This is one of the funniest scenes I've ever witnessed! An old film that wracks my ribs and the actor playing the tough guy is perfect! Lewis' nervous babbling is amazingly timed and I've felt like that myself on occasion :P Anyone that can make you take yourself a little less seriously is alright in my book :)

The gangster's name is Jerry Lester and he steals the scene as far as I'm concerned. He had a brother (twin I think) who was also an actor. I have the movie on DVD.

You know it always happens that way, when you have tons of critical stuff to remember, then of course the phone rings, or someone comes along and tells you about his day... That's brilliantly written and directed, and adds a lot to the effectiveness of the whole sketch, which has been >Cilling< me for something like 45 years!

I have not seen this movie since the late 1960's and I forgot just how funny this scene was. When I watch it now I still laugh so hard that my stomach hurts and I get tears in my eyes. No wonder Jerry had trouble getting through the scene without cracking up. too much. I can only imagine how hard it would be to film such a funny sequence. Classic comedy at its best!
Buddy Lester was such a very good actor. He and Jerry worked together brilliantly in this masterpiece.
