Three by Billy the Kid Emerson (w spec guest Joel Astley) Guitar Lesson by Johnny Burgin
Просмотров 515День назад
Billy the Kid Emerson never had a big hit of his own, but he wrote a string of hook-laden blues/rockabilly/r and b classics recorded by folks like Elvis Presley, Billy Lee Riley, Sam the Sham, Wynonie Harris and many more. His own original versions on Sun and other labels sound like a million bucks, and have very clever arrangements, forms, and delicious little twists that are smart and just FU...
Great Intros: Hard-Hearted Woman and Spider In My Stew Blues Guitar Lesson by Johnny Burgin
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.8 дней назад
I played "Hard-Hearted Woman" with Kyle Rowland at The Saloon in San Francisco last night and it struck me again what an incredible intro the song has. Big Walter's 1954 version has great arrangements to create an incredible dark mood similar to the Otis Rush Cobra recordings. (His '51 version w Calvin Newborn is more of a swing and we'll come back to Calvin Newborn in a future lesson!) Lee Coo...
Cut You A-Loose by Ricky Allen Guitar Lesson by Johnny Burgin
Просмотров 76115 дней назад
Cut You A-Loose by Ricky Allen hit #20 on the Billboard R&B hit, and was very popular in Chicago. Ricky Allen to me could have been the next Junior Parker in terms of his great material and the charisma of his voice. This tune was a go-to for Otis Rush who has many great recorded versions, it was cut by Omar Coleman and I even did a version on my first CD "Straight Out of Chicago", sung by Robe...
BB Style Slow Blues Rhythm Guitar Lesson by Johnny Burgin
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.22 дня назад
This video came from a recent private guitar lesson about what to play on a BB King-style slow blues. Great question! Come to think about it, I'd love to learn more about the various stellar rhythm players in BB's bands over the decades please enlighten me in the comments! I went through my take of something I'd do in the Key of C over a song like It's My Own Fault/How Blue Can You Get from the...

Note: this video cuts out some of the freezes in the first upload. Band guys and gals! Can you tighten up your set? In the last few years I've given my set a lot of thought. This chat goes through a set I recently did and discusses what songs I did, when I did them and most importantly, why. I mostly choose songs by groove and try to order my grooves in a satisfying way. Universal Rock Earl Hooker Lesson by Johnny Burgin

I played a really relaxed gig at The Note in Milpitas recently with Gleidson Sousa on harp (great player!), one of my favorite harp players on drums (Aki Kumar!) and guitarist Rome Yamilov on bass. There were just a few jammers and locals there at this venerable blues dive. What to start out with? The perfect answer floated into my brain Universal Rock by Earl Hooker of course! I love the relax...
I Was a Fool Elmore James Guitar Lesson By Johnny Burgin

Back to some of the great songs! This is a look at the flip side of Dust My Broom from 1955 by Elmore James. He's just BLASTING in standard tuning. This has all the aggression and relentless forward motion of the best Elmore James songs (really, all of em!). If you just get the rhythm guitar out of this it will come in handy and you'll be ready to rock the house! Have fun and let me know your f...
Endings Don't Have to Be Scary! Guitar Chat by Johnny Burgin
Просмотров 818Месяц назад
In Blues, endings are often left to chance (as they kinda should be!), but they don't have to be scary. There are ways to send and receive clear signals that a song is ending. What's more, all the greats from Muddy Waters to Lowell Fulson to Freddie King (via Jimmy Rogers) and Albert King all had their pet endings that they returned to again and again. I discuss some of these great endings, as ...

Feeling the Changes: V, IV, I to Start a Blues or End a Solo, Guitar Lesson by Johnny Burgin

The first two bars of a classic four bar intro should really get your attention and get across the main idea or attitude of the song. AND you should really feel the chord changes the V, through the IV, and a meaningful resolution to the I. In your solos, you should really FEEL where you are, especially during that V, IV, I part. All the great players have their pet ways of navigating this short...
How to Lead a Pickup Band: EQ is Not An Amp Setting! Chat by Johnny Burgin

Lots of great players play with pick up bands Mose Allison, Chuck Berry, Johnny Rawls, RJ Mischo and on and on. Of course there's a lot to be said for having a great band of regular people who know all the bells and whistles of every song you can play and who you have a guaranteed chemistry with. But look at the examples of John Primer, Eddie C Campbell, Jimmy Burns, Lazy Lester, Tail Dragger, ...
Little Sonny and Robert Kimball Chat by Johnny Burgin

The CD "Little Sonny Archives" has some SMOKIN' guitar from Robert Kimball. I'm a huge fan of his! His short bursts of fast notes, and the incredible moods he places in the songs, just knock me out. I love informal live blues recordings in little clubs and this one does not disappoint! I discuss his classic The Creeper Returns, a major happy break song sounding tune called The Melody, and the b...
It Ain't Right Little Walter Guitar Lesson by Johnny Burgin w guest Jacob Huffman
Просмотров 9042 месяца назад
It Ain't Right is an exciting song to hear and a challenging one to play, evenly, in time, and with the constant forward drive it demands. I got together with ace harpman Jacob Huffman to play this song and then I break down the Luther Tucker and Robert Lockwood parts. The only real mystery is sometimes it's really hard to hear Tucker's part during the turnaround, try as I might. Definately ope...
Jimmie Lee Robinson Chicago Jump and All My Life Lesson

JImmie Lee Robinson started out with Freddie King in the Every Hour Blues Band, then went on to work and record with Eddie Taylor, Little Walter, Eddie Boyd and others. His Bandera singles are great! He was a really creative, and powerful player, and a great singer. He quit music in the 70s and 80s and made a comeback in the late 80s/early 90s, making some fine records then as well. His band ef...
John Brim Gary Stomp and Tough Times Guitar Lesson

John Brim is best known as the original performer/writer of "Ice Cream Man" famously covered by Van Halen, but blues freaks know his whole body of work to be indispensable. Not only does Little Walter do some of his best work on many of his songs, but there's great guitar playing by Eddie Taylor, Jimmy Rogers and by John Brim himself! I love his yin-yang balance of pretty Jimmy Rogers/even Scra...
Man, this the best tutorial of Honky tonk I have seen so far. I cut my teeth on my Dad's 45 record of this when I was14. I'm now 73 , lost the use of my fret hand and only have my index and middle finger to play this which I have never mastered. You seem to love this as much as I do. Great job! Thank you!
thank you so much Amosmoses, I DO love it. good luck to you and all the best
Friggin' outstanding!
Thanks a lot Tony!
Love Billy the Kid Emerson! I got to chat with him on the phone a few times. Smart cat, needless to say. He became a man of the cloth.
Wow, that is realy cool! (getting to chat with him). thaks for watching Patrick
Yea Baby, excellent guys.
right on thanks a lot Greg!
Have you ever talked about your SG, Johnny?
it's a 2014 Anniversary Edition, I replaced the bridge pickup with a Throwback. It had an active pu from the factory, can you believe that? and E-tuners. those had to go. And horrible plastic speed knobs, those had to go. and I added the vibrola arm and now it's the way I like it. Oh I changed the chintzy black thin pickguard for a really nice antique cream finish one from Pickguardian in Columbus OH.
Love it .a guitar player who digs the fantastic Big walter. Thank you Big walter is so heavy
oh hell yeah! see ya in NOLA !
Many years ago I played on Maxwell Street with Barkin Bill and my buddies Phil Bava on harp, Paul Garrett on bass and Bob Lindell on drums. One Sunday we saw Willie driving through the people on the street in front of us. He recognized us and put his car in park then came over to our makeshift bandstand. We had taken the spot from Pat Rushing when he went to the church music. Willie wanted to sit in. He sat at the drums and we gave him the mic. He called out Wine Head Woman and in we went. Within 30 seconds of his voice about 30 people gathered around us. By the end of the song there were over 70. He followed with Detroit Blues and then immediately called Wine Head again. Again, a new crowd gathered in a crowd around us. I had never seen anything like it let alone be involved in it. When it was done he went back to his still running Cadillac and crept down the street through the crowd.
that's the mark of a hit record! wow! amazing that his car was running the whole time. thanks man, great story!
Hey Johnny, I love what you're doing and I would love to hear your insight on song writing.

BTW Johnny, Big Walter also recorded Back Home to Mama in that same session and its intro was "borrowed" by Led Zeppelin for Bring It On Home.
oh yeah that's a great one! I thought the bring it on home was a sonny boy 2 thing? sounds like Lockwood on back home to mama too! thanks man!
Wirz discography shows same personnel as Hard Hearted but who knows...
@@JohnnyBurginBluesWillie Dixon wrote it but SBWll didn't record it till 1963. Walter's Back Home was recorded in 1954. Prob Dixon wrote that too.
@@aksourdough4890 yep.
Need Kyle to show me how to play the Horton part. I think that one is in A first position.
Definitely on both statements! Kyle is smokin on the harp. Thanks a lot!
Geez Louise! You nailed it. Love the version I have with the Nighthawks and Jimmy Thackery & the Drivers together.

There is one! But I never met him before my time, I don't think he recorded
Some great tips and advice there Johnny, thank you. I recently came across a RUclips video of you playing live somewhere and before you start the song you said that you had a period in your life when you actually stopped playing for about 9 years. I really wondered how someone with your ability could have a gap that long in what you are so well known for . Perhaps sometime you could do a video for your followers about how and when you got into guitar and the blues etc. Would also be great to know where you actually grew up etc. Very best wishes to you and thanks for all the lessons and demos that you do for us all. They are great and so are you. 🌌🌅🌠👍🏻
Thanks a lot, I'll give that some thought!
Buster Benton! A great vocalist.

Thanks for all the high energy Blues discussions. Really great stuff each week! Nice shout out to Mike Welsh too! Any weeks you can skip over and slow it down too simple solo material - vamps, lumps is appreciated. Many of us way past the band age, but keep it coming for them as well.

Props to Big T. It's sad that someone else is picking his groove. Please, a capo? You're not that good, really. I was doing that stuff at 12 years old without a capo. C''mon.
Many of the greatest blues players use capos all the time

Thank you very much Sir! Very useful tutorial. I can't tell anything about the BB King band. But what I really know is that guys like Bruce Welch from "The Shadows" did sometimes more complicated rhythm guitar parts than Hank Marvin... "Hidden Gems!!!"

Agree that the song key doesn't matter too much. Most people won't notice. If you look at the Muddy Waters concert from 1978 in Germany (Rockpalast) he has his capo on the third fret for half the show (playing in G). Another great vid Johnny.
