  • During a 2020 municipal indigenous speech contest in Southern Taiwan, we interviewed two students from the Sakizaya tribe who agreed to share a little of their native language. Taiwan has 16 indigenous Austronesian languages that are actually taught in public schools to indigenous students, and they hold language contests to reward and motivate students.

@@riey1degreat557 I am Malaysian. Quite easy to breakdown actually! Austronesian language is still the basis for Bahasa/ bhasa.
      1. Austronesians migrated from Formosa (Taiwan) to SEA region, this is the base language before Sanskrit came.
      2. Traders, conquerors, and missionaries form ancient Indian subcontinent then brought Sanskrit/ Indo-aryan languages to SEA region, which hugely influenced Austronesian language (mainly Bahasa) for more than 1000+ years as Hinduism and Buddhism spread. This is why Bahasa has so many Sanskrit words.
      3. However, the Austronesian languages at the islands of Micronesia/ Polynesia will have very less impact from that since Hinduism/ Buddhism were mainly in SEA region.
      3. Austronesian languages in SEA region evolved again by adopting more Arabic words as Islam came to SEA region.
      4. The Austronesian languages in current Malaysia + Indonesia + Philippines will take some loan words again from 16th - 20th century due to European colonists (Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, British)
There you have it. Malaysia/ Indonesia/ Philippines' Austronesian languages more influenced by Indo-aryan languages. Micronesia/ Polynesia/ Melanesia' Austronesian languages not so much.

  • @elmarrebato

The spellings in the original Austronesian language were not standardized way back thousands of years ago because that time there was no formal education and paper was not invented. Unlike today we use a dictionary as a reference. The generation handed down the counting and parts of the body through sounds and as they spread in the different islands from Southeast Asia to the Pacific, they produced variations of pronunciations due to isolation of each tribal group. But despite of that, the similarities among them is still evident. Amazing! I am Filipino but according to my 23andme and ancestry DNA results, I got distant cousins from Samoa and Hawaii.

Wow! I was surprised that the Sakizaya Tribe language is very similar to the Cebuano language, at least in term of counting.
In Cebuano language we have the following:
    1 - usa
    2 - duha
    3 - tolo
    4 - opat
    5 - lima
    6 - unum
    7 - pitu

    10 - pulu
11 - napulu ug usa or napulog usa (the second form is a contracted form where the word 'ug (and) is contracted by dropping the vowel 'u' and the letter 'g' is joined to the first word 'napulo').
    12 - napulu ug duha
    13 - napulu ug tolo
    etc.
    20 - kaluha-an or kawha-an
    21 - kawha-an ug usa
    22 - kawha-an ug duha
    etc.
    30 - katolo-an or katol-an
    31 - katol-an ug usa
    32 - katol-an ug duha
    etc.
    40 - kaupatan or kap-atan
    50 - kalimahan or kalim-an
    60 - kaunoman
    70 - kapituhan or kapit-an
    80 - kwaluhan or kawal-an
    90 - kasiyaman
    100 - usa ka gatos
    200 - duha ka gatos
1,000 - usa ka libo or libo
    10,000 - napulu ka libo
    20,000 - kawha-an ka libo
100,000 - usa ka gatos ka libo
200,000 - duha ka gatos ka llibo
Counting in millions in Cebuano language are no longer in used in modern Cebuano conversation today. We already use 'milyon' from the English form 'million'.
