Bulls vs Pistons Rivalry Part 2: Bulls Inching Closer, Finally Prevail (1990 & 1991 Playoffs)

  • All altercations, trash talks, hard fouls, big dunks, ejections, tehnical fouls and intense moments from the '90 and '91 playoff battles between Bulls and Pistons. A lot of new fights and hard fouls between two hated rivals, just watch it and enjoy.
    1990 EC Finals
For the 1989-90 season under new coach Phil Jackson, the Bulls sought to subvert the "Jordan Rules" by focusing on the triangle offense refined by assistant coach Tex Winter. By sharing responsibility rather than shouldering it, Jordan led Chicago to the second-best record in the East at 55-27 behind the defending champion Pistons, who finished 59-23.
The rematch was set up when Detroit swept Indiana in the opening round, then ousted New York in 5. The Bulls beat the Bucks in 4 and 76ers in 5. In an Eastern Conference Finals rematch, Chicago pushed Detroit to the limit. But the Pistons showed their dominance and won Game 7 at home. The Pistons went on to win their 2nd straight NBA title against the Blazers.
    1991 EC Finals
The Game 7 loss resulted in a stronger Bulls team the following season. With greater concentration on teamwork, they posted the best record in the East at 61-21 and Jordan regained the MVP award after years of being called a selfish player. The Pistons would drop to third in the East with a record of 50-32. Both teams meet in the Conference Finals for the third straight year, with Chicago holding home-court advantage for the first time.
The Bulls reached the Conference Finals by sweeping the Knicks and beating the 76ers in 5, while the Pistons disposed of Atlanta in 5 and beat Boston in 6. While some still doubted Chicago and maintained that Detroit's psychological edge and bench strength would loom over the series, the Bulls' 3 years of growing pains gave them the drive that not only inspired the greatness necessary to defeat the Pistons, but a decade. Proving their growth, Chicago swept Detroit. Isiah Thomas, Bill Laimbeer and Mark Aguirre, in their last show of defiance, walked off the court with 7.9 seconds left so as not to congratulate them. Only Joe Dumars and John Salley shook hands with any of the Bulls.

It’s noticeable how much more muscle Jordan, Pippen, and especially Grant put on between the 1990 and 1991 seasons. Bench guys like BJ Armstrong and Will Perdue as well; it definitely made the difference against the Pistons. Eddie Nealy’s blue collar grit and muscle was missed in 1991, but Cliff Levingston and Scott Williams came in and brought a combination of muscle, athleticism, and emotional intensity.

He put on muscle IN ‘90. From ‘89 to ‘90 he put on about 10 lbs of solid muscle. By the end of ‘90, the start of the ‘91 season, he’d put on another 7-8 lbs on top of that. He said he was about was 213.

As a DIEHARD MJ fan losing to the Pistons 3 consecutive years in a row was devastating but MJ just kept working harder and harder until finally he and the Bulls moved past them in 91! The fact the Pistons didn't give MJ the respect after Game 4 was and always will be the reason MJ hates Ishah Thomas! MJ was always respectful after each loss to them!

Anyone who thinks Lebron is better than MJ needs to look at these 2 videos. This is the kind of hostile atmosphere in which MJ became great. He has the highest point-per-game (30+) and it's even higher in the playoffs. And most of this was accomplished in a defensive era of the NBA.

People dont realize that Pippen was trash when he first came into the league and only got better when Jordan took him AND Horance Grant ( which eventually left ) under his wing and made them better. @OlJackBurton 3 года назад

Pippen was more than just solid his third year. He made his first All-Star team largely based on being the second best player on the second best team in the East. He also played all of Game 7 with a migraine and ended up hurting the team on both ends and attempted only 10 shots, making just 1, and toward the end of the game, the Pistons knew he was absolutely no threat and the Jordan was 1 on 5 the rest of the way. With a healthy Scottie, Game 7 becomes very winnable.
But yeah, he wasn't quite Scottie Pippen yet. He improved from a top 30 player in '90 to a top 10 player in '91 and then a top 3 player by '94. Just seeing how much Pippen controlled the game on both ends of the court in '91 vs '90 is night and day. In 91' Pippen was the second best player on the court during the entire Bulls postseason until the Finals. In '90 he was just barely the fourth best player in the ECF, and the Pistons had the next 4 best players (Rodman, Aguirre, Johnson and Laimbeer) before Horace Grant, but in Game 7, he wasn't even the 10th best player on the court.
Also you can't discount the maturation of other key players on the Bulls, especially Grant and Armstrong...

Yes indeed - Larry Bird walked off the court while Adrian Dantley was at the line. I blame Dick Ebersol for the narrative that the Pistons were villains. Ebersol successfully sold the Olympics in LA in 1984, while head of NBC Sports. And as President of NBC, I think he set company policy, voiced by Fratello and Marv “the biter” Albert , that the Pistons were bad for basketball. Whatever. By the way, Ebersol once paid $10,000+ at some event, to find out, who Carly Simon was singing about in “You’re so Vain” Ewwww. Hehe 🥳 🤢

That's just the camera angle (look at that dude that claims to have a 63 inch vertical). Even with that angle, Isiah's head doesn't get over the rim so the doctored camera maximum vertical was 47 inches (73 inches plus 47 = 120). There are no other camera shots with Isiah's head any near the top of the rim during dunks or blocks, but Isiah could get up there, even over 30 years old. 52:50 Phil Jackson about the benefits of fighting

    • @karlbergen6826
      @karlbergen6826 3 года назад

Allowing fighting is mixed baby. The NHL does allow it and it is most common after hits and other fouls not called by the officials. Most players have to be able to hold their own in a fight. There are rules about what is allowed and isn't in a fight. Msrty McSorley played for years much of that time protecting The Great One. After Gretzky retired McSorley became a Boston Bruin, good team but one he hit an opponent in the head with his stick and really hurt him. He was suspended for the rest of the year, charged with a serious assult and ended up never playing again.
If Brad Marchand keep up his unnecessary dirty play he's going to sleu foot somebody, hurt them real bad and end up like McSorley. Take it easy on the rough stuf,f Brad, and keep knocking in goals including some short handed ones. I love short handed goals.
There is one more thing about hockey. Two few guys take too much of the fighting burden. One young "enforcer died after hundreds of fights. I don't think he died as a result.of any fight. I think he.was very slowly beaten to death and his final fight just finally finished him off.

So much hypocrisy in the comments section. That Pistons team was one of the greatest in NBA history and probably the most underated. They did not invent physical basketball. They learned from getting beat down by the great Celtic teams of the 80's. MJ cried all the time about them but had no problem with his team playing that way. He had no issue with bringing Rodman in later either. Physical play did not end with the demise of the Pistons either, just watch the Bulls/Knicks rivalry in the 90's.

Ok... I am and have always been a die hard Pistons fan... So I will say that first. I will also say I believe without a Doubt That Michael Jordan was absolutely the best individual basketball player I ever saw... That includes Magic, Bird, and Kareem. He was simply a ruthless, devastatingly incredible force on the court, and we have not seen anyone with that level of skill and fire to win yet, and I dont think we will anytime soon; yes, LeBron has had a great career... but Jordan is simply the GOAT. All that being said... if you watch these highlights.. no doubt there was some contact; you can hear the rumblings of the announcers as they are seriously skewed towards Michael and the Bulls. Look at the play starting around the :40 mark.. Jordan tried to take the ball inside the teeth of the defense; literally he tried to go through THREE pistons... SALLEY goes STRAIGHT UP, Vinnie Johnson BACKS UP, and RODMAN was BEHIND Jordan as he started to fall off balance because he found himself TOO FAR AWAY from the basket, and fell on his side. RODMANS hands did make contact with Jordan, but not enough to cause Michael to hit the floor the way he did... AT this point in his career, he was simply going to go THROUGH any and everyone, instead of passing the ball to any of THREE OPEN TEAMMATES... Even EDWARDS BACKED AWAY from Jordan... "Three Guys Sandwich Michael Jordan" was what the announcers called. "We see the three guys in the lane, and they want to seal him from the basket".. OF COURSE THEY DO! When Jordan married his greatness to the concept of involving his teammates, he was simply unstoppable... at this point in his career, he just believed HE was enough... and he WAS... just not against this team... YET... But we all know... he learned his lessons WELL...

If people think the Pistons were dirty well it's because they learned it from the best, the Boston Celtics. Jordan once called Bird the dirtiest player in the nba which sported enforcers the likes of Rick Mahorn, Bill Laimbeer, Rodman. This was the end of the Golden Age of Basketball because they didn't call fouls the way they do today, and if someone swung on someone it was only a tech with no one getting thrown out only if you made contact which they did a lot in those days, lovely!!! It was after Jordan became almost Iconic back in the late eighties and was denied 3 straight years by the Pistons that the league changed the rules with no more hand checking or physical defense and thus you had the Bulls winning 3 straight titles + 3 more for a total of 6. Jordan,Jackson,Pippen,Grant,Paxson,Rodman,Kerr,Kuko were all great but I know if they had not changed the rules to water down the game and give more control to the refs and the odds game then Chicago would not have 6 titles hanging in the rafters more like 2 if they played old school rules from 1970's-1990.
