The realities of growing up indigenous in Taiwan

  • After decades of Hanization in Taiwan, most Indigenous youth are picking up Chinese as their mother tongue and losing their connection with their tribal heritage.
However, organizations like Taiwan Indigenous Television are pulling out all the stops to educate the public and empower Indigenous youth to discover their roots. Their efforts are starting to pay off.

@@adamwon3012 I understand that there have been mixing between the ethnic groups there, however I was highlighting the pride the New Zealanders have when it comes to Māori culture. It is believes that there’s no full-blooded Maori people left in New Zealand, but everyone, including those who are Caucasians and even recent immigrants, are proud of the native culture of the land. It’s their identity, and they proudly show it.

The diversity of the Austronesian population in Taiwan is more than anywhere else. Even though many of the languages are now extinct, there are still at least 16 or so different native languages that are recognized.
That said, progress is at least more possible with the DPP than under other parties. President Tsai Ing-Wen herself is actually 1/4 indigenous.
It's sad that this is the reality for so many indigenous people everywhere though. Assimilated until you're a minority (with very few full-blooded indigenous left), and your culture relegated to the sidelines/extinction.
As the late great Haunani Kay-Trask put it, "Our culture can’t just be ornamental and recreational". It will take a lot to preserve these and other native cultures and languages in the world. I wish for all the indigenous people of the world to revive and prosper.

These indigenous peoples of the mountain areas are the roughest people imaginable. They hunt deer and boar in steep jungle forests with primitive weapons. I have met them in Hualien near Tacoma Gorge. These are the original inhabitants before the Han immigrants. They have a rich culture and history. They share a language known as Austronesian that extends southward to Madagascar and most of the islands in the South Pacific. They came to Taiwan in outrigger canoes and resisted both the Chinese, Dutch and Japanese invaders. Before that, they cooked and ate shipwrecked sailors from Europe and Japan. China’s emperors considered them ungovernable barbarians. But their societies were cohesive and showed community activities in fishing, hunting, playing and sports. Early photos of them show how rugged they were, both men and women. Heavily tattooed bodies and faces. They were like Comanches on steroids without horses. Japanese soldiers hated to go into the mountains looking for them. Museums will sometimes display indigenous art which tell stories over many centuries.

There's always been some migration between what is now known as China and Taiwan. That's also where the indigenous also migrated from (SE China). Larger scale migration didn't start to occur until Dutch occupation though, when they needed laborers. Later on when Japan started to occupy indigenous territories, that's when "China" decided to actively try to govern the indigenous as well. Migration was still limited though, and apparently most rebellions came from the Chinese population. After WWII ended and the Chinese nationalists lost the civil war, a lot of them were evacuated/migrated to Taiwan.
The indigenous were assimilated (mostly through intermarriage when it came to the Chinese), but that doesn't make the disappearance of their cultures and languages any less sad.

This is why I don't like how people are pushing for "Taiwanese independence". The indigineous people won't have a voice if the ethnically Chinese people have the upper hand if they can get their country "free".

@@Alex.af.Nordheim wouldn’t it be better that they could have the upper hand? I mean, Taiwan is still technically China ROC so if they just abandon that they government, they could make a new one.
