider to be canon between the Fire Emblem avatars. Mark is well, Mark and Kiran can pretty much be who player wants them to be. Male Kris is an easy choice since he is on the New Mysteries box art and looks to be a better fit. Male Robin I always liked more and same can be said with Female Corrin. They both seem to fit their games respective stories better in my opinion. Jumping ahead to Alear, I wasn’t so sure until Female Alear was starting to get featured more in Engage’s advertisements and the fact she made it into FEH before Male Alear, I would pretty much go with Female Alear. Male Shez seems pretty easy since he’s on the 3-Hopes box art and when introduced into FEH alongside with Female Shez, he was the only one who got to be a 5-Star. Now when it comes to Byleth, both versions seem equally popular (especially in Japan) but I prefer Female Byleth more. The fact that Byleth is the reincarnation of the goddess Sothis, to me just makes more sense when it’s Female Byleth. Not to mention she can achieve S support with all 3 houses leaders. As for the whole Byleth in FEH argument, here’s what I have to say. It’s true that players could of gotten Male Byleth in FEH first when they bought Three Houses but that required linking both your FEH and Switch accounts with the same My Nintendo Account and redeeming it threw the rewards program. While Female Byleth got a proper FEH introduction in a New Heroes trailer along side the 3 house leaders, was featured in first 3-Houses summoning banner and the Forging Bonds event days before Three Houses was launched. So players couldn’t redeem for Male Byleth until the game was available, even then he got a trailer and was properly in FEH a couple weeks later.
Male Byleth is the most heavily featured in all official media, also they switch the gender each game. Male(awakening), female(fates), Male(TH), Female(engage). Seeing as female alear is who you see in the in-game tutorials and now is in heroes. Even tho the title song shows Male alear a bit more.
@@harleyquinn8D No, I wouldn’t say they switch the gender for each game. That’s never been the case. If you look back at Fates promotion leading up to its release, Male Corrin was the one heavily featured. Plus Male Corrin is even on the cover of the official Fates art book. Despite that, Female Corrin ended up being the more popular one of the two, with having a figma, a nendoroid, a plushie and even going as far as being ranked #1 in the official popularity polls for Fates female characters. If Male Byleth is the most heavily featured in all official media, than why is Female Byleth also prominently featured in official media and merchandise too? She’s in the Three Houses game intro and Female Byleth is even the one getting the 1/7 scale figure from IS and Good Smile Company’s official Fire Emblem figure line, which also has Lyn, Ike and Marth. If you meant by official game marketing than yeah, but again so was Male Corrin for Fates. About Female Alear in Engage’s in-game tutorials, so was Female Shez for Three Hopes and both Byleths were featured pretty evenly in the Three Houses tutorials. It was also announced that Engage is getting an official prequel Manga with Male Alear being chosen for that prequel. My guess to why Male Byleth and Female Corrin were the ones chosen for Engage is because the developers choose Female Corrin based on her popularity and since they probably wanted to keep the male/female ratio even for the Emblem rings, they decided to use Male Byleth. He too is an Avatar unit, just like Corrin and Lucina was chosen to be the Awakening rep so Male Robin wasn’t an option.
The only reason I think you should pick the name option for the new hero is because I saw one dude name him Creston Kolgate and I think that's hilarious
I find the entire idea of a “canon” design to be silly in the first place. I don’t really see why there has to be one. From what I gather, there just isn’t a consistent enough pattern when accounting for reappearances. But even then, I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s a “canon” version of any given character. I think it would be nice if they let you CHOOSE what gender the character is on their reappearances in future games, so that this entire confusion can be laid to rest. It mostly seems like they’re just trying to balance male/female appearances in future games, as opposed to saying that one is *definitely* “canon”. But again, I would much prefer if they let us pick and choose. For example: 1:05 ……. why can we not simply pick female Robin as the one in the main story, or male Corrin as the one in the main story…….? There is *objectively* no reason to limit us on this lol. Just let fans do what they would personally prefer. You made a model for both, so I see no reason why you can’t let your players pick and choose their favorites.
There were several fates mangas, many of them included male Corrin. Also if you have kept up to date with the manga, you'll know that it doesn't follow the game's events closely at all. It's more reminiscent of fan fiction than of something official.
M Alear would be cannon since the manga that is coming out is about M Alear. Also I am pretty sure Three Hopes is not considered canon but set in a AU in the Three Houses world.
I've been following the manga, and it follows the game's story about as closely as fanfiction. Also there were many mangas of male Corrin around the time that fates came out.
I can't stand male Corrin. I know, i'm sexist here, but i can forgive a female avatar for being naive and too nice for their own good. If a male avatar is like that it pisses me off
Before I watch this, my answers would be FE7 Mark, Male FE12 Kris, Male because… boxart? FE13 Robin, Male because of Warriors FE14 Corrin, Female because of Warriors and Engage FE16 Byleth, Male because of Engage FEWarriors 3 Hopes Shez… Male? Boxart trailer stuff maybe? FE17 Alear, low key I don’t know because both Male and Female seem equally represented in boxart and opening cinematic, but if I had to guess I would say Female because she made it into Heroes first and we need some gender balance here clearly. Oh shoot I’m a series purist and I forgot about Heroes Kiran lol, um Male because it is implied at times I think before they decided to try and make everything work for both Male and Female. Either ambiguous or solidly male so I’m saying Male.
For Corrin I am going to say something I find important yet incredibly weird, we all know they use Male for Birthright and Female for Conquest, but for revelations and overall the game kinda try to ship Azura with Corrin (I know is incest I don't support this but it is how it is) and tend to see more of male Corrin being the main one. As for Byleth wasn't the male more utilized at the beging? That is another thing it seems like IS changes to whoever sells more and I could argue that is what they did with Corrin in Warriors, some people say female Robin is now the canon because they keep bringing her to the spotlight more these days. Anyway I hate avatars lol.
I think IS wanted male Corrin to be the main one since that was the one in the trailers and Smash(yes I know both were there but the male was the first one shown) but I guess they changed their tune over the years.
I think that Male Robin is canon based on all of the cross overs he’s been in. Female Byleth and Male Shez are canon seeing how the cover art for Three Hopes consist of them fighting. Alear is up for debate, same goes for Kirin and Kris. And Corrin, I think that male Corrin is canon in Birthright because that route has the best waifus (Kagero, Oboro and Setsuna), and female Corrin is canon in Conquest because that route has the best husbandos (Owain, Inigo and Keaton). And for revelations, that one is up for debate. Some might think Male Corrin seeing how he was in a lot of promotional advertisements along with his marriage to Azura before the writers made the dumb decision to make them cousins. A lot of fans think female Corrin because she was more popular than her male counterpart or twin brother if we’re going with the fan theories.
Male Byleth is used for Silver Snow and Azure Moon’s ending mural’s. Edelgard draws male Byleth in Crimson Flower. Male Byleth is the default option in both Three Houses and Three Hopes. Male Byleth is the one used for Engage. Male Byleth is more likely. As for Kris, the male one is more likely. In a Forging Bonds event in Heroes, Kris is shown interacting with the other Archanea characters and they all recognise male Kris as the one they all travelled with in New Mystery of the Emblem, while no one recognises female Kris and are shocked at her existence. And as for Corrin the female one is used for Engage and I’m fairly certain she makes reference to Revelation in a conversation with Camilla. Making Revelation the main Fates route along with female Corrin being the main Corrin.
It seems like they really tried to make it ambiguous with this game. They have a lot of same sex pairing this time and the characters seem like they feel you in the main story no matter the gender.
I just kinda just go with the pattern I've noticed when they appear in other media . Robin being male. Korrin being female. Byleth bing male. So therefore, I'll start engage with female Alear. And it could be cause how they present them, but for me this just seems right and I like them like this. Each game I played I was male, but for Korrin I prefer the female counterpart. Maybe after I play engage I'll go back and play awakening, fates and echoes.
@@DLCMan1218 lol most likely. I'll eventually will play the other gender, as I did with three houses, but It's gonna be hard with engage. I don't like the character design for male Alear.
Byleth’s dialogue in that scene is this: “The King of Liberation, revived? I doubt you’ll go peacefully. Well, neither will I. The flow of time may have brought us both here, but now I will end your journey.” He says nothing about being old enemies.
Apparently from the FEH comics, canonically it is actually the big chested one. There’s a comic where they have a costume party and the joke is kiran doesn’t get ready for it and she wins, and it’s the purple haired one. At least that’s an interpretation if they’re supposed to be canon.
Male Alear is more canon because his pants look comfortable to wear and girl Alear's whole outfit looks uncomfortable to wear and leaves her completely exposed to getting a stab wound in her upper thigh. 🙃 For real though I dislike how girl Alear's cape clips through her hair. It's extra bad when she doing Engage skills
Since Three Hopes is an alternate timeline. I'd say M Byleth is canon for Three Houses while F Byleth is canon to Three Hopes But that's just my opinion.
To be fair the only way to be truly cannon is for there to be a direct follow-up to the story of the games with avatars but since that isn't the case it's whatever you want
This was already answered a long time ago. Games with both female and male protags are both canon just existing in two separate multiverses. Heroes also confirms this since you can summon both.
Male Byleth was added to heroes before as a bonus for buying three houses and Warriors Three Hopes looks for a Three Houses save file and defaults Byleth to the gender in that save
Robin being male makes a lot of sense because we only have a male Robin amiibo and since Grima is confirmed to be male and Robin has Grima's heart so the "we are one and the same" makes more sense if the gender is equal. Though female Robin is equally as cool
One detail in Smash Ultimate is that in the classic mode artwork Robin is depicted in his male form and Corrin is depicted in her female form, but Corrin’s base alt is male so I’m not sure what version that game classes as canon.
for 3 hourse i think it's Male Byleth (i think engage actually proves it as Male Byleth says something about nemesis, making Male Byleth canon AND golden deer route canon) and for the 3 Warriors it's Female Byleth
Its the same case as "Gudako" or "Madoka-senpai" for Fate GO and Madoka Record.
This version of Kiran is separate from the one you see in the game.
@@luigifan001 idk man how do we know that’s even her each time, considering the fact that multiple Kirans is canon, it wouldn’t be that much of stretch to say that we aren’t watching the same Askr in each comics.
@@romain8996 That is up to you to prove.
However, at least on that issue, Kiran is 100% canonically the purple haired version.
True can agree just depends on the game
There is also an official manga featuring Female Corrin but the main character is Leo, the manga follows revelations.
so which one is Revelations Corrin
@@illialidur8244 you're a mean one ms corrin
I personally always thought that male Byleth was the canon one, and my only reason for that is Leonie's personal ability, Rivalry, which increases her damage while she is adjacent to a male unit, and I really feel like the only person she would have a canonical rivalry with is Byleth (at least at the start)
I don’t disagree, but you could also interpret it as her tomboyish nature wanting to prove she’s “as tough as the boys”.
I think it was said something like Male Byleth is Houses Female Byleth is hopes or something
I have a feeling that male Byleth was intended to be the canon protagonist until the voice actor controversy and replacement happened.

I'd say what happens in the ENG dub has little effect on Japanese development, but since Three Houses worldwide release, I guess it kinda does since both sides have to avoid breaking NDA.
Most Avatars: This one is canon because they are used more often in the Story Mode.
Kiran from Heroes: This one isn’t cannon *due to her large chest*
A few points against female Byleth for Three Houses at least
-the Silver Snow epilogue art depicts male Byleth regardless of your choice
-the Azure Moon ending does as well (though they make more effort to hide it)
-Edelgard's drawing of Byleth is always the male one if you look closely
-Byleth sleeps in the boys' dormitory
-Shamir's partner was male, and her dialog (regardless of which Byleth you chose) has her saying Byleth looks and sounds like him
-the cutscenes were made with male Byleth's height in mind
-Jeralt gives Byleth his late wife's ring to propose with--makes more sense if it's his son rather than daughter
Ive always considered male Byleth the "more canon" one for Three Houses and female the "more canon" for Three Hopes, with Byleth being born a girl in Hopes being the big divergence in the timeline
It even defaults to the name you gave them.
Interesting.
Yeah he's right I got male byleth when starting up three hopes
@@The4thSnake That’s why when I initially booted it up, it defaulted to a Male Byleth named Broleth and when I start a new game right now, it’s a female Byleth named Baeleth
@CrestRibbon thank you, I’m glad you can appreciate that.
So we can tell the artist they're drawing it wrong.
Jk
Correction: byleth (male) was added to heroes first as a bonous for owning 3 houses, the reason that we got female byleth first as summonable was to make male byleth (who has arguably better skills) cooler for longer.
Also byleth's engage is male

doesn't matter creators say both are canon anyway not sure what the point of even talking about it, but I chose female for hopes because of the whole connection to the goddess stuff
For Alear, i think it's the female, as she's the face of most tutorials in the game (if not all of them), and i think her arc with lumera fits more as a girl
And it’s more sweet veyle having a big sister

I wouldn't count Robin, since that's specifically a Smash amiibo, which defaults them all to male.

Glad someone put this in video format, technically it's not a hard thing to figure out but having it all in one place is good
This is a great overview video of the avatar appearances so far ^^
I personally like to think of it as Schrodinger's canon.
-Warriors never.-
So basically, when in doubt, check the ads
I remember there being a story event of the two Kris meeting eachother, and by the end of the interaction, it was "confirmed" that the male Kris is the "canon" one. As everyone who knew Kris, recognize the male one, not the female one.
I think they also implied this with the other Avatars, but I could be wrong.
1:50 M!Byleth actually came first as a free bonus if you purchased 3 House
2:00 wouldn’t that make the reverse canon, as 3 Hopes is considered one of the many alternate timelines?
With Three Houses having 4 different routes, it could be a different version for each route
there's a 4th route?

Interesting.
Was gonna play fem colgate lead for engage since I was male male Byleth last, but good to know I'm doing a potential canon route.
I think it's clear to me that the canonocity is:
New Mystery of the Emblem: Male Kris
Awakening: Male Robin
Fates Birthright: Male Corrin
Fates Conquest and Revelations: Female Corrin
3Houses: Male Byleth
3Hopes: Male Shez and Female Byleth
Warriors: Male Robin and Female Corrin (duh)
Engage: Male Alear
Heroes: All female except Kris, because fan service, I guess. Byleth gets equal gender rep for the most part. Kiran has no gender though.
Robin: Male (Amiibo + fits better imo, since Grima is male)
Corrin: Female (See Engage, plus marketing favors her)
Byleth: Male (Houses timeline, see first trailers + Engage), Female (Hopes timeline, based on trailers)
Shez: Male (F!Shez got no marketing besides FEH)
Alear: Female (even though M!Alear got the reveal trailer, F!Alear got everything else + FEH)
manga adaptation likes to say something about Alear's canon Gender
Female Robins fits better cause I don’t see any other female that fits Chrom other than F!Robin. Also Lucina wouldn’t even exist if Chrom married another Awakening girl ☠️💀
For me my reasons for accepting female Byleth as canon were one: fitting vessel for the goddess Sothis, and two: Blue Lions route and her relationship with Dimitri fits well for me. Also yeah, seeing female Byleth being used more in medias than Male Byleth gave me another reason
How is “fitting vessel for the goddess Sothis” a proper reason? We’ve had god knows how many male-possessed females in the FE franchise already, so a female-possessed male isn’t too out of the ordinary.
male byleth is the canon one btw, just look at the own game tutorial shots, also in engage its pretty nunch confirmed
As much as I like FemByleth I have a a counterpoint to reason one: Byleth wasn't purposely created to be Sothis's perfect vessel, they were made accidentally to be the vessel
Their mother was supposed to be the perfect vessel, but that failed.
Its not like Rhea has the power to manipulate the growth of a child whilst they're still in their mother's womb right?... right?...
Also I wouldn't get so many Byleth x Edelgard yuri ships.
Yeah but male byleth just looks cooler
When it comes to games nothing is "more canon" for me than the main series titles. And since Byleth is male in Engage Im going with that.
Does this then suggest F!Shez is more canon? Since it seems with Three Hopes they wanted each to be opposite genders
I thought I remembered Male Byleth coming to Heroes first via free unit for people who preordered 3 Houses
Honestly just glad Mark was mentioned. Nice video!
If you think about Robin's reveal trailer for smash, they also used male Robin. So there's a bit more to Robin, so that's cool I guess
I usually just pick the male characters lmao actually really happy they went with male byleth for engage
I usually play as the male avatar in my first playthrough then female in the second, then whatever one I liked better in the rest but I picked female Alear for my first playthrough of engage, and honestly I’m really enjoying the story with her.
But yes, I’m so glad they chose male Byleth for Engage.
@@CommanderBly5052 understandable glad your enjoying it I just beat the game it was a lot of fun!!
Female Byleth design is full expression, not suitable for the character that suppose to be emotionless/full of mystery unlike the male Byleth design had
@@dummykeir1717 true!
Plus male Alear is used in the games official manga
If I remember correctly male Alear is gonna be the protag for the engage manga
In regards to Byleth. I put ENGAGE in more priority than Three Hopes, since ENGAGE is a main game, while Three Hopes is an Alternate Timeline. Especially taking into account that Corrin is consistent with Warriors Story Mode. Can definitely make an argument for both though. (Also why do I instinctively type Engage in all caps?)
You typed it in all caps because the official title has ENGAGE in all caps. Every marketing material has it in all caps.
plus Byleth can still be male in Three Hopes
Because you're used to hearing "Emblem ENGAGE!"
The best part about female byleth is that she's in the same game as edelgard so I have an example of a good design to point to
I guess Rhea would also be keener to keep using females for her experiments to keep Sothis' gender the same, despite Sitris' request.
Byleth wasn't one of her experiments tho, and I feel like the idea that Rhea still calls Male Byleth mom makes Rheas character a lot more disturbing
I always wondered why female robin and male corrin aren’t default. These two can romance the character important to the story (chrom, giving birth to lucina, and azura)
But... Male Robin can romance Lucina who is also important to the story, maybe even more so than Chrom.
@@Ultimabuster92 yea but chrom has more "chemistry" with robin more than Lucina

female Kris, because male Mark (those games are too old for me to care much, honestly, but If I Had To Pick A Gender...),
female Robin, because family drama when you marry Chrom, and also that gives you male Morgan, called "Marc" in the Japanese version, who I once read someone say he might be the one who fell through a Dragon Gate and woke up an amnesiac tactician in Lyn's Tutorial Mode, just like his hero his mama,
Corrin depends on which route, and I can't remember which one goes where, but I do know male Corrin in Revelations because Azura being the only actual case of blood-related incest amuses me, like dodging a wall of bullets only to get smacked in the face by a rake you stepped on,
male Kieran because gender truly doesn't matter so I'll just make it the hot guy who looks closest to me,
Byleth is the same as Corrin, it depends on which route (male Byleth for both BE and SS, BE because the lack of m!By/Edelgard annoyed me, and SS because it makes Rhea seem crazier than she already is and it amuses me; f!Byleth for AM and VW because marriageable Lords, though ultimately Sothis because I prefer her to stay a(n archbishop) professor by herself),
male Shez because female Byleth,
and male Alear because I like there being a Dragon Child of each gender in the game

Wait for Byleth coming to heroes, Male was first. He was given away as a gift for people who got TH. I remember since it had his original VA before they patched him out
I like that Mark has his own gender. "Mark"
my gender is now classified as Mark
In terms of what’s likely to actually be canon, I’d say Corrin is the only female one with everyone else being male. But as far as designs go, my preferences are:
Female Kris
Male Robin
Female Corrin
Default Kiran
Male Byleth
Female Shez
Female Alear
While Mark is just a sprite.
Actually with Robin Male Robin actually appears in Codename STEAM. it is based on the Amiibo so may not count here but it is still an unexpected appearance
2:44 You are absolutely right!! lol
But then male Alear is used for the game’s official manga, much like how female Corrin was used for Fates’ manga

@@dizzyheads no, official manga's for game usually tends be canon to the games unless the Devs decided to make it non canon

Byleth being Female is only supported by three hopes which is a what if route so you can say female is canon in an alternate universe while Male is supported by Engage which is a mainline entry (also you got a free M!Byleth in heroes if you owned Three houses)
Shez idk maybe it depends on the avatar you use, like if you picked Male Byleth then Schez is female and vise versa so with that I asume Shez from three houses is female while the one from the 3H timeline is male.
Alear seems like it’s gonna be male too since most promo uses the male one except on heroes but it could just be because Female is more memeable and popular so we have to wait and see (I hope male is canon since the design is less ugly than the female version).

Female Shez and Male Byleth feels a lot better to me for some reason.
My social skills can't decipher whether this video is satire or completely serious
And F!Corrin for Revelation
I’d argue Byleth as male more.
"If you're playing male, you're doing it wrong"
Story of my life.
For example:
1:05
……. why can we not simply pick female Robin as the one in the main story, or male Corrin as the one in the main story…….? There is *objectively* no reason to limit us on this lol. Just let fans do what they would personally prefer. You made a model for both, so I see no reason why you can’t let your players pick and choose their favorites.
Could we consider Manga as canonical? As Male Alear is being used for the future Manga
Can’t hurt I suppose, as there was actually a Fates manga too a few years ago that featured female Corrin as the star
I personnally play with male avatars mostly, aside from Corrin who's usually female in my playthrough
I can't stand male Corrin. I know, i'm sexist here, but i can forgive a female avatar for being naive and too nice for their own good. If a male avatar is like that it pisses me off
@@Ultimabuster92 fair, I'm a girl and I feel the same. Especially in Conquest. I think that's why I can tolerate M!Corrin in birthright.
Before I watch this, my answers would be
FE7 Mark, Male
FE12 Kris, Male because… boxart?
FE13 Robin, Male because of Warriors
FE14 Corrin, Female because of Warriors and Engage
FE16 Byleth, Male because of Engage
FEWarriors 3 Hopes Shez… Male? Boxart trailer stuff maybe?
FE17 Alear, low key I don’t know because both Male and Female seem equally represented in boxart and opening cinematic, but if I had to guess I would say Female because she made it into Heroes first and we need some gender balance here clearly.
Oh shoot I’m a series purist and I forgot about Heroes Kiran lol, um Male because it is implied at times I think before they decided to try and make everything work for both Male and Female. Either ambiguous or solidly male so I’m saying Male.
manga adaptation likes to say hi for Alear's gender
For Corrin I am going to say something I find important yet incredibly weird, we all know they use Male for Birthright and Female for Conquest, but for revelations and overall the game kinda try to ship Azura with Corrin (I know is incest I don't support this but it is how it is) and tend to see more of male Corrin being the main one.
As for Byleth wasn't the male more utilized at the beging? That is another thing it seems like IS changes to whoever sells more and I could argue that is what they did with Corrin in Warriors, some people say female Robin is now the canon because they keep bringing her to the spotlight more these days. Anyway I hate avatars lol.
yeah this is pretty much how I thought it'd be. Byleth I can see going either way (but I prefer M!Byleth)
I was watching someone stream with F"Alear and playing my game with M"Alear. Story wise F"Alear seems more canon and fits the interactions smoothly.
It seems like they really tried to make it ambiguous with this game. They have a lot of same sex pairing this time and the characters seem like they feel you in the main story no matter the gender.
what about the manga adaptation? Male Alear is used...
My prefered genders:
Robin - male/female equally
Kamui - female
Byleth - male
Alear - female
Have no idea who the other characters are...
Maybe after I play engage I'll go back and play awakening, fates and echoes.
would this mean that in a future FE game your gonna do male so u won't break the pattern?
@@DLCMan1218 lol most likely. I'll eventually will play the other gender, as I did with three houses, but It's gonna be hard with engage. I don't like the character design for male Alear.
@@magnumopus8124 *Male
@@DLCMan1218 thx 👍🏾
@@magnumopus8124 np :)
I didn't expect a Fire Emblem video, but it's really cool!
Every gender of the avatars are cannon, there is no "one over the other" argument in this series.
Golden Deer route is the canon route in FF Engage because Byleth refer Nemesis as his old enemy.
Byleth’s dialogue in that scene is this:
“The King of Liberation, revived? I doubt you’ll go peacefully. Well, neither will I. The flow of time may have brought us both here, but now I will end your journey.”
He says nothing about being old enemies.
Apparently from the FEH comics, canonically it is actually the big chested one. There’s a comic where they have a costume party and the joke is kiran doesn’t get ready for it and she wins, and it’s the purple haired one. At least that’s an interpretation if they’re supposed to be canon.
That’s the same genders I go with for Robin, Corrin, Byleth, Shez and Alear.
Male Alear is more canon because his pants look comfortable to wear and girl Alear's whole outfit looks uncomfortable to wear and leaves her completely exposed to getting a stab wound in her upper thigh. 🙃
For real though I dislike how girl Alear's cape clips through her hair. It's extra bad when she doing Engage skills
I consider male Byleth the Canon one honestly
I agree except with Byleth. I think Engage carries more weight than Three Hopes
Isn't male Alear being used for the official manga?
Since Three Hopes is an alternate timeline.
I'd say M Byleth is canon for Three Houses while F Byleth is canon to Three Hopes
But that's just my opinion.
To be fair the only way to be truly cannon is for there to be a direct follow-up to the story of the games with avatars but since that isn't the case it's whatever you want
The canon gender is whichever has the better design in my heart. Which for some reason is almost always the girl.
Wait. Don't they state in Heroes in the story that Kiran is male?
I don't believe so.
I would have remembered there being an implication for it when I played through Heroes' Story Mode a while ago.
no
Weird. I thought Book 4 established that.
@@nikoladedic6623 What. when kiran took alfonse's form when they thought he was dead?
This was already answered a long time ago. Games with both female and male protags are both canon just existing in two separate multiverses. Heroes also confirms this since you can summon both.
I said that at the start.
Male Byleth was added to heroes before as a bonus for buying three houses and Warriors Three Hopes looks for a Three Houses save file and defaults Byleth to the gender in that save
Im just going off of what engage shows. Male robin, female corrin, male byleth.
Robin being male makes a lot of sense because we only have a male Robin amiibo and since Grima is confirmed to be male and Robin has Grima's heart so the "we are one and the same" makes more sense if the gender is equal. Though female Robin is equally as cool
I always liked the idea of male Shez being the default
What stupid question, the canon character is the one you decide to play. Stop letting people telling you how to think !
One detail in Smash Ultimate is that in the classic mode artwork Robin is depicted in his male form and Corrin is depicted in her female form, but Corrin’s base alt is male so I’m not sure what version that game classes as canon.
Who is your favorite avatar?
To me, an ending to a Fire Emblem game (at least the recent ones) is as canon as the players make it.
Im Playing as Pepsiman and you cant stop me
Purely from a from a game play perspective, male robin, female corin, and female byleth have noticeable advantages which is interesting
for 3 hourse i think it's Male Byleth (i think engage actually proves it as Male Byleth says something about nemesis, making Male Byleth canon AND golden deer route canon) and for the 3 Warriors it's Female Byleth
Alear in the manga use the male version soo i think Is male but dunno
