I was excited to see his favorite shot from BvS is the same as mine. I just love that down angle. And how the red cape sits in the dark. The color is perfect. Its weirdly haunting. 👍
I actually think Zack Snyder is underrated. He's not everyones cup of tea, but damn is he good at framing and visual storytelling. I think people compare him to Bruckheimer and Bay, but I think he's more artistic in his filming. Do I like all his films? No. Do I appreciate his skill? With out a doubt!
I'd argue he needs a good writer and director. He's a great director/cinematographer, but more on cinematographer side. Getting someone more skilled in directing dialogue would be perfect. @@tanaypisal4177
I always appreciated that he has a very distinct style - he's one of those directors where you only need to watch 2-3 minutes of any given movie and know it's from him without a doubt. If nothing else, he knows how to make a cool moment look extra fucking epic. What he does need is someone who reigns him in because he lacks in restraint when it comes to wanting shots look cool and epic (if you try it every 3-4 minutes you hit diminishing returns after some time) and also a good writer, since the characters are often the weak point of his movies if you ask me.

Everytime this legend talks about his movies he always tells about the story and the specs behind, that's passion and knowledge, that's why i love so much his movies, are made with his soul, the giant button to force the perspective? really? 🤯
I use to be a big fan of Snyder I still own his movies and watched Sucker Punch earlier this month. The intro for the film is my favorite Snyder intro. my favorite shot is in the first fantasy battle when Baby doll shots one of the giant samurai in the head and she just lands on the ground gracefully.
Zack Snyder is an acquired taste. I didn't like his films at all at first. But after rewatching his stuff, especially the director's cuts, I'm a big fan now.
I saw an interview where he said his favorite scene from MoS is the scene where young Clark Kent is playing with the dog and gets tangled in a red sheet that then looks like a cape and he puts his fists on his waist.

I love this series so much And I love hearing Zack talk about movies. It's honestly, a weird bunch of picks but it's totally different from the artists' perspective so it's interesting to see what he picks versus what someone from an outside perspective would pick
I’ll tell you why he has a cult like fan base , it’s actually quite simple. Zack Snyder is like a giant child with a camera crew and he comes over exactly as that. I’d buy him a whisky and talk rubbish to him. I can’t imagine that with others. That’s why he has the fan base he has. He makes what he wants, how he wants. Not everyone has to love it and that is fine.
Super weird to skip over his, arguably, most notable movie, Man of Steel. Would have liked a comment of Legend of the Guardians as well, considering it's his only animated movie.
@@mikel1998100 He's all style but no substance. Sure he makes cool shots, but a lot of the times they don't make sense story-wise. He loves making slow-motion shots but they don't serve the narrative. His story-telling style is more suited to popcorn movies-- like 300-- when you want to turn off your thinking brain for couple of hours. But he's not great with more serious stories like Watchmen or Batman vs Superman. The love scene in Watchmen is super awkward with slow motion and just hammed in.
@@impalabeeper Yeah I get that. To be honest, I did not enjoy BvS either. I think to me though the overstylization is precisely why I enjoy some of his works. If 300 was made by a different director, it would probably be yet another loosely-accurate history piece, but I think he made something unique in this regard. All in all, i can fully understand choosing substance over style, but if someone is REALLY committed to the style, nice things can happen.

Some may like or dislike Snyder as a director but he undoubtedly has his original, authentic style. 'Watchmen' is still unsurpassed in the world of superhero movies - everybody can only dream to come close to that level of superhero film making, '300' was a revolutionary approach in movie making at the time, while his work on DCEU was interesting and innovative but at the same time incomplete with some major setbacks caused by the Warner Bros.'s haste, impatience and general stupidity by the people in suits...pity 😔. It will be interesting to see what Rebel Moon has in store...
His DCEU was set back because fans did not like what he was doing. WB acted incompetently for sure but it started with the reception to his universe. Watchmen, in terms of visuals, is amazing. In terms of storytelling, it's incredibly underwhelming, especially when knowing the source material.
Yet the trolls keep watching videos about him. You wouldn't be obsessed with him or even remember who he was if his movies didn't have a deep effect on you. Glad you enjoy them though!
What frustrates me most about Zack is his refusal to look at his shortcomings as a storyteller. Which is a shame because he has the passion, and man oh man, there's no one in Hollywood that can present a shot piece better than him. If he could just get out of his own way and for once focus on character arc, motivation and story, he would be golden
Really well said. I love his passion but you’re right, I feel like he hardly acknowledges his shortcomings as a storyteller. He’s humbly admitted that he doesn’t do comedy well in an interview. I dislike how he’s also now shooting his own films when his best ‘shots’ are from films he wasn’t DP. I feel like he’s taking more control over his movies which isn’t good imo.

Snyder can be (Unfortunately) Polarizing; Favourite Films of his are The Snyder Cut (though subsequent behind the scenes real life issues with Ezra has unfortunately caused some likeability problems here), Sucker Punch, Dawn of the Dead, and Watchmen. Honorable Mention: Man of Steel.

ZS: my favorite shot in every movie is when the green screen has a unique grey cloud all over the place and the guys start fighting with nonsense choreoghraph in slow motion. 0 color. Just the way I like it
You mean the best fight choreography in modern cinema? So sick of these movies that stage their fight scenes like a dance, where every person clearly knows the next move the other one is going to make, and perfectly counters it faster than any human being ever really could. Snyder's fight scenes have genuine realism, weight and grit to them. They don't look like fake little Matrix/John Wick ballet dances. "This is not a dance!"
At that time the sparta kick seemed so badass but later I learned that Butler wore a muscle suit and no attention was given to his legs, which as a fitness guy throws me out of the scene now. That being said only a few directors have their own unique style, Wes Anderson comes to mind in this generation. Everything Snyder just screams badass. I hope his next project has a rock solid script

Snyder is one of the best new directors to come on the scene in the 2000s. It's no wonder him and Chris Nolan are friends. Two of the best new directors of this century. Snyder's films make most of what Hollywood puts out look very predictable, boring and paint-by-numbers.
They are easy to hate, because it's mostly style over substance. And while I'm not a fan of most of their movies either, I have to admit they create spectacular images. I wish they would work with good scripts more often...

I hate him. He and Michael Bay are the worst filmmakers working today. Why do studios give them money and why do people see their films?
Snyder is one of the best new directors to come on the scene in the 2000s. It's no wonder him and Chris Nolan are friends. Two of the best new directors of this century. Snyder's films make most of what Hollywood puts out look very predictable, boring and paint-by-numbers.
They are easy to hate, because it's mostly style over substance. And while I'm not a fan of most of their movies either, I have to admit they create spectacular images. I wish they would work with good scripts more often...

Zach Snyders films look great but always fall apart in the writing and story structure, if he could just have someone come in and help him, a Director perhaps.
Yup. You can definitely tell he got his start in music videos. He should be a cinematographer, not a director. He can't tell a coherent story or support any depth of characterization.
