  • Mike Tirico and Sterling Sharpe host ESPN NFL Primetime for 1998 Wild Card Saturday, where Dan Marino and the Miami Dolphins edged Doug Flutie and the Buffalo Bills 24-17, while Jake Plummer and the Arizona Cardinals pull a huge upset against Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith and the Dallas Cowboys 20-7.
The Dolphins forced five Bills turnovers, including Buffalo quarterback Doug Flutie's fumble at the Miami 5-yard line with 17 seconds left in the game. Buffalo's wide receiver Eric Moulds set an NFL postseason record with 240 receiving yards, including a 32-yard touchdown catch.
Quarterback Jake Plummer passed for 213 yards and two touchdowns as he led the Cardinals to their first playoff victory since 1947, ending the longest playoff win drought in NFL history. Their victory was especially satisfying against the Cowboys, who defeated them twice during the season (38-10 on opening day and 35-28 in week 11). Arizona running back Adrian Murrell rushed for 95 yards and caught two passes for 16 yards and a touchdown, while their defense sacked Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman four times (twice by linebacker Jamir Miller and two more by Andre Wadsworth) and intercepted three of his passes (two by cornerback Aeneas Williams).

Everyone in Dallasland thought the Cowboys were "back", that the losing year in 1997 was an aberration and that they would go far in the postseason. Turns out 1998 was the real abberation and that the dynasty had indeed run its course, especially after the Cowboys barely squeeked into the playoffs in 1999 and were easily dispatched by Minnesota.

The 1998 NFL Primetime Theme Song was based on the alternate ABC Monday Night Football BGM. This was used in the Net 25 Sports Championship Television Magazine

Draw you're guns for Wild Card Saturday with two rivals blood boiling rivalry of the Bills and Dolphins . Doug Flutie returns to the city where he was made famous with the Hail Mary in the Orange Bowl in 1984 when he was a Boston College. Now he's on the Buffalo Bill and has become Comeback player of the year but not on this day as Dan Marino lifts the demons of utter defeat by the hands of the Bills going back to Jim Kelly days Espically in the playoffs and it was the final start in the playoffs for Buffalo. In Dallas " The Boys are Not the Law" as 6th round Arizona cardinals who had to win against San Diego to punch in the wild card and go to America's Team Town with the new " Snake" of Jake Plummer takes charge and the demons are lifted in a place of house of horrors for Arizona and get their 1st postseason victory and only playoff win in old Texas Stadium. It goes to show you, in the Cowboys game the " Triplets" era would come to an end going into 1999 season. As for the Cardinals 1st victory in the playoffs since the Cardinals in Chicago days in the 1940's . Long time coming for the Cardiac Birds. Both games on ABC.

The '86 'Skins were better than the '86 Bears straight up. They were a 12-4 team that played in a better division and 3 of their 4 losses were against the 2 eventual Super Bowl teams. In case you thought it was an upset or wanted to blame it on Flutie, the 'Skins came back the very next year and beat the Bears in Chicago again, this time with McMahon playing. I can understand why people at the time maybe thought it was an upset, but with the benefit of hindsight Berman should have known better.
