Hound Dog Taylor Lesson and Jam w Johnny Burgin and Jeremy Johnson

In 2021 I did a video about Brewer Phillip's guitar style. Now I am finally getting around to a chat about the star of the show, Hound Dog Taylor, complete with a Hound Dog-style jam I recorded with Jeremy Johnson. "Natural Boogie" on Alligator records is an unforgettable, chaotic ride. In this video I'll cover some of the rhythm things HDT did during tunes like "Take Five" as well as his cool bass lines and leads in "Sadie" and "See You in the Evening".
Then it's time for a treat-- a Hound Dog Taylor jam I recorded with one of my favorite guitarists, Jeremy Johnson. Blues Fans in the Twin Cities area need no introduction to Johnson. I was recently up there for a NYE show featuring RJ Mischo and Anson Funderburgh, and Jeremy and I took a moment to play some Hound Dog Taylor style music. Jeremy's in standard tuning tuned down to D, and I'm in open D.
Jeremy's rhythm is so driving, and his leads are "all business". I hope some of you guys are inspired by his playing, I have always been! You can find him on records by RJ Mischo, Big George Jackson, and Barrelhouse Chuck, and he's backed up great artists like Lazy Lester, Gary Primich, Mojo Buford and many, many others.
I often used my fingers instead of a pick when I'm playing in open D, that way you can get open strings on the turnarounds to ring more and get a nice attack on the notes.
