I read in a liner notes booklet in a Rhino Records CD compilation of Elmore James recordings, that he played his guitar with open E tuning, and not open D tuning.
that is right E tuned would be the same intervals and fingering/slide positions just one whole step higher pitch it usually goes by how high the vocal will be sung
More Elmore James! First time I heard E.J. i thought to myself, "man, Jimmy Page is stealin' from a dead man! " Zeppelin stole SO MANY Muddy Waters/ Elmore James riffs, I think only ONE ever went to court. Gotta love Jimmy though. I got my own style and shuffle, its a dotted sixteenth pattern using the left (fret) fingers as percussive trills in between 6/8ths time strums mostly in open G, got that John Lee Hooker Boogie influence, Ill post it after I get a few signature songs out, but thanks for the lessons, and to all guitar players out there, music is what makes us beautiful people! Play EVERY day!

I'm really digging this new teacher, really teaches some interesting stuff. And I've been struggling with open D and E, the six string open tunings really confuse me. I think that the five string open tunings like Open G and Open A are a lot simpler and easier to figure out. But this is a very good starting point for getting into slide guitar in Open tunings.
@Ycjedi metal ones produce more unwanted noise and are brighter in tone, I ave a steel, a brass and 2 glass slides, I'd recommend glass above all else, maybe ceramic as well, but glass has less noise, a warm sweet tone, and doesnt oxidize like brass

For some reason, i never think of a Strat sounding very good with slide...but sounds good here! Open D is such a great tuning, with so many possibilities. Check "Rosetta West - Suzie" for some good raw open D slide, or "Rosetta West - Morning Star" for a more Eastern, exotic sound in D.
Mistertbones 😯 Try "glass " there's a guy who sells real bottle necks custom which is what the old guys used "back in the day" Search the tube I think his name is Tony Furtado (may be) or search "bottlenecks" if you really want to add the authenticity to your show.😯

Did you have to alter your strat to be able to play slide? I would guess the action has to be higher. My strat the action is so low, slide doesn't fly.
If you can dedicate a guitar to it; so much the better! I use an old beat up (JHS) LP junior with a single bridge P90, put heavier strings on (11's - 12's), I also put a brass nut on... to get a glass'ier sound but with the tone control almost wound off, volume will depend on how much grind you want... I find that most Elmore stuff just likes to be on the edge of distortion depending how deep you dig! I also made the action higher... you will definately be in EJ territory then; it will also be easier to play without bottoming out the slide or fluffing notes.

Love your tone. How did you get such a fat sound on the low strings of your Strat? Definitely fatter than your open G lesson on the same axe, which is more like the tone I usually get (no matter what the tuning).

please every one check out Jeremy spencers youtube channel user/TheJeremySpencer/videos he talks in depth about slide, were very lucky to have this guy on youtube!
How come you take time to go string but string through open D but don't explain standard? Is it because you assume people learned standard tuning from some other source? If so, make the same assumption for open D, ditch tuning time, and skip straight to the good stuff.

more about soloing with the slide guitar?
Does the sound differ when its a glass slide or a metal slide?

Thank you that was fun
Hey, great video! but how do you mute strings while you play slide with a pick?
Great lesson, thank you!
I really dig his sound.
This is amazing :) Add's nice spicy slides to a classic Elmore James song :)
Billy Gibbons used it too, he covered Dust My Broom on an album.
Do you reccomend the brass slides like you are using or the glass (ceramic i guess?) ones? I dunno much about slides really.
Great lesson. Thanks...peace...Jake
Love the sound of a metal slide on an electric.

Hey :D you guys do great videos. Your using a metal slide but ive seen glass ones aswell, whats the difference?
Great lesson, can this be play exactly the same in standard tuning or even open G?

Great lesson. Do you recommend the slide on the pinkie finger or the 4th finger? I see a lot of cats using it on the 4th.
@modernway91 Its like learning a new instrument, played totally differently, but its worth it
Nice

Good Lesson, Slide guitar is pretty hard to do in the beginning.
Drop the high E string down two full steps to a C and you got open D7 for a real spicy sound.
Is that Clint Eastwood?
Good job man!!
